2020 Roster Discussion

MLS just published the expansion draft procedures for next year. We are permitted to protect up to 12 players, which is perfect for us.

^nice one Fantazma - beat me to it.

Someone from MLS is reading these forums.

One of the things I've learned from this season and moving forward is that it isn't going to be 100% necessary to grab players in January to have a chance at the Cup/top seed. If the club can identify a problem early enough in the season -- or be forced to wait on a DP's availability in the summer -- I think I'll end up being more patient than I was earlier in this season.

Maxi back til 2021 on DP contract

I was opposed to him returning as a DP instead of TAM player before the season, but based on his production the last 2 years I have no issue with him as a DP anymore. He's a team leader and the engine of the offense. I just hope there's a clause in his contract that forbids him from taking PKs!

so he gets his cash till 2021, then he goes back to Racing to end his career. Hopefully some trophies here before he goes.

YES!

With Maxi - that basically assures that 90% of our team is locked down for next season. The only question marks are Parks and Ofori. Let's hope we can continue to keep them on loan. With essentially a full squad returning next year, we should have a really good chance at CCL and starting the season off strong.

Let's also upgrade Medina's DP spot

I thought I read Ofori is out of contract next summer?

i based off transfermarkt ( not the best source) but his contract with Stuttgart was done in December 2019, so technically a free agent.

Yes. He hasn't been in the starting XI so i didn't really consider him as part of the 90% returning :) I like the guy, but I don't think his confidence or work ethic is enough to reach his potential. He needs to take a page out of taty's book.

He is on 1 year loan from Stuttgart. So, if he returns he'll need to have a new loan worked out. Not sure if there was an option to sign for the 2019 loan.

Stuttgart bought Ofori for $1.7 million in January 2017 when they were in the 2 Bundesliga. Best assumption is that he signed a 3.5 year contract that runs out next summer, but it may have been longer.

Ofori played regularly in the 2 Bundesliga, but when Stuttgart was promoted, Ofori didn't play much in the Bundesliga itself. So, a loan made sense, and it was repeated after Stuttgart finished 7th. This past season, however, Stuttgart was relegated back to the 2 Bundesliga, and that's where they are today. I suppose it is possible they will want Ofori to play for them once his loan is over.

Whether they want to sell will depend, I think, on when his contract really ends. If it ends next summer, they might want to let him play a bit and sign an extension, or they may want to flip him this winter when they can still get something for him. If the contract ends in 2021, Stuttgart will feel less rushed to do something.

Ofori is still only 24.

International veterans like playing here. We see that with Ring, Chanot and now Maxi. Their families love calling this city their home. That should help us even more in the future. I think the only thing really stopping us from bigger names is where we play.
