2020 Roster Discussion

Hold up, are you saying we should keep Medina in 2021?

But in all honestly, the opportunity cost of his salary is interesting.
- What other player could we have at his salary?
- What is the potential gain we can get from him from a sale?

Medina isn't the most expensive player, but for his salary there could be much more effective players available in the European leagues outside the Top4. Not all can be winners, and for every Ring, Callens and Tinnerholm there will be a Berget, Hountondji and Amagat, but somehow young South American prospects feel even more like a lottery.

The strange thing is that very few signings have turned out to really strengthen the team during the last two or three years. Maxi (for a not an overly high salary for a DP), Callens, Johnson and Ring were signed already four years ago, and even Tinnerholm is already on his third year. Herrera came and went, but he was a loanee.
Since then only few players have had a real and/or lasting impact. Mitrita didn't turn out like expected for a DP, Heber has so far been a one-season-wonder, jury is still out on Castellanos, ITS has been in and out with injuries. Medina took a DP spot without at any point giving enough back. It has taken GMS more than a year to start showing some signs of a useful player, and he's still nothing special, to be honest.
What I find baffling is that every year there seems to come new players that have little else to offer than to make up the numbers. It's as if the club's scouting just isn't good enough.

Is Sands out for the season or do we still think he might be back even for Game 1 of the Playoffs? The last news I saw said he might be back, but I'm also reading stray remarks here and there by people who should know that say he's out until 2021.
I thought there was a shot at him returning if we were able to make a deep playoff run. I don't remember the exact quote on it and probably won't have time to try to track it down until later this afternoon, but that's what I'm recalling.

I've long held that Medina is the kind of player that we'd be raving about in terms of potential, were it not for his albatross of a DP status.

Which of course is no small deal! But I'm looking forward to seeing what the kid can do in succeeding on his own terms (which clearly is not 'MLS DP megastar')

I haven't been able to watch games much since the pandemic began, just following results. Has Medina primarily been playing centrally or on the wing?

when maxi was out, he played in the middle as the 10 but with maxi on the field, he has been taking up a wing position

Why is Medina not a DP next year?

I agree that he’s in his best run of form since joining.

it was apparently structured into his contract that he would have DP status for 3 years

I’m nitpicking. But I doubt it was structured INTO his contract. Rather, his contract was structured so that by next year it wouldn’t be prudent to keep his YDP status (that costs $200k vs the cap) and instead they will probably be buying down his remaining amortized portion of his transfer fee + salary with GAM to stay under cap. Or they made it a 3 year contract with a club option after. Therefore, making it even easier to buy down his salary as the transfer fee was already fully amortized over the first 3 years. Love you bro.

Tati named MLS player if the month, but Medina named NYCFC player of the month!
So Tati was best player in the league, but Medina was the best player on NYCFC!

Taty was named MLS Player of the Month for October/November.

Medina was named NYCFC Player of the Month for October.

Keep in mind the Red Bulls match (Taty's hat trick) took place in November.

No, Heber's tweet is likely just that the doctor's have indicated that there's no more damage to his knee and he's able to return to sports...after rehabilitation. Maybe he's back by May/June.

yes i took his tweet to mean the doc thinks the surgery went well and there aren't any problems from it or remaining after it. now he can begin the long road of rehab and hopefully return early/mid next season and have another 2019 year!

This team needs to bring in MLS veterans rather than Manchester City scouting prospects. There is something to be said for players who have MLS experience. It's a valuable asset in this league.

What do you mean mls vets? I mean today players like Nani gallese Dike are not “vets”. Players like mata callens probably have more experience in MLS than them they are of vets.

I think we need an MLS vet COACH.

that I can agree with. When we had our search I wanted gonzo Pineda, he played in league and is assistant in Seattle a winning organization. I think DC United had him in their list.

PV and dome did figure the league out eventually (Dome more i think) but didn’t go far in playoffs.
