2021 Roster Discussion

we just gave him a raise and Heber should be back eventually. You don’t pay Taty and bring someone in in the same window

That's the problem. This roster, when fully healthy, can continue our streak of being the team with the most points during the MLS regular season over a trailing X year period.

But we don't have that 1 or 2 players that can change a game singlehandedly and win a playoff game.

we agree. We have a good team with competition at most positions. But the ceiling in this team isn’t MLS Cup with Taty and Heber leading the line.

More quirks in the NYCFC roster list on the MLS website:
  • Though Medina has the phrase "Young Designated Player" next to his name in the Player Category column, he is not included under the "Designated Player" heading (scroll way down). I checked some other teams, and it appears that no YDPs are listed under the Designated Player heading. But the even odder thing is that some teams, including Cincinnati and Miami have a Young Designated Player, plus 3 other Designated Players. I knew Miami had isses but understood that they had to fix them, and I never heard that Cincinnati had excess DP issues.

  • NYCFC has 5 players in the Category "Supplemental Slots 25-28." Think about it.
  • NYCFC has just 2 players in the 21-24 Slot category.
  • NYCFC has 2 players in Slots 29-30.
  • NYCFC has 19 players listed as Senior Roster, Slots 1-20. One of them is Mitrita.
If you assume that one of the extra 25-28 players counts against 21-24, then there is one 21-24 slot open. Assuming Mitrita doesn't count, there are 2 Senior roster spots open.

Budget aside, these are real limits on our summer signing options. Someone would have to be cut or loaned out to add more than that.

where does Sands fall?

wild JPT ever see the pitch? And we still lack offensive options.

Castellanos has a weird reputation around here. It's like everyone immediately wrote him off as un-aspirational. Is he a future Champions League player that we'll sell on for a high fee? Probably not. But he's a very strong player with time to continue his development, and potentially a mainstay on this roster for a while. I would not be surprised in the slightest if he consistently scores 15 goals per year in his prime. He's shown durability and heart in his time here so far, and he can handle the center forward spot, but is flexible to play on the wing or in a two-striker system. There's a lot to like.

Great move by the club.

this is now a make or break season for Taty with our team. In this league, you get nowhere with just a good Striker. He doesn’t have to be Villa, but he does have to be Josef or Ruidiaz or Jozy. I am unconvinced he has the finishing talent to consistently convert chances. But we’re going to find out I guess. I really hope I’m wrong but I worry this is a guy a step below what we need at that spot.

Is he getting paid Jozy and Jozef money?

The site also says that Jasson is unavailable. But that cannot be true given that he's played MLS minutes this season.

It also says that Chris Gloster is a homegrown player. What?

Something is wrong.

Gloster was a Homegrown with the Red Bulls and we traded for his Homegrown rights. That's why it was such a good signing because regardless of the contract we negotiate with him, we get added team payroll flexibility because he came through the MLS academy system, even if it wasn't ours.

were not getting a villa caliber player anytime soon, if that is what you are hoping for then lol you will be waiting for years ( or maybe it never comes). They will try to make up his goals and assist numbers with different pieces- Medina/ taty/ Thiago/ Heber and maybe another young DP somewhere down the line.

I agree with this. Taty can definitely be a key part of a complete, trophy-competitive attack. But he's not going to do it alone like Villa did.

As mentioned before, if Taty can be a little more clinical... we will be very happy. Let’s see what Thiago brings to the attack. Considering we earned 3 points but were screwed out of 2 of them v. Toronto without Morales and Morales, I’m more optimistic than I expected to be at this point. We’ve had some beautiful direct balls over the last couple matches but haven’t been able to finish. I’m gonna feel confident this team gets better and all the pieces start to transform into one super colossal soccer beast.

arguably, this is a better approach anyway. you don't want to rely on one player who can go out on injury or just loses their mojo.

A group effort is always best, even if a single superstar is fantastic to watch.

true, the counter argument would be that in a playoff situation there would be no one of that top tier caliber that can push us thru. Of course, we did have villa and it did not help in our playoff years with him.

Are we still under the impression Santiago Rodriguez comes this summer? Hope they’re working on his visa now, can’t afford to wait months…

potential young DP...$12M fee...Winger

EDIT: Apparently he has/had injury on his knee and has not lived up to the pre injury hype, still 18. i cant seem to find what his injury was though.

EDIT 2: The fee can reach $12M but after certain targets are met ( goals, minutes, games etc), i have not found how much the initial payment is now, and apparently its a five year contract.
