Alleged Sexual Harassment at NYCFC

Yeah, it's not the greatest comparison. But what I'm paying for is the team on the field, their performance, and how value experience for my season tickets.

How many people dropped season tickets to the Washington Football Team after their sexual harassment scandal?
This was about asking for answers, not about cancelling season tickets. Both of which are reasonable things IMO.

Without checking, can you answer what brand/company is/are your:
  • Stove

  • Mattress
  • Car
  • Toilet
  • Pots and pans
  • Computer
  • Phone
  • Pen
  • TV
  • Scissors
  • Couch
  • Soccer team
You probably had some on that list that you didn't know and some on that list that were not just known but evoked deep emotion.

Ask any brand marketer and they will tell you the holy grail of branding is not that you like the product but that you identify the product with your sense of self.

And yes
  • I'm an NYCFC fan
More than any other product in existence, sports teams attempt to build their product into your sense of self, into your very identity. That's a double edged sword. On the positive it means their fans are very loyal with extremely high switching costs to abandon them with or without switching to another team. On the negative it also means that they desire and expect more inside info, even (sometimes especially) stuff you'd rather they not know. When you identify yourself with the product, finding out about the product is almost a form of self discovery.

So the objective NYCFC pursues - fan identity with the team - is exactly the mechanism that drives the fans feeling of both desire and right to know. (As an aside, this is the reason that Apple is a very poor counter-example. Apple's ardent fans absolutely identify with their products and absolutely do demand the same kind of inside info we seek from NYCFC. Bic users not so much.)

None of that translates into the "right" to know. Rights are granted only by society or by god (if you believe in god). But great branding certainly gives people the insatiable desire to know.
 
From the CEO -- I can't believe he tried to steal a player's post-game interview thunder:

NYCFC has always been a Club committed to aligning with industry best practices in the area of harassment prevention and workplace conduct training, but we are now committing to do even more. Our focus is first on preventing such behavior by building upon our existing education and awareness trainings and improving our current policy to institute clearer protocols around such misconduct:
  • While NY law requires sexual harassment training 1x a year for all employees, we have increased our trainings to 2x a year
  • We will include interns and those individuals employed by third party staffing agencies in all employee trainings going forward
  • We are revamping the intern program including reviewing and revising the process in which interns are recruited, hired, trained, supervised and managed during the course of their internships
  • We are exploring additional methods of educating players in addition to the mandatory MLS training, including training on Club policies and procedures
  • We are enhancing our existing reporting processes for victims of misconduct (e.g. reporting directly to HR and/or legal)
Our entire full-time and part-time staff (including coaches, academy staff and Sporting) recently participated in a live mandatory harassment and workplace conduct training. Working in conjunction with MLS, our first team players will participate in an additional training session in December, which is on the heels of an MLSPA-led anti-harassment and anti-discrimination training that took place this Fall 2020. We believe it is critically important to encourage and empower people to come forward and report issues or concerns when they happen so we can quickly investigate, address them and take appropriate corrective action. If there is improper conduct, we truly want it to stop immediately, rather than learning about it weeks, months or even years later.

Put simply, we adopt a zero-tolerance approach in matters of this nature. While we cannot change what happened, we have taken immediate action and will do everything in our power to ensure that something like this does not ever happen at the Club again.
 
My point is that he is not the person who should be corroborating those details. His job is to answer on-field questions, not organizational ones. When players in any sport are asked about organizational philosophy, or what they think a team needs to be a winner, they always defer to the general manager. Just because this is a more serious story doesn't mean they should answer any differently. It's just not for the player to answer - and especially 20 minutes after a postseason defeat. Even if Keaton would want to give an answer, he's just not in the frame of mind to give you anything substantial because of how upset he is in that moment over the season ending.

And as for your response about how tight they are with access -- I completely get that, and I completely understand how frustrating it is. Which is why I think asking during pregame media sessions is completely acceptable. Especially of the coach, though he will likely defer to his higher-ups, too, because again -- he's not the one setting whatever new policy they have, so it's just not his place to say. Even if he knew what they were doing, he still wouldn't give you anything because it's the people above him who need to answer for it.

In listening to that exchange that was posted, it also came really close to John badgering Keaton, which is part of what rubbed me the wrong way. I understand the frustration in not getting answers, but to take that frustration out on a player when it's the sporting director or CEO you're actually mad at is a bad look. Just because the CEO, sporting director, and coach won't answer those questions doesn't mean a player should be responsible for. And also -- if there is any player you should ask it to, it's the captain. Not a second-year young player. Even if the captain isn't the one who's made available, that still doesn't mean you should expect a young second-year player to have to answer for something he wasn't involved in.
Muller acted like a pompous and fatuous asshole in asking that in that time and his tone and manner. He was out of line.

I can think CFG are scum and also say that john acted (less egregious, but still also) scummy.

it just wasn’t fair to Keaton with the timing. I just wouldn’t do that to someone. Keaton was within his rights to tell him to go screw himself. Extremely well done by him to hold it together.

Fair, although I don't see what's "gotcha" about it. And again, yes Keaton was uninvolved in the incident, but the question wasn't about the incident, it was about the changes the club said they were making, which, if they were making, Keaton (and all other players and coaches) would be aware of.

I'm not sure why asking Reyna this question would be helpful because he hasn't been with the club this whole season and I assume would be completely unaware of any changes the club was making.

All attempts to ask members of the club to provide those details, before this question was asked, were ignored. Until after this question was asked.

I understand criticizing the timing of the question and whatnot. While I get that people don't like that, I'm not sure what chance this question would have to be asked until perhaps the CCL pregame presser, since everything has been ignored since then. I just don't see how asking this question to Keaton (or any player) is unfair, lame, or lazy. In fact, isn't confirming something one party has told you and affects another party, with that party, not lazy? (i.e., club says they are making changes, which would affect players and coaches, so look to confirm with them)
Dude, that totally came off as a wannabe gotcha question from Muller.
I thought it was way out of line.

Doesn't look like it, also his name doesn't match those in the article. This guy looks like he was well loved by the whole team, based on all the comments from current and former players.

There was a deeply reported piece about it from The Athletic, which I assume you've read.

Being friends with an accused harasser, or being someone who leaves a company where someone was accused of harassment isn't generally considered to be on the same level, as far as evidence goes.
