2020 NYCFC Kit Thread

i'm pretty sure we'll always have a sky blue jersey as our "home" that we wear almost every game. and then some other color for away - that almost never gets worn.
The team went on a run the end of last year wearing the grey secondary jersey. There was some mojo happening there, and somebody (kitman?) recognized it, because you’re right, we generally don’t stray from the mothership blue.

agreed. Makes me think of English Championship numbers

A few people on here have seen it, including me as I've commented in the new swag thread. I've only seen the front (not the new name/numbers) but it's more of a dark/navy blue with a patterned lighter shade. I would describe it as somewhat throwback/retro, even though it has the three so-called "bear claw" stripes over the right shoulder. I like it

You’ve got me thinking something like this:

I’ve thought they did that every year to try to boost sales of the kit they needed to sell.

In years past, they barely wore the secondary jersey (Black & hypnokit) during the season. Typically they were 1-off matches with long stretches between. Last year, the team wore the Grey secondary multiple times in a row and coincidentally was winning those matches.

I don’t think there’s a massive cosmic force at play with this that swung chance towards NYCFC’s favorable ball bounces, but there was definitely a more concerted effort to wear the jersey than past seasons. And we do have a kitman that allowed Villa to squirt him with water before every match, so I’m fully onboard with laying the decision at his feet as a superstitious effort on his part.

MLS sets which jersey a team wears every game.

Source?

My understanding is they review and have final say to ensure there’s enough contrast between the kits (specifically for TV), but it’s the home side that chooses what they’re wearing first and the visiting side adjusts accordingly.

I don't think this is always the case - I think there are some standards that have to be followed. One year NYCFC sent out a survey (i think it was last year?) asking which 2 or 3 home games we'd want to see the away jersey. Meaning, I think, that MLS might require the away jersey at home for a certain number of games? or something?

Sure, there are probably a contractual minimum number of games a Jersey must be worn to make Adidas happy, but if there was a survey asking, then it wasn’t MLS mandating specific matches - that was chosen by the team. And we definitely wore the secondary jersey more times last season than any previous year.

could be that, or what I'm saying is maybe MLS said 'you must wear your away jersey in ___ home matches' but left the rest up to the team itself. I can't say that for certain, however.

Also, I seem to remember the hypnokit a lot in the last season of its use.

They do take into consideration what the home team wants to wear, but ultimately they make the final call to make sure everything -- including officials -- don't conflict.

This is no different than what I had said. From the linked article:

Your initial statement made it seem like you thought our kitman was deciding which jersey they were wearing based on superstition. That's not exactly accurate, and my guess is that these things are decided weeks in advance.

The kitman is the club who is the party that is given priority. You’re splitting hairs on this one.

And I do not believe the choice is made weeks in advance - I can’t cite a source, but I’ve heard it discussed by TV commentators about the selection of kits being made in the days before a match.

Not sure if this has been talked about or if anyone has seen this, but stumbled onto this asinine 2020 Euros City Shirts that are coming out in April. How fuckin sweet would it be to have some sort of variant of this as a shirt? So damn uniquely NY.
