In addition to all the GAM, TAM -- we must have a ton of salary cap space right now.

This one hurts just as much as Ring does. Two players who have been immense in our team for a really long time, gone just like that. I'm really hoping we move on to better grounds, but Mata, aside from his bonehead mistakes every now and then, was one of my favorite players on the team. An all around great guy. Wishing him the best of luck in Cinci... just not against us.

I really like him too despite the playoff problems he contributed to.

He's the only player I've "run into" outside of any organized events. A couple of years ago we had a game at RBA where we got spanked 4-0 and Mata wasn't quite recovered from an injury to play in it. This was the game where RBA put out free t-shirts all over the stadium, including the NYCFC away section and with that, and the score of the game, many of our fans started chucking them onto the field.

I was incredibly deflated by the score of the game, but ultimately moreso on the behavior of the fans in the section I was in, that I left early (I think this is the only time I've done so). Got down to one of the exits to RBA right around when the final whistle blew and Matarrita and some of his friends/family came walking out. I yelled out to him and without any hesitation he came over to me to chat very briefly. He didn't have to do that at all and I really appreciated it.

Yeah, I’m not a Mata fan based on his play on the field but he seems to be a good guy. I remember him coming out to apologize to fans after the game when his brain fart knocked NYCFC out against Toronto (and possibly cost NYCFC a serious cup run at YS).

I feel like with Mata there was always this waiting for him to “achieve” his potential - like a dazzling run finished with drilling it 10 ft over the bar and grimacing. Add that to his very high profile gaffes in big games and I have no problem with him moving on. He’s not a LB as he’s not a good enough defender and is not a winger as he doesn’t have enough end product offensively.

He’s a wingback on a team that never employed wingbacks. Take the GAM and move on.

I really liked 2016 version of Mata. 2019-2020 version? Not so much. Nice player, but a championship team needs to do better. Agree that he seems like a great guy, and I really hope he's able to get his career back on track. Because I am sure this is not what he had in mind for a next step when he moved to NYCFC five years ago.

agree wholeheartedly. He never took that next step for all the talent he had.

Grass isn’t always greener with new players. Who is next because I don’t think we’re done here. I think many of you massively underestimate Matarrita and he will be sorely missed. Let’s see where they go next.

You just took one guaranteed starter and traded him for $250,000 of GAM and salary cap space. The GAM is split over two years. Don’t like that.

Hate this move. We had a chance to move him overseas a few years ago and then he got hurt. Not sure if there is a conversion table between GAM and a sale price. But I’m shocked he went for less than Ring.

250K GAM in both 2021 and 2022, with potentially $100K more.

Yeah, he's a top attacking LB in the league, decent defensively. Similar to Ring, he's a top 5 player in his position. He would be in the last year of his contract and would likely want some big salary increase like Ring was looking for. So that's probably why we moved him now rather than getting nothing potentially in 2021.

Also shocked he went less for Ring, but Austin has more GAM available to them then FC Cincinnati.

Can't find the older budget rules, but now a club retains 95% of a transfer fee (for non Homegrown or DP players) and may assign up to $1M as GAM. Maybe it was just easier to deal with MLS trades then foreign transfers but how could NYCFC not get $1,052,631.58 in a transfer fee outside of MLS for Mata. (That's the minimum sale price to equate to $1M in GAM based on the 95% transfer fee).

Exactly. You’re telling me a Mexican club wouldn’t pay $1 million for him?

And I am curious what his raise looks like when those details come out

who in europe is even buying him? he had a good 2020 but not amazing year. there was no hype. i really dont think euro teams are going to be paying $1M for him, probably use it on a younger player locally.

lol no, no liga mx teams will pay that. they will pay for DP level players but not mata.

I think my biggest fear in all of this GAM we’ve acquired isn’t the players lost, but that Ronny probably has a say in these new signings that will determine the success of the club over the next few years....
Let's see what comes out of it. I have faith that they can pull some good players.

My biggest concern is whether CFG is actually going to spend money. If fans aren't going to be able to attend in person, what's the incentive to spend big? MLS playoffs are a crapshoot so maybe they bring in a few guys, hope they sneak into the playoffs, and if a few things go right, advance a round or two. Maybe the Ring and Mata trades are just about shedding salary more than anything else.

I know goals and assists are not the end/all, but the guy has averaged an assist every 900 minutes and a goal every 1850 minutes in the league. And those assist numbers are in a league that gives hockey assists.

Mata was always more promise than production. And this from a guy who spent some very valuable Cityzen points for a signed Mata locker mat.

Remember Cityzen points?

Anton Tinnerholm has played 300 less minutes than Ronald Matarrita, which is somewhat crazy to believe consider that Mata has been with the club for 2 more years (yeah, injuries). And Anton has 9 goals / 18 assists, which is 814 / 407 minutes.

I know trusting words is never a good thing, but the way David Lee puts it, it sure sounds like there is a plan here. Hopefully I'm right in trusting that.
