2020 International Duty

this is why i said a striker is needed now, may not get many minutes off the bat but comes june there will be need, also we dont know of any injuries that can happen. it doesnt hurt.

With that argument I think we're a lot thinner in the defense than anywhere else on the field..

Priority should be to add defenders.. since offensively we can change tactics to cope with injuries. But defensively, we can be very vulnerable if we're playing someone out of position due to lack of players

we got tayvon , scally will play this year, our singing sensation defender as additions for this year. leaves mata, callens, chanot, tinnerholm, ibeagha , sands, and ring as back up too if needed. maaybe add one more.

but the striker position we can get real thin. i still remember last year vs portland, mata was playing right wing. out side heber and taty we dont really have an out and out striker. sure players can play in that position but ive seen games that we see they are not as effective. yes technically medina can play there too but hes been so bad im not counting him.

I agree that we need more forwards. I just also think we need more defenders. I forgot about Tayvon but he is yet unproven in MLS play but he does have a lot of potential. Same with Scally if i'm being fair. The icelandic pop star is my biggest worry. He's not a natural left back and even thinks of himself as a midfielder more than anything. So I am nervously awaiting the day when he fills in for an injured mata (which is inevitable)...

its gonna be sink or swim ( unfair to them but sometimes circumstances call for it) the US open cup ( maybe even the CCL) can be their proving ground, if not sooner. if they not facing the top of the league teams it should be fine. something like playing vs a cincy or even nashville should be ok.

So you’re saying the Icelandic dude is a spork?

We are 2-deep at each fullback position now, so I think that's good.

We have 5 center backs on the team too (including Sands). I think this is sufficient unless we plan to play 3 center backs with some frequency. In that case, we should add one more.

With international duty - in nearly every position we have the depth to be fine, with one caveat. If players are hurt or if too many call ups come at one position. Example - if Taty is playing in the Olympics and Heber is hurt, we don't have a natural center forward.

I keep hearing that NYCFC is fine, returning the starting XI, are deep...
If Maxi goes isn’t on the pitch the upside is someone else takes penalties but the downside is that who is going to run the attack?
If Taty is on Intl. duty and Heber is hurt who steps in?
Who fills in for Tinnerholm? Dude I as overworked last season?
Are we really that confident with Medina, Tocha, GMS? While it looks like other teams are signing players and improving. NYCFC is basically the same. This is a repeat of previous posts but I keep reading things that I believe exhibit overconfidence about this team as it currently stands.

on the bright side, having a lot of returning players gives us great chemistry. but we do not have solid backups for maxi, tinnerholm and mata. and by solid, i mean someone who can step in and play the position with little to no negative impact on our style of play. i am not convinced zalelem can step in for maxi and be the play maker/pace setter for us.

having medina sucking up a DP spot while being fairly useless has been really shitty for us when looking for new talent. not having a head coach til about a few weeks ago and no CBA in place have all negatively impacted our ability to sign talent in a reasonable amount of time. sure, we can say we don't really need a lot of new players but at the very least, I think we need solid talent to backup the guys i mentioned above. ones who are proven in MLS would be great. we need more depth in practically every position. as of right now, we are competing in 3 different competitions in an already fairly congested MLS schedule with lots of travel and summer heat.

we need more quality players.

Medina is our backup for Maxi. Were it not for his albatross of a contract I imagine we'd feel a lot better about that situation. There's a parallel universe where Heber is the guy with the DP contract and Medina is the kid on the TAM deal, rarely getting near the side because of better players ahead of him, but occasionally showing flashes of something cool (the Revs game). We'd likely spend the offseason wondering how he can get more opportunities, or when he can make the step up.

I'm being optimistic of course, as he's already had plenty of chances to show his stuff, and no amount of thought experiments can change the fact that his contract holds the team back. But as things stand, most teams would be very happy to have a player of Medina's quality as a pure backup option, and we shouldn't let our anger at his contract cloud that.

Part of me also wonders if Dome's inverted wingers idea didn't allow him to show his strengths. Apparently Ronny wants his wingers to be wider, and I wonder if that is more Medina's skillset. He was much better under Patrick than under Dome, so it's quite possible he will be improved under Ronny.

Really? The conventional wisdom is you can't do that because you risk alienating both current and potential players. But it hasn't seemed to hurt them.
It's cited in this SI article by Avi Creditor (which in turn cites one on Yahoo! Sports). I think it's a new policy. It would explain why none of their players were in January camp.

Agree that they could get some blowback for this - I certainly hope they do, anyway.

so for us, that would mean Taty and Sands?

well the tweet is about US players....Haak/ sands. Taty already qualified with argentina. the actual olympics i think they are forced to but this is only qualification.
