So they're doing that to avoid the blackout or will the blackout still apply there?

I didn't attend the town hall, but presumably, if you have a local cable subscription, you are watching it on a legit YES channel broadcast (or app stream) using a legit account, so you won't be blacked out. blacking out is only for people not watching on YES or YES app and live within the broadcast area of YES.

so, if the club is willing to give everyone a basic cable subscription as a member benefit, then great. but I'm guessing they'll just roll that into the cost of a membership and you're paying for something you may not even need.

There's no such thing as getting blacked out on a YES game. If you subscribe to YES and you're in market, you'll get every game.

You get blacked out on a local game if you have the MLS package and are in the NY area or if it's a nationally broadcast game that is also on YES.

I could see them trying to decrease the size of the local markets, as I think both NYCFC and NYRB have home markets of the entire state of NY, most of CT and half of NJ. If you live in Buffalo, you shouldn't be blacked out of national games...

They won't be giving everyone a basic cable subscription because, well, that makes no sense.

They might be able to give STHs access to the games on the YES app given the relatively low number of season ticket holders that don't have YES already.

We're kind of 30-40 years past the argument about local sports games being broadcast on cable tv, so I'm not sure why this is such a hot issue. If you don't have cable, you're missing close to all the Knicks and Rangers games each year. You want to watch them, get cable!

Every single sports team in New York is on cable TV aside from the Giants and Jets. And being on a local sports network is probably the best for visibility, since sports fans are already watching YES for Yankees and Nets games, so there is lots of cross-promotion, which you wouldn't get if you were on CBS-2 with no other sports teams.

I didn't mean my post to mean I didn't understand why games are blacked out on ESPN+. I was just trying to answer shwafta's question.

I didn't attend the townhall. canchon's post made it seem like this may have been a topic of discussion during the town hall. perhaps that's why shwafta asked the question.

If you want all the local sports, yes, get basic cable and watch em. Otherwise, do the VPN/ESPN+ thing like many of us do and enjoy more secure internet use and Bundesliga, La Liga, MLS, and much more soccer and other sports on ESPN+. Win win.

I must say, I'm an idiot. What you said was exactly right and somehow I read it exactly wrong.

I’ve definitely gotten blacked out during a YES broadcast.

On a serious note though, I thought the ESPN+ blackout was supposed to be lifted after something like 24-48 hours after the game. It seems like it’s never lifted.

It’s 2021. Fans shouldn’t have to buy a cable subscription to see NYCFC games when many consumers get all of their content through streaming sites. “Buy a VPN” is also not the answer to watch your local sports team.

I get that there are macro factors here (NYCFC will never be on any network other than YES and regional sports networks on streaming sites are a clusterfuck), but it shouldn’t be that hard to see a NYCFC game.

Other MLS markets have their games available without a cable subscription. NYCFC should figure out how to do the same, starting with their season ticket holders who are the most engaged fans they have.

Sure. But cable (or other pay) TV is the reason this league still exists and will be the leading opportunity for revenue growth going forward.
If you want $3m rosters, we can go free tv. If you want $15m rosters and growing, someone's gotta pay that.

Would someone be so kind as to summarize the townhall for the rest of us? Thank you

Because more games are at Red Bull Arena, the price of the tickets for games at Yankee Stadium went up.

The front office did a poor job communicating this and will try and do a better job in the future.

Did they dig deeper into why they charged less for RBA games? I know why but did they admit their stupid scheme here

Not really. Basically it was a rough year and a lot of things were done on the fly. Matt basically admitted we got screwed. And that’s why the trade it and roll forward for 2 games was added.

To further on this. I don’t think this was about communicating what they’ll do better.

This was more of a listening situation to understand what may be done better. So there very well may be some changes coming from this (or not), but it seemed more feedback related than it was problem solving related

You have a cable subscription that includes YES and you had a game blacked out at home? Were you outside of the NY area?

lol..
just got an email from the club to "BECOME A MEMBER!" even though I already am.

Apparently if you make a $50 deposit toward becoming a 2022 member, you get 4 FREE tickets to 2021 home games - INCLUDING THE DERBY. This is how they are screwing current STHs... sigh. we knew it was coming.

I got this email as well and fired off a reply to Goodman. I applaud the guy for standing in front of a firing squad yesterday, but fuck, don't pull this shit after getting complaints from your STH that you are neglecting them!
