2021 Schedule Thread

Of the 17 MLS Regular Season matches in 2021, how many will be played at Yankee Stadium?

The key is that HBO has always been a premium channel. That is, cable subscribers only got HBO if they agreed to an extra monthly fee.

ESPN and YES are part of the basic package for cable companies, which means that every single subscriber pays for the channel whether they watch it or not. That's actually a lot more lucrative. If YES tries to sell subscriptions around the cable monopoly, then the cable companies will just take them off the basic tier.

p.s. - I know that Discovery is basic cable, but they are an exception, and don't drive cable subscriptions the way sports does.

I actually don't think that's the difference. Discovery and HBO are asking you to pay for EXTRA content. HBO Max and Discovery+ are giving you lots of extra content. ESPN+ is for extra content that isn't on TV. A YES app isn't asking you to pay for extra content, it's asking you to pay for the same content the cable providers get. So I think that might be the hold-up from YES doing a subscriber model. Could be wrong, but if I had to guess, that might be what it is.
The stuff you are saying is true, but not the relevant issues.

I work in a related industry and the reason they don't offer the streaming app is because it is not currently allowed in their contracts with the cable companies and they can't risk those relationships because of the $7 per household per month over at least 9 million households. That's $750 million dollars of revenue that they can't come close to replacing with an app. ****EDIT**** YES is in 7.1 million households, not 9, so the numbers come down a bit to a little less than $600 million, but the overall point remains.****EDIT****

Viewership of Yankee games is in the few hundreds of thousands, so if you were able to get 325,000 people to pay for an app for 6 months a year for the Yankees and maybe 125,000 more people to pay for the other 6 months for the Nets, you have an average annual viewership of 225,000 people. You'd need to charge them >$250 per month to make up the lost revenue if YES were no longer carried by basic cable.

As I said, this will all change when YES renews all their carriage deals.

Idk about y'all but even with all the negativity around here, I'm super hyped!
I can't wait to get disappointed.

(and I really don't mean that in a morbid, this club always disappoints me kinda way, but more in the love-hate relationship we all have with sports that leads to both emotional highs and lows)

how can you be disappointed if you adopt the MLS pundit expectations that we will be 7 or 8th in the table?

is this an issue with other sports? Like i feel yankees/ mets/ knicks/ nets/ rangers/ islanders games are all on TV ( obviously not including the games that are nationally broadcast on ESPN/TNT/ FOX) and maybe because im not following the responses for those i dont hear issues with watching those games.

some hate the production quality but not availability.

its an issue with MSG which stubbornly refused to make apps compatible with TVs. You have to stream on your phone/tablet and then cast to the tv. But dolans have been good to me. So god bless America i guess.

It feels like we haven’t had a game in forever.
Only 43 days until we're back at Yankee Stadium :(
Yeah, that's crazy. Haven't been to a match this year yet (or last year, of course), and they already want us to pay for half of next year this coming week. Seriously thinking of cancelling my seats. And half the matches in New Jersey too, which means an over two hour commute home. Not gonna do that.

Yeah, New York is blue, but maybe there's starting to be a hint of purple in there.

NYCFC is doing a $30+adidas hat if you buy a ticket in the corner flag zones with the special discount code... for the three upcoming red bulls games. They're really trying to get people to go.
... So I caved and got for the atlanta game. Anyone wanna join me? 7:30PM on a weeknight is gonna be meh to get to but whatever, I've done worse and I'm desperate to go watch games live. :(

Also got for the DC game if anyone wants to meet up:
Sunday, June 27th vs DC: Section 124, row 2, seat 9.

which hat?

It looks like the team is also reaching out to the NFL teams to get fans into RBA. They are offering discounted tickets to NY Giants season ticket holders for the next 3 games at RBA.

Well, talked to my rep this morning. There's no global opt-out for 2021. You can opt out of the New Jersey matches and you'll get full credit but the Yankee Stadium ones they anticipate are going to full capacity with no opt-out. So I may drop back down to monthly payments and keep my seats (and keep my place in line for the brick, of course). So I'll have paid for the full 2020 with no matches, had it roll over to 2021 in full, and will now have to start paying for 2022 this week, all without having been to a match since 2019.

In other news, after I mildly complained about New Jersey being a two or possibly three hour commute home for me after a weekend night match and that I much preferred Citi Field because it was much easier to get to and actually had some good food he said that next season they're planning most matches at Yankee Stadium and maybe three or four at Citi Field with none at RBA. First I've heard of this but I heartily approve if true.

its early for this, but we should keep in mind the schedule may be a little funky next year with the WC being in November.

For the record, Yankee Stadium is going to revert to mostly-vaccinated only for Yankees games starting this weekend. Have to assume this will be for NYCFC when we go back there, too.
