All Things Coffee ...

Decided I wasn't Brooklyn enough so I picked up a mason jar cold brewer.

Makes a good cup of coffee but still need to tweak the amount of water to add to the concentrate.

fucking hipster ... ;)

Got some great coffee when I was out west at Dinosaur Coffee in L.A. high recommmendations if you are ever out there. Very clean shop, beautiful space and tasty coffee. I also recently had the single origin espresso from kenya that intelligentsia has out right now. Very bitter initial taste but crazy smooth after. I need to find some more info about it. Lastly I was at the Bronx Brewery the other day. I randomly met a guy who is from Peru who is roasting a few doors down. We got to talking and he gave me some of his beans ... not great on first brew. Very flat, really lacked body. I'm going to have it a few more times so I can give him some positives and negatives before i ruin my local roaster friendship.

Also got some beans from Vachon coffee in Seatle as a gift. Haven't made them yet - roastery seems awesome - it's just on a little island in the sound. We shall see. What are you all roasting? Brewing? injecting?

So I was in Baltimore this weekend and coffee was front and center on my weekend. I sued my buddy's Rok a few times - once I dialed in the grind - slightly coarser than my normal espresso dust (he told me I didn't believe him) it made some beautiful shots. Great to make one or two in a morning and a tad messy but would suck with house guests.

Also drank some awesome coffee in shops-

Artifact coffee owned by the folks at woodberry kitchen - fantastic brunch was had there (woodberry) solid cortado - was a need based stop and it did not disappoint. Cute space in an old mill building.

Ceremony Coffee - probably takes the cake - annapolis roasters - their espresso called "Destroyer" ruled my face. it was excellent as a shot and i sipped a latte - it held up to the almond milk and was still flavorful without being "Interesting" if you know what I mean. Teasted like coffee should, with some slight fruity acidy notes, not this coffee tastes like 25 things. Highly recomend this spot! Also had their guatamalan in a pourover. Very solid. Shop was very large by baltimore standards, plenty of seating, a cupping/education room, and stark white minimalist. Awesome shop! Will be ordering beans soon.

Spro - used to be one of my favorite spots in the city - they used to carry beans from all over and made it a point to get stuff from tiny roasters. Now the roast on their own. I will not be going back. Sadly they are into something they just aren't that good at. Bummer because it was an awesome shop. Most of the old baristas have moved onto other spots anyway.

So for those of you heading to the Superdraft - Ceremony is my number one draft pick for coffee in Bmore!

so planning a new subscription - one for espresso and one for regular -

thinking about ...

I want to do Ceremony's single origin - 2 6 oz bags a month of single origin ... mmm mmm mmm plus i can do side by side tasting instead of a gassed bag at the end.

The Phil and Sebastian one seems cool but I want to get a review from someone.

Kaffebox looks awesome - mad scandinavian like whoa!

we shall see.

Also going to check out hicollar this weekend.

Gotta take the wife to Hi-Collar.

hi-collar was excellent - beautiful coffee service - had madcaps guatemalan (forget the name now) that was excellent, mellower than i like, but had very appreciable flavors that were sort of underneath. A little bit like a slightly sour plum. The space is beutiful and reminds me of what i think hip bars in japan are like. Very expensie sake that i didn't even want to think about. Side note - R roxfontaine I'm headed to japan for spring break - let's talk awesome things to do!

I get some brew from https://counterculturecoffee.com/ at a place called http://www.rexcoffeenyc.com/ - It's pretty good coffee if you like to try some different stuff.

Speaking of sake bars though. There's a cool underground sake bar in the e village called Decibel. It's been there forever. I've stumbled out of there a few too many.

Living in the mid-atlantic counter culture was the main supplier of good to great coffee shops. They have quite a few delicious coffees - I was never a fan of the blends that most shops sadly used (the one with a donkey on it maybe)

I copied this link a while back and emailed it to myself with intentions of trying some of the recommendations. Sadly I never got around to trying any and currently I have not had a cup of coffee in like 5 weeks. I still keep the link in my email for some day when I get back on the coffee wagon (off the wagon?). Anyway hope this is useful to someone:

I was looking at Sowdens over the weekend. Is it accurate to say they are an alternative to french presses? I had thought they were more to do with pour overs...

Both are a type of filtered drip - I consider it an alternative to the French press since you don't need a paper or other filter (similar to v60 or kalita) but dissimilar to the french press there is no actual pressing. Only pouring capping and waiting. That being said it's in the vein of both. Sowden is just the simplest way in my opinion.

Side note I made a v60 pour-over the other day - forgot how yummy it can be.

I'd even say the softbrew is a good replacement for the french press and a regular old drip machine - it's that easy - but a kalita and chemex and aeropress make a superior cup ...

That being said got some El Triumfo - a Guatamalan from Drop Coffee in Stockholm ... mm mm good. Holds up nicely as an espresso and in my chemex and kalita, haven't done anything else with it. Beans available at Box Kite's uptown location.

Getting pumped for Japan and all the crazy tokyo shops ... mmmmmmmm
