You could say we tried the young South American approach with Medina a la Miguel Almiron and failed at that too.

So what's the next DP angle?
Asia? Africa?

Remind me again why I should be upset that some random Romanian kid who none of us wanted to sign is actually signing for another team instead?
I dont think its so much who it is but the fact that the team needs to fill spots in certain positions and it doesnt seem like the FO is really concerned with finding players. We are a couple weeks from preseason and all we got was one signing.

Looks like we may have lost Matan to Columbus. Seriously can't make this up. :tearsofjoy:
If the transfer fee is $1.5M, then it would have been an underwhelming way to utilize one of these U-23 signings that you can sign for unlimited transfer fees. So this might not be a bad thing. Hopefully they're aiming higher than this guy.

Also, let me say this: When the signing was being reported, people on here were underwhelmed by it. Now that it's apparently not true, the response I see on Twitter is, "LOL what's going on with this franchise."

You can't be pissed when they appear to sign a player, then pissed when that signing falls through. It doesn't work that way.

From some things I’ve been seeing online - apparently the rumor was misreported from the start and NYCFC wasn’t even in play for this Romanian kid at all. It was always Columbus lol.
i read this too but like how do you confuse columbus - mls cup champion with nycfc- embarassing first round exit team? We dont even have the same colors lol

Seems to have been more of a reaction that we can’t even get a mediocre shoot low type guy that we allegedly wanted.

Or the more likely explanation, which is that international soccer media does a terrible job and just got it wrong. No one should take anything seriously until an American-based reporter has something. Not being jingoistic, just that the American reporters have a much better track record than people none of us have ever heard of. I trust Sam Stejkal and Paul Tenorio a hell of a lot more than rando Romanian reporter.

i disagree here, our only signing was practically confirmed by a danish source. All the Argentina signings for other mls teams got confirmed by sources in Argentina. I think even cincy Brazilian kid got confirmed by local Brazilian outlets.

Of course some of it can be BS but when it comes to international signings there can be something to it, it may not fully come true but there was talks behind the scenes.

That being said I do trust Sam and Paul have all intel when it comes to general league news and issues such as new CBA the new u23 DP or a new CCL cup or trades between MLS teams.

They do sometimes get it right, but I feel like their hit rate is much lower than reporters here. Personally, I don't trust anything until I read it from a reporter I trust.

Taty going. Taty staying. Taty going.
it keeps flip flopping but im assuming Palmeiras didnt get Borre, since taty was the backup target. Apparently Monterrey wants taty too so probably Palmeiras is going ahead to try and get him now not risk losing out on the loan.

... Still around 60 days to the start of the regular season, so there's plenty of time to see what else David Lee has up his sleeve.
Just under eight weeks at this point. I'm more bored than worried or frustrated. That got me to wondering if we're particularly "behind" the other clubs with signings.

MLSsoccer.com has a transaction tracker and a filter for new signings. Turns out 88 players have been signed since MLS Cup. Austin leads with 10 players, understandably, with Charlotte (!) picking up a player. That means 77 players have been newly signed by the 26 teams that played in 2020, or an average of about three per team.

Fifteen teams have added three or more players, led by LA Galaxy and Atlanta with six. In other words, 11 teams have signed two or fewer new players so far. Not what I expected. Chicago, LAFC and Portland are the other clubs that have added one player like NYCFC. Toronto, Colorado and Philadelphia haven't signed anyone. Toronto sort of makes sense with their coaching change. But Philadelphia, especially with the departure of Aaronson and McKenzie?! Glad I don't know any Union fans.

ETA: Another 23 players have been added through trades, excluding one player-for-player deal. Austin brought in six players, including Ring obviously. Houston, Minnesota, and LAFC are the other teams that have acquired multiple players via trade. That still leaves eight teams that have added no more than two players overall, nearly a third of the league.

Useful context and information. Thank you.

I think one factor that is not reflected here is that we have released, loaned, traded or otherwise transferred away multiple regular contributors and have 2 DP slots open, and have at best, replaced one of them (Matarrita). It doesn't mean we're not still being unreasonably impatient, but it's another level of context.

How does that compare to those other low-transfer teams? What's the aggregate I/O? I wonder if we can see that too, as well as # of dp slots open. Too lazy to do the work myself but MumonA MumonA if you find yourself bored and with some more time, wonder if you could compile this?
