All Things Coffee ...

Good grief! Three pages of posts about a drink?!

I think I'll stick to tea bags and hot water. It seems way more straightforward than all this coffee memorabilia stuff.
We must all immediately set our profiles to ignore this person. Greater lunacy I've never seen.

No. Because a special kind of forum douche bag goes into a thread that doesn't interest him/her just to object.
I just discovered this thread and was amazed that there was 3 pages about a drink. I merely made that statement.

I don't really feel as though it warrants vulgar name calling or anything of that sort. I fail to see how that is related to anything that I said.

Regardless, you didn't have to respond to anything that I said in the first place. It's my opinion and I think I can express it where and when I please.

I am going back on message.

After giving away my last french press and not having any implements for regular coffee brewing (I still had/have a cheaper model Delonghi pump espresso maker than the machines you all are using) I picked up a Sowden Softbrew on kylelovescrayons kylelovescrayons' recommendation and have been enjoying it the past couple weeks. I've had aeropress and chemex, and still might pick one of those up at some point too, but wanted an alternative that provided a quick/easy delicious cup of coffee and the Sowden definitely does. A+

Just checked out the Sowden site and that looks pretty interesting. The only thing that worries me is the metal filter. I've tried several methods that had metal filters and there was always too much grit at the bottom of the cup so I always end up back with paper filters. So, how has your past couple of weeks been with that in mind? Also, if you make two cups does the second one stay hot long enough if you leave it sitting in the pot while you drink the first one?

Wait till we start the Bourbon Thread.
Makers for bourbon, but I prefer Glenmorangie (usually the Quinta Ruban).

Seth Seth If you don't like grit in your cup, this might not be for you. It's not a lot, I notice it on the last sip at the end of the cup. But I also love the occasional Turkish coffee, so it's not something I would automatically have a reaction to.

Are you using a chemex or something else? Just out of curiosity. I've never done a comparison of metal vs. paper on the same coffee implement. When I was looking at the chemex, I briefly stumbled across a coffee shop explanation of the differences of paper vs metal and their respective pros/cons http://www.clivecoffee.com/learn/2015/02/chemex-brewing-paper-vs-metal-filter/

Edit: to your other question, it doesn't particularly keep coffee warm in the ceramic

I use an AeroPress (with paper filters), so looks like I'll stay with that. Thanks for the "review" though. I also use a Bonavite kettle that keeps the water at my preferred 194° for an hour, so a second cup is as hot as the first since the AeroPress makes only the one cup at a time.

I like the idea of a Chemex but I just don't see how you can keep your coffee hot unless you drink it instantly. To me the AeroPress is ideal as you get the water to your desired temperature and make one cup of coffee just the way you like it. It's fresh every time, and at exactly the right temperature.

There's a great coffee shop in my neighborhood that's otherwise perfect but they subscribe to the 175° temperature theory. To me you might as well have dropped an ice cube in there as that's just not hot coffee. I love the place but I almost never go there anymore as the coffee's not hot.

Yeah - the Sowden - can be a touch gritty - I usually don't pour the last couple drops from the kettle (softbrew) into the cup. I tend to make a hefty mug and after a few sips pour the rest in so I don't notice the cooling as much, or use it for two people.

I am pretty happy with the metal filter for it's ease, simplicity etc. but areopress and chemex makes a better filtered cup.

MMMM Coffee!!!
