Taty's callup into the Argentina U-23s after never having been called in to an Argentina squad feels like a milestone. I have been watching MLS for 7 years. If you told me in 2012 that someone could play their way into the Argentina national team picture by playing MLS I would have laughed.
It's a big deal and it'll definitely boost Taty's transfer profile. I think the case that it doesn't get him over $6m—besides that being a healthy number for a league whose selling power is still mostly hypothetical—is that youth teams are still youth teams and a first call-up is more a tryout than a trophy. The other MLS player on this Argentina U23 roster is Lucas Rodriguez, who was loaned to D.C. with a $3m buy option despite a more robust youth international record.
In Taty's favor: strikers sell, goals sell, Diego Rossi could go first for eight figures and move the market, and Castellanos will have barely turned 21 after a season where he showed a lot of growth, hard work, and plenty of potential for more.
The FIFA cap on the number of players each club can loan out could be a factor. From CFG's perspective holding Taty at NYCFC longer is a way to have an extra youth player on "loan". CFG knows they can trust Dome with his development (which has been outstanding so far). Even if he isn't worth $6M on the market, that might be the around the point at which CFG is willing to part with promising young NYCFC players (Jack Harrison -- I know that wasn't an arms length transfer but it is what they valued him at).
I dont know that it makes sense for CFG to transfer him at a $3M range unless he really wants to go -- the U-23 callup should make it less likely he feels like he needs to leave soon to maximize his value.

Taty is gonna arrive at the u23 camp and the other players are gonna laugh at his flopping and show him how to do it correctly. If he perfects that part of his game, he’s gonna be an 8-figure transfer.

how in the world is Sweat getting paid $200k... someone explain this to me.
Miller too... he's overpaid!
Heber earning his keep for sure. Taty has also been a great investment.
MLS salary release by players association .... Waste of money Sweat 200k, Ofori 400K, Medina 870K, Stevens 275K hopefully all 4 won't be on the team next year that money can be used to bring better players. Bargains Ibeagha 75K, Parks 165K, Rocha 72K give these guys a raise for next year all 3 have made good contributions.
Medina’s $875k doesn’t hit the cap. It’s a $200k hit as a YDP. Which is still too high! And a waste of a DP spot.
GMS’ $275 is probably pro-rated for 1/2 a season. So he’s $550k to compare apples to apples.
Why does this team have to give players raises before their contracts are up? Can’t we just wait till the end of their contracts to do so, and use the extra cap space while we have it? It’s not like MLS players have too many FA rights when the time comes.
Medina was great last year when he signed as a DP. so it's expected that his pay is high.

We're 17-4-5 over the last 26 games, sitting at 61 points and on the brink of clinching first place.
We just had one of the best, if not the best wins in club history.
And as soon as the PA releases new salary info we get multiple posts complaining about overpaid players.
Between the ubiquitous conspiracy bullshit and the general inability of people to enjoy success and just be happy without bitching it's getting really tiresome.

We haven't lost in 9 straight games and sit in first place but the league is conspiring against us and our bench players are overpaid. Learn to be happy. I'm so damn glad I don't live in the world so many of you seem to think exists.

a bit of an overreaction? overall, investments have paid off greatly . we're doing fantastic. but some players aren't living up to their investment while others are far exceeding them. nothing wrong with reacting with a bit of sticker shock when we see how much someone we think doesn't perform well (e.g., Miller) get paids more than someone who does. It's almost a kneejerk reaction and not a criticism of the club.
i am very much enjoying the success of the team and have said in many posts how our deep bench has helped us get where we are through all the international callups and injuries.
Hmm. These salaries are locked in for this season. I think 99% of us are happy with the results of them. But we can analyze and criticize to see how we can improve next season. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Not sure why that offends people.

Why do you do this so frequently. Make a point, in a discussion forum, and then go with "im done" routine?

Teams have players that overperform their salaries, and teams have players that underperform their salaries. This happens in every sport.
The important thing, especially in a salary capped league, is to have more overs than unders, and this club is killing it there.
The salaries that are being paid this season isn't near what it was 3 years ago. $200k doesn't mean nearly what it used to. And I know all of us here are well aware of how individual players may compare to their salaries, but I'd be curious as to what thoughts are elsewhere around the league. How do we compare? We'll never have only guys that overperform their salaries. Just need to have more of those than the underperformers. And we're doing that very well now.
Yep. And some (at least one) of those salaries are in essence delayed-compensation for when a player over-performed a truly low prior contract. Plus, bench players are the ones that prep the first team during the week, so the earning of salary isn’t always tied to game-time if not expected to be a regular starter. That said, there’s no reason to have a DP focused on practice prep.
I mean, I take your point, you have the right to be critical, whether it's warranted or tedious or whatever. But I'd have more sympathy for your argument if you hadn't spent the entire offseason waving your arms trying to persuade everyone that NYCFC was sliding into irrelevancy, and Queensboro FC was the bright new future.
That's a straw man. Adam is excited about QBFC, as are a few others like me, but he clearly is still a huge fan of NYCFC.
Throwing my weight into the camp that's scratching their heads about the counterreaction in this thread. I see a balanced discussion about the positives and negatives of the payroll right now. In a salary capped league. 100% appropriate and doesn't take anything away from enjoying this season.
