Away - February 20 - San Carlos - CCL (Postmatch)

Some perspective on the match last night

Only 1 Liga MX team (Cruz Azul) won their away leg and only 1 MLS team won their away leg.

I figured MLSsoccer's story would say how long its been since an MLS player scored a hat trick in the Champions League. The answer --- never before. Heber is the first.

Scoring 5 goals is great.

Allowing 4 goals is concerning.

Being the first game of the season increases the first & mitigates the second.

Playing against a team that looks semi-pro at best & unable to comprehend how to play an offside trap, is alarming. They seemed very dangerous going forward with playground freelancing yet wouldn’t give two fcks about defending. MLS teams are gonna play us completely differently.

not to take away from your point, but we only allowed 3

It was the first game of the season, and it was against a team in midseason form. We'll be fine once we get some miles in our legs. Our defense is a strong-point of this team, so I'm completely unconcerned about it right now.

Thought it was a pretty classic NYCFC game, from the constant falling over, the calamity defending, the sexy backheels that kept popping up, and the most Maxi Moralez assist you'll ever see.

I thought they played well and looked like they had a nice shape - players in possession had people in space they could pass to, who had players in space they could distribute to.

Overall, gotta be pleased with that as our first season outing and our first ever "Champions" "League" game. Should batter them in the return leg in New Jersey, all being well.

can someone make a gif of Deila stroking his ghost beard around the 1 min mark (while the question is being asked in Spanish)?

A historic first five goals scored in a road game? It’s safe to say that we know who the five best coaches in NYCFC history are
Deila, Deila, Deila, Deila, Deila

I'll keep it short. Defensive organization was lacking at times and there were some heavy legs. But that is to be expected a bit (on both ends) this time of the season. And also, the first two goals they scored were absolutely wonderful strikes, especially that first one.

Really? When I saw it live, I thought the second PK call was very iffy. But when I saw the replay, it was very clear. Maxi was fouled inside the box.

perception i guess, it was shin on shin, both going for it. he was pulling cleats and legs inward to try and avoid contact. i feel 90% sure if this was MLS its a no call.

For our first game back, I thought we played incredibly well. A lot of tired legs and such towards the end, but I also don't want our players being 100% full fitness in February. I think that would lead to tiredness and injuries much later in the year.

I'm fine with the subs around the 60th minute, give a chance to get some minutes for Maxi, Scally, and Taty. Especially for Maxi since he missed the entire preseason with his knock, I like that Ronny gave him a lot more than 5-10 minutes. I feel it was more important to get Maxi minutes than try to hold onto a game in which we had a ton of away goals. The rust was there, but Maxi's vision is just incredible. Pinged a few beautiful balls to Taty and Medina only for them to fumble the possession.

Defense was very open, which isn't great but I think the player's were adjusting to Ronny's tactics and those spaces can be squeezed with a little more experience in the system. Offensively, it felt more direct than when we played under Dome, which I enjoyed. I think when Christopher Jee Christopher Jee was talking to Ronny at the meet and greet he mentioned that he felt we played around with the ball too much and made too many passes in the final third. Looks like he's just telling the guys to get into the box, make some runs, and finish.

I expected a little more from Medina and Taty since they've already been playing games for a month and a half. They didn't look bad, but they didn't look good either. Medina started well but got lost in the game.

I'm not going to judge too harshly since it is the first game back. I like what I see so far, but I also won't get too excited until I've seen another 5-8 games under Ronny. Looks to be an exciting year if we end up with 8 goal games.
mostly agree with what u said, somewhat dont agree on the subs. thought the decision to make all three subs in the span of 2 minutes was a really poor decision that early in the game. I was happy with the Scally sub as it was a 4-1 blowout at that point in the game, give the kid some minutes. A second sub fine... but there was way too much time left to make all 3 that early in my opinion. Players were exhausted by the end of the game and a more educated final sub should have been made.

Agree. Getting tinnerholm off and maxi on were probably the first subs I would have made. I'd wait on taty since he didn't really do much other than get a stupid yellow. Heber was tired, but I'd have been fine with him just taking it easy as we kept the ball and ran down the clock. Then sub him off 10-15 mins to go.

Like others have said, I think Ronny felt the 4 away goals at that point was pretty much enough and prioritized injury fear over tactical subs. Heber is especially injury prone and tinnerholm is already carrying a knock.

He did indeed say the last part in the press conference after the game, the one.that was gif'ed

I wasn't expecting to see us in a 4-1-4-1, but maybe that was just Maxi not being available to start. More of a 4-2-3-1 with Maxi, but I liked how much Keaton and Ring were doing to get forward and create wide overloads. Mitri and Medina didn't look completely prepared for it and it seemed like Keaton and Ring were trying to occupy similar spaces.

Effectively Medina and Mitri both crept into the halfspaces very early in the phase of play, which helped us play very quickly through the middle. Part of this was a lot more one touch passing, weak foot passing between Sands, Keaton, Ring, Medina and Mitri, while Mata and Tinny transitioned into attacking positions much more quickly than we've seen before, and were playing balls into the box far earlier than 2019 NYCFC.

But yeah the other team were very porous so who knows what to take away from this.
