2020 Roster Discussion

This club has zero ambition.
Haven't read much into the Modric pursuit, but from everything I'm reading re: Bale, there isn't any chance he wants to come to MLS and LAG/Miami are just being used as bargaining chips. MLS might as well publish a report saying that Red Bulls are seeking to sign Messi.

I have to agree with Soup on this. Those reports are very speculative. Carlos Vela, the runaway best player in MLS right now, is several notches below any of those in terms of transfer and salary costs, and a safer bet because of age. Both Modric and Bale would smash MLS transfer and salary records and could very well flop a la Pirlo. I couldn't say NYCFC shows lack of ambition in not pursuing those kinds of players since we got burned every time we did except for Villa, and OTOH we've done great with smaller names from big leagues (i.e. Maxi) and nobodies from arcane leagues (Heber) so why change now that we're finally making successful transfers? To show ambition AND good sense would be to offer $10-15M for young guys from Argentina, Uruguay, etc. or established in their prime LigaMX guys for similar amounts. But not aging superstars from Real Madrid.

Sorry. But Bale at LWB or go home. This is the way.

Prediction. We're not getting rid of Medina this offseason. The team won't eat his contract. But, if he doesn't substantially improve & draw the eye of Deila, they sell him for pennies in midseason and sign someone moderately big or better in the summer transfer window.

im starting to think that when he allegedly told a fan he was going back to paraguay, medina meant he was going back for the training camp for the u23's. not going back to play in a club over there.

Bale to MLS will never happen. He's still too young and not desperate enough to take that much of a paycut. Plus, why would anyone want to take on glass bale? I wouldn't touch him if I were a manager.

Modric to MLS is more plausible due to his age and mileage on his legs. I could see him going to DC and that'd make DC one of the best teams in the league on paper.

I think it's even more likely chicharito goes to lag. That will blow up this league for the north America fan due to all the Mexican fans.

There's a difference between under the radar and being a big deal. He's obviously not getting paid much so it's not a "big" signing, but I think this could end up being an important signing. You kind of have to put him in the spot Ofori was in. He might not be as good as Ofori, but he's certainly better than Rocha and Torres.

So our 6/8 midfield depth is now Ring, Parks, Sands, Zelalem, Rocha, Torres. Pretty good.

Not clear whether he is better than Rocha and Torres, but he certainly has a higher ceiling.

Includes three new trialists:

- Cody Mizell, a 28 year old GK who once had a cup of coffee with the Rapids

- DJ Taylor, a 22 year old RB at North Carolina FC who spent a bit of time with a couple of Spanish academies

- Dre Fortune, a 23 year old attacking midfielder and former Red Bulls trialist who recently got his first cap for Trinidad

the GK was new mexico starting keeper last year. wonder why he took a shot, unless they sending barraza somewhere this year on loan ( like they tend to do with GK's)
