2021 Schedule Thread

Of the 17 MLS Regular Season matches in 2021, how many will be played at Yankee Stadium?

So between April 17 (Opening Day) and November 3 (Decision Day) there's 28 weeks. MLS is having teams play 34 games. So that's 6 midweek games for everyone. Throw in Champions League for at least 4 MLS teams and U.S. Open Cup, it's going to be a busy MLS season. And with international games too, we'll be playing right through them with player absences.

and if ronny's 2020 season is any indication, he will not rotate as much as he should. we are going to suffer many injuries and/or simply run out of gas by the end of the season. with covid travel, tight schedules, multiple competitions, and so far - a thinned out squad, poor player management is going to kick our ass.

Makes me wonder if they'll also push the end of the season back. Maybe they'll go to mid-November, have Decision Day be the weekend before Thanksgiving, then do a condensed postseason to get it done by mid-December.

But we're going to get 2 DP reinforcements over the summer. Sergio will be well-rested.

I hope he does learn from it. I think Vieira and Dome also learned hard lessons about travel, schedule congestion, etc and made adjustments and rotations as a result

I know that personally, I have absolutely no interest in being at a sporting event right now. Even after vaccination, I'm probably going to want to wait until most people have been vaccinated, or if there is another way to make sure it's not a dangerous activity. Maybe late in the summer I'd be more interested, but for now -- it's just not happening.

how old are you?

I want to make sure you all saw this. Might have been mentioned already and I'm sorry if it was. Enjoy Citi Field:

I think that's just rolled forward from 2020. If you've noticed that the Citi Field seat numbers are different than last year then maybe it means we're playing at Citi Field. I think it's going to be a lot of Red Bull Arena...

Agreed. The odds that they updated that part of the account manager to reflect where the team will play in 2021 when there is no schedule and the season start has just been pushed back a second time approach zero. All they have done is fill in some numbers to the 2020 template.

ETA: You cannot even assume those numbers will hold up, given capacity restrictions, moving locations, and everything.

We’re going to have 150 million people in this country vaccinated by Opening Day. Cuomo needs to follow the vaccinations here.

Yeah I think fans are going to return faster than most people think. I do, however, believe that fans should be forced to confirm vaccination in order to be allowed back in the stadium.

confirming vaccinations isn't necessary. even if you are vaccinated you can SPREAD the virus. if they simply enforce mask rules and social distancing, it's enough. the mask and social distancing is what helps prevent the spread, not the vaccine. the vaccine is to keep you from getting sick and/or dying.

cuomo seems to want to use the neg test requirement to allow fans back and at limited capacity. limited capacity will help with social distancing and mask enforcement. the neg test requirement is a nice added layer, but we all know you can be infected after getting swabbed.

my hope is that people are educated when they get vaccinated and don't just walk around thinking they are free and clear. we aren't out of the woods yet.

fair. But don’t make me wear a mask. Or let me sit with the friends I’ve made te last 5 years. Like there has to be a trade off

and I’m the furthest thing from an anti-masker. Just hate rules with no purpose

Getting vaccinated means if you get sick, the worst that happens is you have mild flu symptoms. For all the nut jobs that said “it’s just the flu.” They’ll be right post vaccinations.
When do we stop wearing masks and socially distancing in your world?

What limited research so far has indicated is that the vaccines do in fact reduce transmissions in addition to personal protection.

Yes. Too many people translate "there is no definitive study yet proving the Covid-19 vaccines reduce transmission in the same way that every other vaccine in the history of the world has done" into "the vaccines have no effect on transmission." And while I understand the precautionary principle, those are not the same thing. Moreover, this approach has a public health messaging cost -- we have a decent number of vaccine holdouts, not just the usual cranks but even among medical personnel and others - and you won't convince them to get the vaccine if you go around telling them that one of the benefits of getting the vaccine doesn't exist and they still have to live like it's 2020.

Yes. getting the vaccine means if you do get infected, the worst that can happen is you get some flu symptoms. I am not disputing that at all. I understand your point. if everyone in the stadium is vaccinated, then even if someone gets infected while attending a game, the worst that could happen is you get flu symptoms, which is no different than before covid. If you are vaccinated and later infected, then logically, you should have less to zero virus in your body because your immune system has been doing its job thereby reducing spread.

My assertion that it's unnecessary to require vaccinations is based partly on lack of data that these vaccines reduce spread and partly on individual privacy. As we know, there are holdouts and while some are just antivaxxers or conspiracy theorists, there are some who are waiting because they don't trust the vaccine yet due to the speed of its testing, manufacturing, and rollout. While I will personally get the vaccine when I am eligible, I do think the concerns of the 2nd category of people are legitimate and reasonable. Requiring those people to get a vaccine, just so they can enjoy a sporting event seems unnecessary to me. Also, simply saying "ok, if you received the vaccine you don't have to wear a mask at games" would just make the unvaccinated people stick out and possibly seen in a negative way. Further, by mid April, there still may be individuals who still can't get the vaccine yet due to ineligibility or lack of supply. To ensure the most people can go to games to fill the limited capacity as soon as possible, simply enforcing a mask+social distancing policy would be the easiest, in my opinion.

When do we stop wearing masks and social distancing? I don't think there's a clear answer to that. In my world, I would say it's a combination of vaccination rollout and a significant drop in hospitalizations. If hospitalizations drop to early summer levels and vaccines continue to roll out, I think we can feel good about going maskless again.

When Cuomo allowed limited capacity at the Buffalo Bills playoff games, fans had to show a negative test. He also said the Bills games were being looked at as a model for other activities in the future.

I am not sure whether the protocol will be the same for Yankee Stadium. As I’ve said before, sitting outside in masks several feet apart from other people has to be one of the safest activities we can engage in at the moment.

I do wonder whether the criteria would be the same for Madison Square Garden as for Yankee Stadium. I don’t think it should be - although MSG cert has better ventilation than the subway or someone’s house.

I also strongly hope that the Club utilizes all of Yankee Stadium for games. Certainly, the Yankees will be using the whole place, and while ticket prices are higher for the Yankees, both teams should be able to fill 4,800 seats. I am going to write my ticket rep and say as much.
