2021 Roster Discussion

There's some confusion from Kristian Dyer that we're signing a different Joao Rojas, but that other player is 31 years old and I assume it makes a lot more sense that we're signing the 23-year-old.

Here's the transfermarket page for the 23-year-old. Doesn't appear to be a super-impressive player based on his stats, and I cant imagine we'd be signing him as a young money or DP player. Probably a depth piece.

emelec fans seem to not like him and are happy to see him go.

Some say he is better as a “second striker” type role or maybe even a 10 but as a winger he is trash.

Honestly, I don't think anyone is going to excite me unless it's a name that I know or their TransferMarkt value is above 15M.
If they can become a Tinnerholm type of player, I don't care what their name or value is.

...Thing is, they also have to become a tinnerholm-type player.

his point was excitement of the transfer news. i'm in the same boat. not much excitement with this news... :/

whether you get excited later about the player due to his performance (i.e., if he becomes a tinnerholm type player) is irrelevant.

Oh, I understand what he's saying - I'm saying I'm fine with any transfer as long as they turn out solid+. Rocha has been a solid+ signing so far. Miller was not. Both were "meh" signings at the time, but I think Rocha deserves a place on the bench.

i was not high on rocha at first because Dome put him as a LWB. He's too slow and just doesn't know how to play the position. As a D-mid backup, he's great. he performs his role with some moments of flash. will he change a game? no. but he's going to put in a shift and leave it on the field. Earned my respect as a midfielder.

Question for the board - have we been wrong about ANY of our initial reactions to player signings? I think we collectively have a very good track record on the unknowns or barely knowns. I do remember excitement with the Tinnerholm and Matarrita signings. I do remember collective groans with the Medina signing.

I guess many of us (me included) were wrong about Maxi. But that’s the only one that really comes to mind.

iirc Rocha was a pretty "why did we do this?" signing that turned out to actually be liked by the fans. Other than that, I can't remember outright anything. Ibeagha was solid and we were pretty hyped there. Berget I think was mixed? Amagat was what we expected... those are ones that come to mind. I miss Ofori.

I’d need to go back and check, but iirc the reaction to Mix signing was pretty euphoric, a statement of intent signing that showed how seriously we were taking our inaugural season etc etc. He’s arguably our worst ever signing.

Edit: Just gone back and looked at the Mix signing thread, AND looked at his salary, and yep, the reaction was completely euphoric and he was absolutely the worst signing in club history.

Rumors flying around in twitter that mitri might end his loan since Saudi team is not paying him on time.

I don't know how I feel about this. He wanted to go on loan because of his family matters and it really hurt our title chances last year. Maybe I don't want him back because of that. Maybe we can sign someone better with the DP spot.

I think it’s time both parties moved on here. I still think he got more gruff than he deserved. But it’s time to move on

He wanted to leave because of family matters related to COVID, not because he didn't want to be here or was a malcontent. To the contrary, he left on a terrific run of form. It's a shame he killed our title chances last year, but family comes first.

The guy averaged half a point per game during his tenure, so I think I'd welcome him back if he decides that his family situation is in a better place. Could they do better with his spot? Absolutely. But they could do worse, and they unquestionably need his big talent up front.
