College Football

I don't know if we need a thread to discuss college football, but we do need this video of Washington State coach Mike Leach starting off a press conference with more than 2 minutes explaining why he doesn't care for zombies:

He’s quite frank about laying blame on his kids as being part of the problem. Bet he’s a trip to have a beer with.

About 90% of cleverness, wit and humor -- both good and bad -- is remembering prior references and stuff that was funny before and being able to pull it back out when an opportunity arises.

And the other 10% are dick jokes!

Aside from not having a lot of connections in the south east, Leach would be a pretty good hire at FSU, with money to burn on a nice DC to clean up where he struggles.

Leach is great and would be a fantastic hire if the rumored Bob Stoops isn’t hired. But FSU doesn’t have deep pockets, so a new pricey DC isn’t in the picture. Leavitt just got hired and he’s presumably the next DC after Barnett is kicked to the curb in December, and the rumor is Briles will be the coach-in-waiting after whomever comes in cleans up the mess. The only reason there’s an opening now is because the admin/boosters did the math and paying a $17m buyout on top of the new coach’s salary was better than the reputation loss/attendance loss/drop in local economy for the next year. If not for that painfully hard reality, they wouldn’t have passed the hat for the buyout.

The issue at FSU is that they don't have a permanent AD, and they are cash poor after paying the buyout to hire Taggert and now the buyout to fire Taggert.*

Those make it hard to attract a top guy who can be a long term solution - at least right now.

Not sure what a guy like Leach would think of an opportunity like FSU. He's never had a fair shot at a blue chip program because of the crazy situation at Texas Tech. Would he leave a good thing at Washington State to rebuild at a place with a lot of short term problems? Could they afford him?

* - FSU has deep pockets, but they've been emptied by the Willie Taggert Experience.

Their pockets aren’t that deep. Their biggest booster, Dunlap, passed away this year. The school is also finishing fundraising for a 60m+ football facility so boosters have already been tapped out for it and the buyouts to hire/fire Taggart. And as far as anybody knows, FSU’s richest alum, Sara Blakely of Spanks fame, isn’t a football fanatic, so she’s never been a source of budgeting.

And yes, the AD position is a problem. The guy in the temp position is a dollars and cents guy, who’s trying to right the ship, and had them on a good long-term outlook to restock the coffers, but this season has really been an iceberg of titanic proportions.

Sara blakely paid almost all of the Willie buyout. FYI.

Really? Has that been reported? Because as of a few days ago, nobody knew which booster(s) ponied it up, all assumed it was Dunlap’s widow, and Blakely’s not been a football booster in the past. There had been some sort of bad blood between her and the university because they evidently early on tried to lay claim to spanx since she developed it while a student.

Edit: and if true, and she’s onboard with boostering, it now gives FSU a hoard of FU$$$ to right the ship quickly. Lots of possible bagmen out securing 4/5 ⭐️ recruits. Would be the biggest game changer seen in Tallahassee since Dalvin.
