2020 Concacaf Champions League

I didn’t tune in until Montreal was up 2-0. As I type this Saprissa just equalized, and it’s looked like that was coming the entire second half. Did Montreal look good the first half before/when they went up?

Still, they have 2 away goals. And to the earlier point about preseason, one of the commentators pointed out they hadn’t scored a goal in open play at all during pre-season

until they blow it in the last 10 mins.. :p

Looks like montreal is just running out of gas to finish off the game.. still a good result though. going home with 2 away goals. a draw wins it.
Yeah, they just blew it away... but I attribute it to the same preseason form as I do LAFC yesterday... except Montreal played a lot better today! They've been playing 5 at the back for a while, but have been relatively solid in it

They were playing alright. They also had two injuries very early on which didn't help

This was the major thing that killed them. First game away and having to use two subs early due to injuries is horrible to deal with. Thierry didn't have any subs to use to replace tired players, which would have been beneficial to them for the last 10 minutes. They looked dangerous against Saprissa on the counter in the first half though. Tired legs and minds did them in though. Should be a good second leg in Montreal.

Evan Bush was not in goal thats why they had a chance.

WOW...

Tigres go down in the first leg. pretty exciting.

they go back home but this tigres has been struggling even in liga mx as well. It starting to look like end of the cycle for tuca and his team is not performing anywhere close to what its supposed to.

on the other hand, Alianza also gave monterrey a lot of problems last tournament only losing the series by one goal, they playing like a team that has nothing to lose and getting results for it.

And just like that we are the only MLS team to win in this round of the CCL :)
...and score more than 2

Breathtaking to see how every MLS team completely fell apart in the final 20-30 minutes of every game, NYCFC included. It is painfully obvious just how much of a disadvantage our league is at in this tournament because of the schedule, and it's truly ridiculous that CONCACAF doesn't at least try to mitigate that. I realize it's a byproduct of our schedule, but surely there's a way to start this tournament 2 weeks later than they do.

i don't think an extra 2 weeks would do since our actual season doesn't start for another week and a half. i would love to see concacaf move CCL a month later, but maybe that's too inconvenient for the other leagues? not sure cause i'm not familiar. but yea... seattle falling apart was a lot more drastic than us falling apart. everyone was saying seattle had the easiest draw, but based on their game, i feel like san carlos was probably the weakest team in this round.

I get the issue that playing in central and south america in June isn't feasible. I completely understand their issues. And MLS would hate if this tournament were September-December. There's no perfect time to do it. Even two weeks, if we can make this our second game of the season instead of our first game, 10 days before the season starts, it would do a world of good. That first game is just a brutal way to do things.

Why did we just go through that whole skip a cycle thing where teams qualified over 2 seasons if they just kept the tournament at exactly the same time it always has been? I thought they were going to shift it around because why else would you do that. All they accomplished was to nourish extra conspiracy bullshit because nobody understood the rules including the idiots running it.

Seattle was cheated a bit. They should have been playing with a man advantage for 65 minutes after Frei was kicked in the ribs by Arboleda during a free kick play. Arboleda came nowhere near to getting the ball and the ref only issued him a yellow.
ETA: even more ridiculous because Arboleda scored both Olimpia goals. Can't believe I left that out.

it used to start at the end of the MLS season and then continue through the beginning of the next. MLS teams would be playing the tournament with 2 different rosters. This new setup (that they had to take a year off to implement) is not perfect, but a much better solution and I believe MLS has a hand in its implementation.

Not a lot of discussion here yet about our potential second round matchup, which would be against the winner of Tigres (Mexico) and Alianza (El Salvador).

Tigres were upset in the first leg, losing 2-1 in San Salvador - the only Mexican team to lose last week. Tigers seemed to have the better of play and are still favorites to advance at home, but it bears watching. Their second leg is right after ours at 8pm on Wednesday.
