2021 Roster Discussion

This guy (translated Twitter bio: Sports Journalist graduated from IPEP. Communication student at FIC) appears to think he'll be coming to MLS in June

yes, it does not seem terrible considering we dont even know when the MLS season will start ( if it starts at all), so when he comes here he may not have missed many games.

I'm underwhelmed. He played 29 games in 2017-18, just 13 games in 18-19 and 19 in 19-20. His highest G+A/90 is 0.52 in the 18-19 season of 1033 minutes. When he played 29 games it was 0.42. His career total comes to 0.29. Whoscored describes him as attacking mid, center, left. His defensive work rate appears to be pretty solid.

The most recent write-up I can find about him is from five years ago, but does at least feature a cameo appearance from a familiar face http://outsideoftheboot.com/2015/03/19/franco-cervi/

Sounds like he’s a short guy with a few tricks up his sleeve who works his ass off off-the-ball. Very left-footed, and a few questions about the end product. Fun fact: it sounds like he’s filled in as an emergency left back a couple of times.

Do y’all know something I don’t? People are saying a Dubai vacation but maybe he signs for a club over there that helps us out.

I did see Medina's IG story including both of them on a business class seats last night (that photo was after this photo). That is a lot of luggage though for a trip, then again I always just take carry on luggage.

based on ig stories it sounds like just a vacation. probably made easier/ cheaper by CFG. the local league is in full swing though and if he was signed i feel like he would of been announced already by a team over there.

Cervi looks legit. Much more technical player than Mitri on the left. looks like he can beat guys off the dribble and tends to find himself in the right place at the right time a lot.

If the transfer fee is correct and it's $9.6 million, it would be the biggest transfer fee in club history and the 7th-higest transfer fee in MLS history per transfermarket.

I know nothing about this player, but for that money we're expecting him to be a star.

I'll just leave this here. Seems like a "Ronny guy."

Sounds like Cervi is like mitri with much better work rate but much less final product.. why can't we have both in one player??

The Portugese league, I believe, is better than MLS. So would a player who struggled to finish against better defenses be better in a league where the defenses are far behind the attacks? I don't know the answer to this question, but what I would also say is that there is no perfect player who comes to MLS. Guys are in this league because they aren't perfect players. Kevin De Bruyne isn't walking through those doors any time soon.

Also can I just say that it's pretty exciting to see this team splash a massive amount of cash once again. Mitrita didn't work, but I think we all can understand what they saw in him and why they thought he was an answer. It didn't work, but I'm glad that failure hasn't stopped them from making massive moves. Spending nearly $10M on a player is a gigantic investment. It may work, it may not work. But the complaining from far too many about their lack of desire seems severely misplaced if this rumor comes to fruition.

The three somewhat recent guys who in my mind came to MLS and then exploded significantly beyond what they did previously came from Serie A, Serie A, and La Liga (Giovinco, Martinez and Vela). Maybe Pozuelo (Belgium) belongs in that class but I would put him at least a half notch below in terms of his "where did that come from" factor. I think Ruidiaz actually scored more in his last 2 Liga MX seasons than he has in MLS. Which is not a knock -- he's been great -- but doesn't fit into the mold of what we're trying to discern. Generally, while plenty of players from Latin American leagues have done great in MLS, I don't think they tend to come here and wildly over-perform what they did previously. And not for nothing, but Maxi's MLS stats are beyond anything he did consistently in, again, Serie A. Heber's production is pretty much in line with what he was doing in Croatia.

The Portuguese league is maybe on par with Belgium. Honestly, who the hell knows. But it's no La Liga or Serie A, while pretty certainly better than Romania. I'd call Cervi less of a long shot than Mitrita, but not the best possible odds out there.

Do you think NYCFC has to overpay for players to come here?

We all know the while thing any Heber being the 7th choice at striker (or whatever # that was exactly). There's a lot of reasons not to come to NYC, namely the lack of stadium that has us playing at Citi Field and RBA, and sometimes CT, St John's, etc. There's also the fact that you're playing the majority of your matches on a baseball field covered in crappy sod.

I don't don't Franco Cervi at all, but from what people are saying, he's not a $10m transfer fee DP. But maybe that's the actual cost of bringing guys here. We're not flashy like LA, Miami, or Atlanta. We're a mid table spending club who doesn't have a home of our own.
