2021 Schedule Thread

Of the 17 MLS Regular Season matches in 2021, how many will be played at Yankee Stadium?

Simple solution, don't get injuries! ;)

I'm fairly optimistic about the season myself -- I think we're better than most people think, but there is certainly a scenario where we miss the playoffs, and it's not terribly far-fetched.

It's not far fetched, but I also just don't think it will happen. We'll find out soon!

It would be nice if the RBA games were noted in the schedule in the NYCFC App. Comparing the home schedule on the App versus our family calendar is a big enough PITA as it is.

The app is terrible and has been since it was created. It needs a big refresh. The results section is terrible. The standings are terrible. The schedule is terrible. You can't even move game tickets into Apple Wallet from the app when it takes you to its web browser. I had to go to the native Safari app instead and go to ticketmaster.

DCU has had an even worse broadcast experience than us, but now are streaming all games free on their website for anyone in metro area. Must be nice to actually be able to see your team’s games.

This is how it should be! Bravo to them. That will never happen for us though based on Yankee partial ownership alone.

You can see all of NYCFC's games as long as you subscribe to the YES Network. This isn't hard, and it isn't exclusionary. If you don't want to have a cable package, then it's your fault not the team's. The games are readily available on the most-watched local sports network in the entire country. You just have to pay for their service. I'm not trying to be obnoxious here, and I'm sorry you don't have a cable package. But to act like the team is doing something wrong by having their games on YES is ridiculous.

This is fair AND it is fair to complain that YES has bungled distribution by not being available on almost every streaming service (other than ATT, which I think is going away).

You're not wrong, but you're not right either. Yes, the games are technically accessible. No, they are not accessible in a way that's consistent with modern consumer behavior. It's not the 90's. If your customers have to buy cable packages just to reach your content, that *is* a hurdle to the many, many cord cutters out there. In context, the accessibility is lacking.

You can't fingers-in-your-ears this: https://www.comparitech.com/tv-streaming/cord-cutting-statistics/

Agreed. It's hard for new fans in their 20s and 30s without a parents cable subscription who don't have a cable subscription themselves to follow the club regularly unless they go out to a bar to watch the game that would put on an NYCFC game. During the pandemic this wasn't available.

I'm 43 and I haven't had a cable subscription in years. It's 2021. Cable is dead.

You know how YES could fix this? Charge an annual/monthly fee - for access to YES on their streaming app. Don’t make it outrageous but in line with other services.

therefore you could satisfy both the “shut up whiners and get a cable subscription” and “it’s 2021 make your content available through streaming” camps and we could all watch the games. And guess what - more people could watch YES content. What a crazy idea.

is this an issue with other sports? Like i feel yankees/ mets/ knicks/ nets/ rangers/ islanders games are all on TV ( obviously not including the games that are nationally broadcast on ESPN/TNT/ FOX) and maybe because im not following the responses for those i dont hear issues with watching those games.

some hate the production quality but not availability.

this wont happen, the whole point of YES ( and i guess the other regional sports channels) is to have people actually watch the channel or subscribe to pay it for its content.

Unfortunately, they would then give up the incentive for cable companies to pay them a ton of money on behalf of ALL of their customers. Can you watch matches on ESPN without having ESPN in a package?

We discussed this on Friday on the "NYCFC in the Media - 2021 Thread"

i mean i still watch the knicks and yankees and other leagues (and yes even some pro wrestling) so i still use cable/ internet package deal. That being said, i dont really have many streaming services ( just ESPN+) since i dont really watch TV shows / movies.

i can see the issue for those that just buy internet and stream everything else. but not sure what fans of those other teams i mention do to watch those games?

There's a very important reason that YES doesn't want to do this, at least right now. Cable networks pay YES a little less than $7 per month for EVERY basic cable subscriber in their markets. Whether you watch or don't, the cable company pays that fee. So yes is getting paid for so many more people than actually watch the programming. In order to make that up with a direct subscription, they would likely have to charge a lot more than $7 per month to app users. So, for now, the cable operators have a huge amount of leverage over YES. As cord cutting continues, that will change, but for now, that's a lot of cheese coming YES' way.

Discovery can get away with it because they are too important to cable operators because of the broad appeal and sheer number of stations.
HBO and the pay channels can do it because they don't get paid for every basic cable subscriber, just the ones that actively choose HBO.

I actually don't think that's the difference. Discovery and HBO are asking you to pay for EXTRA content. HBO Max and Discovery+ are giving you lots of extra content. ESPN+ is for extra content that isn't on TV. A YES app isn't asking you to pay for extra content, it's asking you to pay for the same content the cable providers get. So I think that might be the hold-up from YES doing a subscriber model. Could be wrong, but if I had to guess, that might be what it is.
