Columbus 1st Leg ECS - Postmatch

That’s his forearm and not his elbow and Meram has his arm wrapped completely around Callens. Watch the video from the other angle and Callens arm never goes towards Meram but parallel to him. If he was trying to elbow the guy, it’d be an entirely different motion.
Now I understand. I disagree that elbow/forearm is a meaningful difference, but I see what you're seeing.

My read of the situation was that he saw Meram coming, put his elbow up to establish his space (if he gets his shoulder in front of Meram, Meram has no right to get him out of the way) but put it up too high. I don't think he aims his elbow at Meram's face, but his elbow and Meram's face are going towards the same place. It was naive and maybe a little clumsy, but I don't think he's dumb enough to attempt, or gains any advantage out of, clocking Meram. Call it a geometrical miscalculation.
I think Meram changed his body position path after Callens turned back away. Thought that at the time, think it now.

Not sure it matters, but explains it anyway. Callens isn't Felipe. He's a pretty clean player.

The glance at Meram was an attempt to avoid meeting him head high (which Twellman incorrectly characterized as him sizing up Meram - he was, but not in the way TT meant). Then, after AC looked to the ball, Meram made a smart (smarmy) play that was Felipe like by running into his arm in a way that looked really bad but put him in no danger.

ETA: words above. And also, once they started slow-mo-ing it, I knew it was over. Clearly not a red during the run of play. Destined for it on VAR.

To further my thought process that I hadn’t added before, When Callens arm goes up, Meram does not have his right arm mugging Callens, but in the last picture it’s firmly around Callens. That says to me that Meram was working to get into a boxed out space at all costs and was already contorting his body 90degs.

I agree. When you try to elbow, you lead with the point. That was an attempt at protecting his space for the run.

For all the talk about MAPFRE on the broadcast and how pristine it is, the pitch was absolute shit last night. What's up with these fields being so awful yet Yankee Stadium is "bad for soccer"?

Yeah. Extremely disappointing how naive the referee was on this play.

Which makes you wonder if Alan Kelly does the same thing instead of Elfath. We all know Elfath is a brutal ref who makes the game about him.

The only thing I can complain about Kelly was not giving at least a yellow to Artur for the studs up over the ball. Would have put Artur out for leg 2 and changed complexion of game for him to play with a card.

Ha, I think there are a lot of people who are very vigilant when it comes to calling out refs. I generally don't like to comment on refereeing decisions because I like to focus on what we can control. I don't think they're biased against us as much as they are biased towards physical play. We happen to have technical players who don't get a lot of protection from referees but I think it's a systemic issue and not bias against NYCFC in particular.

Whichever scarf you picked last night...it was the wrong one

I know. I went with my Etihad Airways NYCFC scarf last night. Which is part of my 1/3 special collection. I took it off at halftime.

I'm planning on another special one for Sunday. Hopefully that will do it.

Why don’t you go with one that has worked in the past, or are you trying to tinker like PV?
