Away - December 15 - Tigres - CCL (Postgame)

That was about what I expected, I think. What a terrible spot to put these players in. They played hard, they just didn't have the horses after everything that happened this year.

Just glad no one got hurt while taking part in this farce. Hopefully they can all stay healthy this winter and rest up for the next six weeks before preseason, if it starts on time.

Fifteen shots, no goals.

Six shots, four goals.

Unrealistic to expect a result considering the hiatus and the depleted squad, but this is the season in a nutshell.

Here’s to 2021, possible attendance, and a striker (or two).

There is a short-term striker solution staring us in the face:

Available on a free in 2 weeks.

Glad I didn’t stay up for that. I’d really like for this team not to be an embarrassment for once.
I stayed up until 3-0.
I lit a flame of hope that NYCFC learned something from that Orlando loss and would come out and surprise the soccer “world” with a win, showing us that they have turned a corner.
I’m not one to chalk this loss up to it being expected due to the “hiatus”. The excuse of not winning games due to too many days between competitive matches is getting rather stale and I don’t know how anyone expects to win a championship with explanations like that. If NYCFC only had 2 days of rest to Tigre’s 5 days would we then be saying we didn’t have enough time between matches instead of too much?
I’ve been very critical of GMS and I think whatever positives he’s shown overall he doesn’t help this team. He seems kind of lethargic and at times I feel the dude is a step and a half behind where he should be. I’d rather have Jonathan Lewis. I think NYCFC needs someone with real pace. Sorry to pick on GMS, I’m not blaming him on the loss last night, there is something about his signing that seems misguided.

Final third/Creativity: Actually thought last night they tried to be creative with combinations in the final third but it was like they were playing with each other for the first time. Talent? Coaching? Both?

I have a love for the personnel on this team but wonder if it needs a shake up?
Maybe we are just one or two signings and a coach away from becoming a championship squad. As other teams in the league get better I have a hard time seeing this squad as it is currently made up bring home hardware.

That said, thanks to the team for 2020 and thanks to you on the forums for the banter.
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Blessed Solstice, Happy New Year.

We all must be so thrilled that the club picked up Matarrita’s option for next year.

Maybe we can get a discount for the skid marks that quinones left on his back last night.

What a weird case study he is. In regular games he's a good player. But in the biggest games, he's just the biggest liability you've ever seen. Completely loses his mind in big games. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that in big games, he's unplayable.

Did he lose his mind or was Quinones just that good?

I thought the team as a whole was a step behind Tigres the entire game. All a Tigres player had to do was drop a shoulder and just like that, they were flying past our guy with ease. We were made to chase the ball and work extra hard to keep the ball.

We started to have some creativity in the 2nd half but we just seemed so damn rusty. I'm not blaming this on the weeks off at all. There's just too much to consider given the situation we are in. This is not a normal year in any sense. I just think it sucks that this all had to happen this way during our first chance at CCL and probably our last chance for a long time.

This team has what it takes to be top of the league. We lost a lot of key players and I thought the game opened up a lot more once Parks came on and Medina came off. Park's ability to look for the ball and KEEP it was a huge difference over Medina's one touch and turnover. His not starting is just the epitome of 2020 hitting us square in the nuts.

I have not been big on Ronnie from the start. I'm still not a fan and think we could do with a better coach. I think he respects his players and is doing his best, but he's just not the type of manager that can create a championship team with what he has. A lot of decisions just never made sense to me.

I am loyal to a lot of our guys, but sometimes I wish they'd show more fight. When they stop just before going into a tackle or casually flick and knock the ball around like they're just messing around at training, it makes me question just how badly they want to play. To be a champion you have to laser focus and we just don't have that with any consistency. That being said - I give them a pass this year. It's been rough.

I am looking forward to seeing what the club does about our DP situation and genuinely hope they focus on bringing in a #10 to replace Maxi. Love the guy, but he's lost a step or two.

Here's to 2021.. it can't be worse than 2020... can it?

Did anyone else notice that the players seemed to be playing at 1.25x speed for most of the first half? It was weird.

I think the major problem with this team is a lack of playing discipline -- the whole is much smaller than the sum of the parts, with guys like Mata, ITS and Taty (in my humble opinion) all regularly trying to do too much. Even Ring is frequently guilty of it.

Yes, the effort was there in spurts, and we could not put it together this year. We outshot Tigres and had more possession, but did little with either. 11 of our 15 shots were from outside the box. 3 of those 11 were blocked and 6 were off target. All year we struggled to score goals against decent to great teams and this was completely consistent with that.

Also, I can't say Barraza played well despite the score, but he wasn't terrible. Of the 4 goals, it's arguable that he should have stopped only the third. The second and fourth were not his fault at all, and the first maybe could have been blocked by an exceedingly great play. And he did have one save where he bailed out Matarrita one time he got smoked.

I had similar thoughts on both points.

On outshooting and outpossessing Tigres, I think we had some decent play that allowed us to dictate things for the first 60 minutes or so. But the difference between a decent team and a really good team is organization and discipline and Tigres had both. While I was happy we were able to control things to a degree (and I don't think it was Tigres allowing us to possess it like say a DC or Portland), they really limited our chances and when they had chances they made the absolute most of them and decisively so. It was a completely fair result.

Barraza did nothing to make me feel good, but he really didn't have many chances to do that (outside of the 3rd goal you mentioned). He faced few shots and most of the ones he did, he had no realistic chance at. Perhaps he could have done much better at organizing the back line and communication, but that's not something I could pick up on so that would just be baseless speculation from me.

Agree on both. I think Barraza looked a lot more comfortable with the ball at his feet than Johnson does. He often opted to 1-time pass it rather than taking a touch to settle himself. Johnson still looks nervous when the ball is at his feet. It was a bit of an unfair game to judge Barraza's shot saving ability for the reasons already stated, plus his pro debut, plus against a quality opponent with clinical finishers. I am looking forward to seeing more and hope we have USOC in 2021 so that he has the opportunities to do so. He's still very young and I'd like to keep him on the roster as a solid #2, but if he really wants playing time we may see him going to another team in the next couple years.
