2020 Roster Discussion

Why? It doesn't leave him here forever. Maybe two more years and he gets transferred back to Europe. Certainly better than languishing on Benfica's reserve team.

It's true that he's young and has time to develop more here in MLS and then go back to europe. I think it's good for us and probably the right decision for him in the long run. I was just surprised that he would make the decision to do so considering every article that's been written about him in the past year has talked about his european aspirations.

i hope this is true and we do get him and he is even better for us this year than last year (except for the playoff game where he was just... bad).

In fairness to the last guy, deciding on your starting LB was akin to choosing death between drowning or strangulation.
It’s one thing to drown swimming a river that turns out to be stronger than you, but it’s foolhardy to repel down a cliff with the harness tied around your neck.

How did we pay for this transfer?

Say the transfer was $2M (seems high, but who knows), and say we signed him to a 4-year contract. That means over the four years it's a $500,000 cap hit in addition to a salary of probably high 6-figures. So he's a TAM player most likely.

i really dont think it was that low. i was reading release clause was $40M. something was negotiated. benfica really doesnt do firesales like that either, it will be interesting to see what the actual amount. if its too high it makes him a DP player. medina out and parks in as DP?

i really doubt parks would be signed as a DP player. he's good, but not that good. not to mention, as you said, medina is still filling that spot with his useless, soon to be golden boot winning, self.

Transfermarket has his value around $2M, so I can't imagine it was high enough to make him a DP. Also remember that his salary last year was $150K. Even at a huge raise to $500K, that leaves a lot of room to make him a TAM player even with a high transfer fee.

his value yes, but release clauses tend to always be wayyy higher. this is done so then teams dont just easily snatch him up and actually sit down and negotiate. There is leeway to make him TAM player so well see when its announced and then do the math afterwards.

Wow, looks like I was wrong ...

Parks, 22, spent last season on loan with NYCFC, where he played in 22 games with 14 starts. The U.S. international has signed a long-term contract to return to New York for the Cityzens. The deal will be above the 2019 targeted allocation money threshold.

Notice the 'above the 2019 TAM threshold'... But we have Medina.
So this could mean two things:
1) We get rid of Medina
2) the wording '2019 TAM threshold' could be hinting that all the teams already know a TAM increase or removal is incoming.

-edit- Fantazma Fantazma curse you and your speed for writing exactly the same thing as me about 5 seconds before me!!!

Yeah I think No. 2 is far more likely than Parks being a DP. Just doesn't seem like that kind of an impact player. Good, but not that good.

Why not? US international at 20. Integral to our style as a box to box midfielder. Only 22 years old. Probably cost $4-6 million to purchase away from a huge club in Portugal.

This is what players of his pedigree cost. Medina cost $4 million and he’s not good enough for this league.

Much of the player grumbling about TAM with regards to the CBA has been american players complaining that it screws them over because it incentivizes teams to buy foreign players rather than paying the domestic players more. Most articles I've read about the new CBA advocate for more simplified rules but we all know that's not the MLS way. Could be possible that they trying to address these complaints by adding some other pot of money/rule set/roster mechanism targeted at increasing money for American players and NYCFC is using this new mechanism to cover the Parks costs.

Just want to point out that his MLS Salary was $150k, in essence, what NYCFC was compensating him/Benfica at. That very well could be in line with what Benfica was paying him, or could be less.
