Bingo. If Mata is still with the team at the time of the expansion draft you protect him and not Sweat.
Keeping Mata is bad Cap management - he isn’t 2-300k better than Sweat.

There was some conversation about expansion draft protection lists here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NYCFC/comments/9vlxk9/fc_cincinnati_expansion_draft_who_will_nycfc/

EganSoccerWords derek_villa suggested we don't need to protect our loanees. That sort of makes sense, but I think Ofori and Taty are buy options and it's not clear to me when that would kick in. It's also up in the air what's going to happen with Herrera. Depending on how the pieces fall, it looks like there's a good chance we'll be able to protect both Mata and Sweat, but if we do that I expect we'll trade one of them.
I think there is also a good chance that we don't bring Ofori back next year and Herrera moves to Europe.

My guess is one of Mata/Sweat won't be here next year because you have to think they're signing a LB this offseason. It's basically the clear weak point on the roster. The goal would be to have either Mata or Sweat as the backup for the TAM signing that's invariably coming.

So we are thinking at least a DP striker and a TAM left back right?

Mata is an extremely expensive backup. He’s being paid starter’s money to play out of position because he’s not rated the best LB currently on the team. If a new LB is brought in, one that gets Tam money, then Mata has to be let go because his Cap hit is a drain and a waste for a guy that can’t lock down what he was sign to play.

That’s not the right way to look at it. Further analysis to come after church, but putting in my marker at now. You have to look at the team’s performance as a whole, with Mata starting somewhere else on the field and Sweat at LB compared to Mata starting LB and someone else starting somewhere else on the field. That doesn’t tell you anything about what Dome thinks of Mata and Sweat comparably at the same position.

Pretty sure Dome's only going to play one of them today, so can we all agree in advance that whoever starts in the most important game of the year, fully healthy, on a week's rest is the higher rated left back?

And then never have this conversation again.
Yes on the first part.

Pessimistic no on the second part.

Sweat makes the lineup! So now how do we unload a $400k backup?
