Alexander Ring [Midfielder]

Alex Ring has re-signed with Austin FC for a 2 year guaranteed and 2 year option option contract making him a Designated Player...
Good for him, but woah Austin what y'all doing?

To be fair, the same guy putting together this Austin squad is the same guy who put together 80+% of the team that won us the Cup.
That is an interesting take. I’m guessing that Austin doesn’t have the same global scouting network that CFG has. So it makes sense that Claudio who came from this scouting network would poach a lot of our players year 1 (that they could afford and we were willing to part with) because he knows that if they are being looked at and scouted by CFG then they must be worth it

Claudio did a good job, and David Lee is following on just as good. The CFG scouting network is the big advantage we have over much of the rest of the league. It certainly boosts the performance of our local sporting director; however, I don't think it really helped us the first couple of seasons because of MLS budget constraints. It wasn't easy to sign players from overseas. Once we got TAM and then the U22 initiative, our scouting advantage could be fully deployed.

I'm definitely not past Reyna criticism, and while the optics of Ring on a DP contract are terrible, especially considering he wasn't one here, Maxi now isn't one, etc.... I have to imagine that this deal is in range to be bought down by TAM. Ring now occupies their third DP slot and if they aren't going to bring anyone in as a DP now, why not go ahead and tag his as a DP to save the TAM now.

Then when they find the third DP in the summer, they can buy Ring down with TAM to free up the spot.

That's what seems to make sense in my mind, but maybe I'm also giving him too much credit. But he did have a decent track record of roster building here, so I'm more inclined to the former.

It takes three things to have a successful sporting department from a roster management perspective. A scouting network, an understanding and ability to flex the MLS roster rules, and lawyers to push green cards as fast as possible.
