youre obsessed with inter lately, i thought u were a juve fan?

ETA: Im not really sure why either, Inter hasnt looked great at all even without their Icardi drama issues.

Yes I am aware that was my second Inter comparison lol.

I like that Nainggolan/Vidal type player and think Ring could be very productive in a more advanced role but will eed defensive help on the other end.
We got so many non-physical guys just running around dribbling into people I can't take it anymore.

Maxi is still one of the best 10s in the league. We just need him to actually play that position. I saw a stat where Maxi is the 3rd fastest player in MLS (history? current? I can't remember) to tally 25 assists.

ETA: I think if CFG were smart, that hole he leaves behind will be a huge opportunity to bring in a big name. Hopefully, with a stadium announcement (wishful thinking) before the start of next season, on top of a new DP #10 (if Maxi is gone after this year), 2020 could be extra important.

Between reading your first and second line I said to myself "that's great but he's not really playing a 10". So if our system doesn't translate to him playing a true 10 then maybe we move him. Again not a negative on the guy. When he was playing in Italy, he was effective as a CF or SS. Wasn't great, but very effective.

I'm not even sure we even have to move him, since his contract is up at the end of the season. It's difficult -- if you have Maxi as your #10 and #9, maybe he's an effective striker, but we don't have anyone who can replicate him as a CAM like he probably did in Italy. He's still so smart on the ball; I think we'll be better with him seeing more of it as a 10.

he didn't exactly say it was a source at the croatian club, he just said club source in Croatia..... it could be even worse then you imagine. I'm picturing it went down more like a guy sitting in a bathroom stall at the local strip club just dropin' the kids off when two executives from riejka walk in intoxicated blabbing their mouths about the transfer going through. Naturally the guy is just sitting there browsing the web on his mobile and decided to hit up glenn crooks in a DM and boom, there ya have it, strip club source in croatia breaking the news! Oh and lampards there too peepin around the corner, at least that's how i imagine it went down.

You guys have active imaginations. Most likely:

Crooks: "Are you gonna sign this guy?"
NYCFC Rep: "Yeah but not everything is final: Visas, medicals, details, and I gotta plan the announcement -- maybe this time I won't have to fly to Manchester and stalk Rory Smith again. It never works. But...I will confirm NOTHING until the ink is dry. That fucking intern in Manchester is still looking for a job in the game. Last I heard, he was slinging chicken at a Nando's in Buxton."
Crooks: "Come on, man, Gimme something."
NYCFC: "If I acknowledge anything, CFG will know where it came from and if it falls through, it's my ass."
Crooks: "Come on, anything?"
NYCFC: "Look I've given you everything you need, get creative! Cite a Croatian club source! Nobody can trace that shit. Jesus, do I have to do everything for you?"
Crooks: "Got it. See you at our one-on-one, er...the press conference."
NYCFC: "One more time: if this traces back to me, you are dead to me."

Ok fine, as long as I never see Medina again.

Yeah, MLS posted it- he's the 3rd fastest current player to reach 25 assists. idk about all time, though

Funny, I don't even think he looks particularly lost.
Just because he doesn't look lost doesn't mean he should be there. You don't take a near MVP player who was kicking ass and taking names distributing the ball and creating attacking plays and just stick him as a striker where he doesn't have the ability to either create nor distribute. Maxi always gets looks in games to finish chances, but he sucks at scoring. For the positions he finds himself in he should probably have double the amount of goals. However, as I stated before, just because he has the ability to be an okay striker, that doesn't mean you play him there. You shouldn't have to take a player out of their preferable/best position just to cover your blunder at not purchasing a striker. Maxi should be getting the ball deep, distribute, move, distribute some more, and create chances with through balls. That's why we signed him, that's what he has done, that's what he should do. Period. Enough with this Maxi at striker bullshit.

Not an attack at you Jee. Just the idea/implementation of Maxi at striker.

Totally agree that it's not his best position. But I also think that without a #9 he was the best guy for the job, based on an equation that sort of looks like:

Utility_to_team(Maxi as #10 + whoever else as #9) < Utility_to_team(Maxi as #9 + whoever else as #10).

I think it's OK as a temporary arrangement, but I hope we can bring in a #9 who changes that equation. If not, though, sacrificing a player's individual utility to maximize team utility is OK to me. It's one of the tricky dynamics that makes team sports much more interesting to me than individual sports. Even if we disagree on the individual / team utility estimates, we can probably agree on the fundamental principle.

It's (possibly) a similar discussion with Alex Ring as #10 instead of #6 (or whatever number people are using nowadays to denote CDM). Albeit more straightforward because James Sands has been outstanding and doing a better job of impersonating Alex Ring than Ring is doing of impersonating Maxi ;)

If we’re going to play somebody out of position as a False9, it should be Lewis. He’s got speed to burn on the through balls, defensive responsibilities are pressing the D, can distribute from that spot, and he’s got a better shot than Maxi.

I know it sounds crazy, but maybe we should just - and hear me out on this one - sign an actual striker instead?
