2020 Roster Discussion

You know who would make a very very good MLS player? Julian Green.

he can play left back

I'm not too sure this paints the whole picture well.

His first game action of the season was as a LCB at Minnesota and that was disastrous. And you are right, when he was forced to play as a RB at Dallas he didn't play particularly well there. Though, the whole team really didn't either, and he was playing on a side that he's a lot less comfortable with.

But he did see action several times throughout the season at LB and I thought he represented himself pretty well at that spot. Nothing to write home about, but solid performances.

I only recall him playing a decent game at LB in the USOC. Otherwise, every time he played in the defense, he was often out of position and/or outpaced. Maybe his few other performances were so average they don't stand out in my memory among the disastrous ones, but I think we can agree he's much, much better in the midfield. although he doesn't have standout vision or dribbling skills, he works hard to press and make himself available as a passing option.

He's more ready to contribute to the first team right away than any of the other HGPs at time of signing (including Sands) due to his physical attributes. Very happy for him and cool to see a kid from the Bronx on the team.
He’s also older when signed than the other HGP. Apples to oranges.

So at first I was thinking if the club could possibly use Ibeagha as trade bait somewhere. I know he overperforms his contract and he's a very useful player, but with three guys ahead of him at CB, and a young academy kid behind him, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to let him go elsewhere where he might see more minutes, and perhaps we could get a decent TAM/GAM haul out of it.

BUT, then I remembered about international duty. I think the 4 we would have should be able to withstand injuries, and even Ring as a "break glass in case of emergency" CB. But all the CBs on our roster right now, except for Ibby are likely to be called up to some form of national team. In that instance having a cheap contract like Ibeagha there, and one that has limitations, but is generally quite solid, is a great asset to have.

Thanks for listening to me argue with myself.

Here I was ready to sign up for your TED talk.

Remember that we no longer have Sweat as an emergency center back.

Each of the last two years (at least), we've had one or more games where we had to use our 5th center back. We need five at least.

I'm wondering if signings this year might be later than usual due to the CBA, not just for us but around the league. How will they handle it if you sign someone to a TAM deal and then they get rid of TAM (IMO unlikely but I think it's a union talking point). Or what if a club anticipates their allowed budget next year will be the 2019 budget ("X") + (X*20%) but after negotiations it's only 10% and you're over budget. Or it goes up 30% and you've already signed a full roster leaving money on the table?

I'm sure that will be handled with the CBA - like 'if TAM is removed, compensation' or something
