Good question. 8 pm kickoff is really 815. In the car at 1015. Back to philly probably 1 AM? For some reason, it's much easier to head north on 87 after a match than to hit 95
How are y'all going to complain about an 8 pm kick for a playoff game?
Come on. That's a great start time, as we all have time to get there. And it's 1 time per year. Either keep your kids up or they can miss this one. far more important to have a crowd there when it kicks.

Either way, they could at least give us the start time. 8pm start time, people tailgating?
I'm not shocked or put out by 8pm, especially because TV gonna TV. But the question is not whether to have a game at 5:30 or 8. If that were the only issue I would be shocked for the game to be any time but 8pm. But there is going to be both, and the question is whether to schedule the East coast or West coast game in which slot. Putting NYC on before Portland accommodates both sets of fans best, probably even those watching from home. Plus with the next being midweek school night, this would be the only chance for a family friendly start time until MLS Cup. That's on a Saturday, so whenever is good.
In the playoffs, the consideration about what time is best for both fanbases does not exist. MLS and the TV networks will put these games at the time that maximizes TV revenue and ratings. That's the only thing they care about it.
Whine about it all you want, complain about it all you want (and you should, because fans are treated like garbage in the playoffs), but that's the story. MLS and the networks don't give one moment of crap about fans during the playoffs. None. If you don't like it, don't attend playoff games.
(Not saying you shouldn't attend playoff games, just saying this is how they operate).
As I said above, it's like this in every sport. Look at the MLB playoffs earlier this year. They announced THE NEXT DAY'S GAME would be either 4pm or 8pm, and that start time was pending another result later at night. So fans might have gone to bed at 10pm not knowing what time they needed to be at the stadium the following day. It was totally bonkers.
Spot on, the tv broadcasters decide what game they want and MLS gets a lot more money from tv revenue than they do from ticket sales.
With things like this it’s a bit surprising to me that teams don’t keep prices the same for the playoffs in hopes of filling up the place to make it better for the tv audience. Heck for weekday games they should drop the prices and draw in as many fans as possible. Make the upper deck general admission for like $10.
To me the big issue is not an 8pm start time (as opposed to say, 7:30). The big issue is so many playoff games on weeknights. That means attendance will be low, and parents can’t easily bring kids.
For me, 730 is the sweet spot. Half hour pregame to preview the game and recap what happened earlier in the week. Most folks in the area home by 11.
Totally agree on heading north on 87. SO easy for me to get back to Albany after games...... God I hope the new stadium is at the GAL site!!!
So ESPN def has their schedule for 5pm set for an MLS playoff match. And FS1 has its 7:30 spot open (to be announced) on Sunday.
I’m pretty certain that we’re on ESPN at 5pm. No one wants to put Portland Houston on there after drawing 0-0 like they did last night. We’re New York City with David Villa, we’re going on at 5 on the larger network.

It also just simply makes sense to have the East Coast game on earlier, too.
Yep. On my Optimum app, the guide shows ESPN with the "Western Conference Playoff Game" at 5pm, and FS1 with TBD at 7:30.
Well if FOX is picking, looks like 7:30. I'm glad I didn't take bets.
