2020 Roster Discussion

Silva and KDB play entirely different games. Silva and Maxi are like for like players. KDB relies on power and pace. He puts in a defensive shift and can put in a tackle.

Both Maxi and Silva are “soft” players.

Not to mention that City have a $130 million #6, $110 million worth of CBs on the bench currently and a goalkeeper who is probably the 3rd best in the world.
I wouldn’t say Maxi is a soft player - he is quite effective on D and dispossessing the opponent. By virtue of them being the “same player,” wouldn’t that be a plus since we’ve seen so many times that when a team can shut Maxi down our engine room sputters - with Silva, there’d be a second bus driver to direct the attack.

I don't think Maxi and Silva are all that similar. I agree that they're both fairly soft. I feel like Maxi spends much more time carrying the ball than Silva does. Silva, particularly more recently, has become incredible at being the guy who gets into the position to receive the ball from someone who is carrying the ball (e.g. a Maxi) and getting it to a someone who is in the right position to score.

If we could somehow work the roster regulations so that we can get Maxi, Silva and Parks on the same team, we could construct an insane 4-man midfield (diamond or 2-2 like we have been seeing recently). But even then, Mitri / Ring are the odd men out. I'm also not convinced that Maxi wouldn't be good in a 2-striker system off someone like Héber / Taty. I'm deep in fantasy land now though.

Between the points you all have brought up regarding roster restrictions and the difficulty of constructing an XI which gets our best players on the field, I've arrived at a better understanding of why Silva and Maxi might be considered either / or. Much appreciated.

BTW, is this Silva / Maxi either / or conjecture or insider knowledge? I never know with you, K Kjbert, and part of me suspects that you enjoy that.

I cannot imagine the amount of miscommunication between you/your wife or you/your boss considering the amount of unreferenced cryptic answers you leave on the forums, many times as answers the following day(s).

I was asked if this was an either or. I said or.

Maxi tackles a lot, but quite often ends up on the losing side because 120 lbs. He's not afraid to throw his body into the action and he's probably one of the least "soft" 120 pounders you'll see, but yeah he's no KdB. The one who looks and plays like KdB in MLS, at a much lower level of course, is Pomykal.

Haven’t seen a lot of Pimykal. Excited to see him play in a couple of weeks.

BTW on his Spanish broadcast today Abramowitz said that sources had said NYCFC had hesitated for a long while to give Maxi a firm renewal offer, and that Maxi had been in contact with Racing, but after that went nowhere NYCFC gave him an offer, quite low apparently. Like non-DP. And supposedly Maxi's agent was coming to NYC to straighten the situation out.

that's interesting if true, considering how important he's been to the squad this year. yea he's getting up there in age, but he's been very effective. leading the league in assists? i mean come on. he's the best DP we have right now. does the club really think we can land someone better for the money? even if we sign a big name, it's a gamble whether they'll work out. MLS is a different kind of beast. many players who come here just aren't prepared and even great players flounder and don't produce - whether they're in their prime or not. Maxi has shown he can play in MLS and do it well. Club should value him more and not try to lowball him just cause he had tried to go back to racing. i get it is a business in the end.. but it's kinda messed up.

Exactly. Not only does he deliver the goods (assists), but he does all the little things we want as well, and he does it while getting knocked around by players up to twice his size. He is talented, persistent and tough. He deserves two more years with good pay. If the Club can structure things so that he stays below DP, great, but they need to treat him with respect and keep him around.

Now, to be fair, they might well be doing all that. Roberto Abramowitz is a good guy with good contacts, but when it comes to contract negotiations, even well placed people can be way off.

See, you can reference a post when you want to.

right now take this with grain of salt. Argentina news site interviewing taty saying he is being scouted by euro teams, but that his agent and CFG are the ones that look at the options.

Based on his performances, I think he can make the jump to Europe. Not a big 5 league, but certainly a sign and loan. Though, as he's only 20, I think another year in NYC under Dome would be better for his career.

was gonna say the same thing. MLS quality is higher than a lower level european league.. unless he's going to a D2 team in one of the big 5. BUt even then, getting actual playing time is more important than just being in europe. another year under Dome. another year to surge in MLS and become one of the top strikers along with Heber, and then make the jump to europe.

I'd put him around the same trajectory as Jack Harrison. Similar production, different players, but that $5-8mil sweet spot sounds right for next year, assuming he keeps playing well. We'll really need him and heber from the start in 2020.
