2021 Roster Discussion

Wow, multiple people expecting Thorarinson to start at LB. I can't see it. Which does not mean I'm certain you're all wrong - who the hell knows really - but I just cannot see it. Maybe, maybe he starts the first few games but once Gloster and Amundsen get their legs I think he's bench material for sure. I don't think we sign 2 LBs from Europe if Deila were happy with Thor. But again, maybe you guys are reading his his mind better than I am.
It appears, in contrast, that we're content to go into the season with Gray as the only potential spot backup/sub for Tinnerholm, and he's not even really a RB.

To any competent soccer person, it's obvious that even with a healthy Heber we lack attacking strength. We also have an open DP spot. If it hasn't come now, one of those rumored names is coming in the summer. Probably.

We don't need any other pieces, depending on how Amundsen turns out (and arrives).

Also the Morales signing makes me feel bad for Haak. I wanted to see more of him this season. Hope Delia uses his 5 subs early and often!

doubtful we will see much of haak in league play. shame he didn't get a loan out to get more experience and playing time. we will probably see him in the open cup games, so let's hope we make a good run there. he's still also very young. sands didn't get any real game time til his 3rd year with the first team.

it'll be alright.

we wont know if we qualify for the US open cup until week 4. I think they waiting until week 4 to see if they send him ( or anyone else) on loan.

I don't want gudi as LB, but i think Ronny is going to put him there, at least to start the season, as you mentioned. Gloster has only started training with the team and even in preseason matches, he's not seeing many minutes. We'll see how it goes vs hartford but if he's coming on for limited minutes, chances are he's not a starter in Ronny's eyes. Amundsen is the wild card at this point but Gudi seems like a lock on LB starter at least for the first handful of games.

What's worse is that he's been practicing free kicks (as shown on twitter) and he was lining up on the ball with maxi when there were free kicks in the pre-season games. If we need a lefty taking free kicks, I would much prefer that person to be ITS.

SRY, RB. thanks haha

While Morales certainly has played a lot of time in a defensive midfield role, he's also got decent experience at all the midfield roles. I feel much more comfortable with him as a backup 10 role than anyone else we have. Certainly less flair and dribbling ability than Maxi but more solid in positioning and holding ability than Medina.

I'm hopeful as well that our offensive worries will be somewhat assuaged by a big year from Taty. He was in the top of the league in terms of shot on goal last season. Better placement and better luck would bring a really decent amount of goals.

If either Gloster or Morales came here to sit on the bench/did not get reasonable assurances of significant playing time, they’ve made potentially career-killing errors.

Never played for a first team. I hope he's good enough for MLS. Seems like a TAM signing.

When will we sign a DP? Or are we just waiting for Mitrita's family to be able to travel to US again after COVID is done?

If santiago rodriguez is coming in the summer, i would think he is our DP signing. if we are signing a DP forward, I would prefer we make sure we get someone who is truly going to put the ball in the net, isn't going to be an injury liability, and isn't going to be going into his mid 30s by the time he plays for us. I think those are big asks consider we aren't going to spend the money to bring in a super star striker.

even if we did spend the big bucks to bring in a superstar striker... only one i can think of who is going to be available is aguero. CAN IT HAPPEN? maybe....

They projected Tayvon as a RB on the senior team. This was always the plan.

Did anyone watch his announcement video today?

He was about to say his plan always was to come to MLS...and caught himself before saying “before retirement.”

I think this move means one of James and Keaton is being sold.

I also know that Hartford has asked for Justin back on loan.

Is this Santiago Rodriguez guy any good? Can we fucking stop wasting money on unproven people in shit leagues in South America?

You know who you could have tomorrow for free? Danny Welbeck. Or Theo Walcott. Or Jay Rodriguez. There’s a dozen guys in the Championship or Prem right now that you could have for the same amount some 20 year old U23 player in Colombia will cost you. And if you’re 20 and still playing with the U23s in South America, guess what? It’s not happening for you.

Thoughts on a 3 at the back in a 3-5-2
---------Jasson---------------Taty
Gudi------------Moralez---------------Tindy
--------Morales------------Parks
------Callens-----Sands--------Chanot
------------------Johnson

Looks like a good lineup to me.

I think we're two or three forwards away from having a complete roster that can compete for a championship. Hopefully we get those pieces in the summer.

I disagree. The one Gud quality he has shown so far is that left foot of his. He's always been able to whip in very dangerous crosses from the left side with great pace, it doesn't surprise me that he would have a decent enough left foot for FKs.

He was one of the top picks to take corners last year from Ronnie when he wanted an outswinging corner from the left side. The only two individuals who took outswinging corners from the left last season were Matarrita and Gudi (ITS took only 1) and when both Mata and Gudi were on the field at the same time, it was usually Gudi that took it.

lol stop. the "shit league" is where rossi and rodriguez came from for LAFC. its not the league but the player. Santiago can still suck but no need to shit on the league. "proven" players can be hit or miss. Almiron did well but pity and kaku did not . its all a gamble when they come here.

speaking on wasting money, you really rather wasting money on injury prone wellbeck and think that is better ? we have that already with Zelalem. lol hes also not coming in as a TAM thats a DP spot.

as for the championship players. no they are not the same as a younger 20 yr old kid in south america. their salaries are much higher and transfer fees higher( unless you talking about bottom feeder clubs in championship then maybe) plus if they top half of the league with a chance at promotion, aint no way they coming over.

again, like ive said before. the penny pinching from CFG cannot shock you as it has been going on for 6 years. im not saying its good but at this point ranting about the same issue feels silly. its the reality of what CFG thinks of this team.

I don't think you could have either of them for a similar price. Of course they would be much better signings for a "win-now" club in MLS, and that is disappointing for us. But all 3 are playing in the EPL right now, none in a club likely to be relegated, and both Walcott and Welbeck have annual salaries of more than 4 million US$ and Rodriguez more than 3 million US$. Those salaries were agreed on years ago in what was likely to be the last fat contract for any of them, but it is still debatable how much salary they would command in MLS. All are over 30, and in the case of Walcott and Welbeck injury prone. They may be available for free at the end of their deals (or not, Southampton apparently wants to keep Walcott, who is on loan from Everton), but their salaries would made them over-30 DPs.

The guys CFG is reported to have gotten from Uruguay and Brazil are 23 and 20 y.o. and cost reportedly 3.5 million and 1.2 million in transfer. Both will be on TAM level salaries or less (I'm guessing Rodriguez will have to be a DP because of the transfer cost, although I don't know how that works when it is a loan and not a transfer to NYCFC)

So it's really IMHO an apples-to-oranges comparison.
