Yeah, there were going to be fans that have this opinion, no matter what country, or what player was involved. And I'm sure very little, to none, of those fans follow NYCFC (and that's completely fair) and really have an idea on what a true leader and great locker room presence he really is, because what they're saying doesn't really hold any weight to me.
The interesting thing is, Ring retired from international duty due to the travel and injuries he was picking up and to really just focus on his club-level success. But I wouldn't be surprised if a little part of it (even if it was "unconscious") was that their national team was just atrocious and "what was the point" of spending all that time away from his club, potentially (and actually) getting injured to run out for a team that finished 5th in their World Cup Qualifying Group (only team they finished above was Kosovo).
It wouldn't surprise me for him to backtrack on that retirement for the Euros and for that opportunity. Does that make him "two-faced" or a "liar"? I don't think so, I think his expectations at retirement were just incredibly different and he couldn't see something like qualification to the Euros as happening (though I'm sure he'll never say that). But I do also understand why some of the Finnish fans would be pissed at his move.
