2020 CCL

Wait, if the team at the top of the East is not Atlanta then they claim it. If the team at the top of the East is Atlanta, then the team that qualified is the highest team in the Supporters' Shield that otherwise hasn't qualified (regardless of conference).

Correct. And the 3 teams on top the East currently have a nice cushion on the 2nd place team in the West. So it’s pretty probable now the top 2 teams in the East now qualify.

Ahhhhh, i see. Seems like that's going to end up as whoever is 2nd in the east anyways, but a useful correction.

Right. Basically, if we finish 2nd to Atlanta and above 2nd in the West, we know we are in. If we are 2nd to Philly, we are not, but that seems much less likely. We will know more coming up this weekend when Philly and Atlanta face off.

UPDATED. Here are the 4 teams that qualify directly.
  • US Open Cup Champion - Atlanta
  • 1st Place in Western Conference - LAFC*
  • 1st Place in Eastern Conference - likely NYC, Atlanta or Philly
  • MLS Cup Champion
If (1) a single club qualifies under more than one of the criteria above or (2) a Canadian club qualifies under any of the criteria above, then the highest placed U.S. team in the Supporters Shield standings that has not otherwise qualified will get the unfilled spot.

The 4 highest ranked teams in each conference that do not qualify for Champions League will play in the Leagues Cup in 2020.

* - okay, it's not official as of today, but it might as well be.

I knew I wanted Atlanta to win to increase our chances of CCL qualification, but while watching last night, I couldn't help myself with pulling for Minnesota.
SAME omg I can't even tell you how much I was hoping Minnesota would win just because I can't fuckin' stand ATL

so we are at thing point almost guaranteed top 4.... which means we will have Leagues Cup AND CCL

I didn't even try. I don't even want CCL if we can't finish ahead of Atlanta [and Philly], or win MLS Cup.
"Yay, Atlanta has 3 trophies and we have none but thank goodness they won USOC because we were the best also ran so we get to play CCL next winter." I can't do it.

PS: If you can get excited by that, good for you. I'm not intending to mock, but I can't share the enthusiasm.

The anarchist in me just wants to see what happens when we host Liga MX’s biggest teams at St Johns.

no, the leagues cup is for the best four teams in each conference not qualified for CCL. that is why in many scenarios practically all playoff teams get international tournament play.

EDIT: playoff teams

That's fair. I mostly just want more of that allocation money.

I'm pretty sure Leagues Cup is comprised of the best teams who don't make CCL.

Did they just do it different this last year? I mean, NYC was one of the best teams last year that didn't make CCL, right?

Or did we decline to play in it?

the rules changed for 2020 and beyond, this year it was just random teams selected on both sides.

The teams participating in the first year of LC were selected by, MLS central I guess. There were no official criteria. They announced the qualification rules going forward during this year's tournament.

Right. It's kind of like Europa League, but only U.S. & Mexico - not anyone else from Concacaf.

Also, it seems like Liga MX will let its teams qualify for both - strangely.
