2021 Roster Discussion

Some version of this remains possible. I still think that the NYCFC 2.0 starts once the stadium is announced/opened, and we remain in a holding pattern acquisition strategy until then.

I agree with this. I don't think this club drops much money at all during the winter window. Without fans in the stadium they aren't generating nearly the revenue they did pre-pandemic. CFG isn't just going to flush money down the drain. They're going to bring in some young South or Central American players that they can eventually move on to Europe for a profit. Acevedo is a perfect example. The transfer fee was $2.5 million and I'm sure his salary is very low. If they can keep him here and he shows promise, maybe they sell him after the 2021 season for $4 million and make a small profit.

Honestly for CFG and making NYCFC relevant, fans in the stadium or not should not be a consideration of transfer spending in order to build a contending team to win MLS Cup.

Maybe they don't view spending money = winning an MLS Cup. Maybe their approach is "spend just enough to make the playoffs and see what happens."

Toronto 2017?
Because of Giovinco? Sure. But Maxi fits that description as well, he just had a brief stop in Mexico before coming here.

Not sure if we're including Bradley and Altidore as fitting that description, but I don't think anyone here is clamoring for those kinds of signings as DPs.

I mean all three of their DPs, yeah. All of them with several seasons of experience in top European leagues (their non-DPs were guys like Vasquez and Cheyrou who fit the same mold). I know the league has changed somewhat since 2017, but I'm not sure who would be opposed to us signing those kinds of guys, given completely dominant that team was. The idea that building an MLS Cup-winning team requires some creative scouting in no-name leagues doesn't really hold up in their case.

That's fair.

Although my point was never that "an MLS Cup-winning team requires some creative scouting in no-name leagues doesn't really hold up in their case."

It was actually that the idea that an MLS Cup-winning team requires signings from known quantities in top leagues doesn't hold up.

Wasn't MLS's narrative for forever that MLS cup winners have to have an MLS veteran at their core?

What team that has won MLS Cup in the last 5 years didn't "try and get cute with under the radar guys in no name leagues"?

I’m saying that you can’t just do the RedBulls strategy. That’s what’s ere doing here.

Altidore was a fantastic signing at the time. Now he’s old. But Giovinco and Alridore is a massive DP move. And it worked.

I don’t know who the equivalent to Altidore would be right now

Look at Columbus who won this year. Their key signing was Zelarayan, who was not a “nobody” but honestly was a bit of a reclamation project from Tigres. They surrounded him with steady MLS talent and no “big star.”

You could have made a similar storyline for the 2019 team with Maxi in the Zelarayan role - not a “big star” but a solid player who found the right spot and was surrounded by MLS quality talent.

Ehhh, I know the club could spend a lot more and I would really love to see them start doing that, even understanding they may not start spending to the fullest amounts until the stadium is in place, there is room for improvement.

But comparing our spending strategy to the Red Bulls is just not a good comparison at all. Using Transfermarkt, here are their non-Academy, non-Superdraft, and non-loan expiration "arrivals":

2020/2021:
Dru Yearwood for 550k from Brentford

2019/2020:
Mandela Egbo for 110k from SV Darmstadt 98
David Jensen for unknown sum from FC Utrecht
Jason Pendant for unknown sum from FC Sochaux

2018/2019:
Mathias Jorgensen for 2.2m from Odense BK
Andreas Ivan for free from Walh. Mannheim
Marc Rzatkowski for free from RB Salzburg
Amro Tarek from Orlando

Compare to NYCFC

2020/2021:
None

2019/2020:
Nico Acevedo for 2.53m from Liverpool FC
Keaton Parks for 989k from Benfica
Eric Miller for 55k from Minnesota
Gary Mackay-Steven for free from Aberdeen
Gedion Zelalem for free from SKC
Gudmundur Thorarinsson for free from Norrkoping

2018/2019:
Alexandru Mitrita for 8.8m from Craiova
Heber for 2.75m from Rijeka
Taty Castellanos for 468k from Torque
Eloi Amagat for free from Girona

Hold up - Nico was 2.53 million, and parks was 1 million? And who said we aren't trying to spend?

How much would a 29 year old of his caliber go for in the transfer market? Probably less than id be willing to sell for, unless he pushes for it. We already have a lot if roster rotation going on, let's keep our best player. We'll never get an equal, or even close, right back.

i mean the teams mentioned are freiburg and dusseldorf so im not really expecting that much of a transfer fee. Lokomotiv moscow i think also showed interest. the big issue seems to be the travel restrictions and not being able to see family/friends, so i feel its very possible for him to leave.
