At work for this one and I can’t believe after only watching the first 20 minutes that we won 1-0. We dominated the early stages. What happened? More poor finishing?

I’ll have to check highlights later tonight, back to the grind.

We took our foot off the gas and against better opponents would have blown it for at least a draw.

Good first half. Disappointing second half. They better find their mojo for Saturday or it will be more disappointment. Parks was good as a second half sub, probably saved the game. Mitrita had good moments as sub, but ultimately didn't come through when we needed it. Rocha was... pretty good? Heber disappeared for long stretches. Oh and taty won us the game again.

Thought it was an OK game - good to win and keep a clean sheet when we’re not firing on all cylinders.

Tony Rocha has a decent game - breaking up play fairly well and looking to get involved.

to Davo’s lack of love for GMS - the wee man has two modes, all or nothing. In my experience he’s always been a little subdued on the right, better cutting in from the left. Seems like when he’s on the right he’s following the boss’s orders and linking up with team mates, but I want to see him go all in and take people on whole grabbing the game by the balls. Yet to see him do that.

I suspect that once he finds his feet he’ll start to show what he’s capable of, but I want to see it sooner rather than later.

Also, not only was I stood next to another Scotsman at the game but I met another supporter of the world famous Dundee United, so we clearly have a (relatively) massive contingent following NYCFC! Good times.

(I say good times, but I’m on the train with hiccups.... which is very annoying)

Bright spots:

Three points.

No yellow card suspensions.

No new injuries.

No rain delays.

Rocha was solid

Mata gave glimpses of good Mata

First clean sheet since July 3 nine games ago. As much as I'd like to have scored more, and understanding that the Crew have little punch right now, I'd rather have this than win 3-1. It's nice to see that "0".

How Alex Ring played 90 minutes in this match and didn’t get a yellow card is beyond me. There were two clear moments that he should have gotten a card. Chapman got word from MLS 7th floor folks that no suspensions for the derby. Thanks Chapman. 3-0-0 when he’s refereed our matches this season.

What I also liked was his covering of Tinny when he went on one of his runs up the wing, you would seen GMS drop back and cover
yeah, feel like we're seeing teamwork GMS and not so much take the game by the scruff of the neck and wow the crowd GMS. It's coming tho...

also, if you have hiccups, a shot of apple cider vinegar will clear them right up! Who knew? (my wife, that's who)

There as a play late in the game where (from my distant perspective behind the other goal) it appeared that Heber was mauled in the box. Was it clearly not a foul?

I get the points on GMS I guess just as a player I had high name recognition for (I really just watch Rangers when it comes to Scotland so have only seen him in action a select few times) I was hoping he'd come in and light it up right away.

first half was a dream until the goal. then we faded and continued to fade the second half until parks came in.

GMS was visibly tired but he worked hard tracking back to cover, as mentioned above. He had a few chances too, but couldn't quite get there. You can feel that it's coming though. Perhaps when he's at full fitness and it's more like 60 degrees than 80s + humidity, during the playoffs, he'll shine for us.

I think there is some conspiracy about not getting Ring and Chanot carded cause whoa nelly... he had some really close ones that would normally get carded. Chanot had a solid game though. Callens did too for the most part. Tinnerholm looked great and Mata wasn't as terrible as he has been, but the crew aren't exactly supreme attacking threats.

Rocha had a good game, I thought. He always made himself available and broke up a decent amount of plays. I don't think he really did anything wrong, so credit where credit is due.

Heber was off today. His passes, his movement, his finishing.. he was just a little off on everything. I worry that he's tired cause he certainly looked it in the 2nd half.

Taty was great except for the flopping. He's really gonna hurt himself doing that some day. At least he can finish a breakaway... unlike....Mitri who choked. He had a few decent chances. Two-Three bad giveaways that resulted in dangerous counters after he came on. I'd give him a C- grade for this game.

Maxi was great as usual.

I definitely feel like the boys felt much more comfortable on grass. But if we don't keep that killer instinct and confidence we played with leading up to the goal, we are gonna get pummeled by the red bulls. I think Sean was a huge factor in this because he kept playing long balls whenever he had a chance instead of distributing wide or even a short chip to a WIDE OPEN tinnerholm or maxi. Even when he was trying to distribute by driving a pass up the middle, it wasn't very accurate and resulted in a turnover and a quick counter. He needs to do better with his distribution. He needs to talk to chanot and callens for more availability and support. Had we played short more in the second half, I really doubt we would have had as many problems as we did. We went from something like 14 shots to 2 to i think it was 15 to 12 at the end. That's just bad.

I hope the boys get their groove back for saturday. I would LOVE to beat the red bulls and get 9 out of 9 this week.

I thought it was a foul from my view at the far end of the field. Defender clearly bodied up Heber and did not even go for the ball. Oh well.

Parks was remarkably good, like man of the match good if you prorate to 90 minutes. Amazing that he played only 13 min and seemed to completely change the course of the game. He won a lot of balls. Mitri was good on the counter with his pace, but didn't finish well. Mata is difficult to judge because he didn't make any obvious mistakes and in fact had a few highlight-reel moments, but on the 2nd half it was obvious CLB was exploiting the space he vacated and sending Afful down their right side behind Mata's back. Chanot was a monster. Rocha was OK. I like the fact that he passes the ball much quicker than Ofori. Doesn't run into trouble. The one still pretty bad thing were our crosses, from both sides. Aimless, and not aggressive enough (i.e. a lot of cutbacks for runners who weren't in a great shooting position) In general, our first 45 min, having 75% of the ball against a very passive rival, looked good but didn't produce a lot of clear chances. And from 45 to 75 min we played some of our worst soccer at home yet.

CLB is better than its record. Miles better than Cincy IMHO and probably better than COL and VAN too.

GMS is what he is. Can do a couple of flashy things. Has a good work rate.

Until about the 80th minute, it was brutally hot in the stadium. Unbearable.

Rocha played well. Tinny too. Ring was solid. Mata had one of his better matches of late. CBs were good, especially Chanot. Johnson looked good but shaky in distribution. Maxi was up and down. GMS useless mostly. Taty great run out. Heber was ok. Interesting they had him on the wing a bunch.

All in, we grinded out a midweek win on 3 days rest and got some guys a little rest.

Take the three points, Columbus came in to bunker (and NYCFC played to that in the first half). In the second half CLB started to play and NYCFC looked awful. As someone mentioned above CLB exploited the space from Mata roaming and continually had Afful with 30 yards of space in front of him in the second half.

Great that Chanot and Ring avoided yellow cards. Treats was ineffective (had to hit that counter at 80+ to wrap up the game). CLB came in ready for an L and NYCFC almost let them get a draw.

Take the unimpressive 3 points and make a statement against RBNJ (who won tonight on a ridiculous penalty call, seriously, look it up).

Also, attendance was so poor. Maybe there was 7k people in the building. Lean times ahead folks.

A win's a win. Take it and move on.

Chanot and Ring were beasts on defense. Those guys are just immense back there.

One of those nights where everything just seemed slightly off, but the mark of a good team is one that can grind out a result on a night like this. This is a really good team. Would be phenomenal to beat the Red Bulls on Saturday.

Agree Chanot and Ring both had great games on defense. Ring was better on the ball today. Not many giveaways, which was nice.

Yes, a good team needs to know how to grind out a win now and then. I think the issue is that we tend to grind them out more than we should have to considering the quality we have. We've all seen just how good this team can play. The first half of this game is exhibit A. We moved the ball with 1 or 2 touch passes, everyone moved off the ball and made themselves available, we built out from the back and played short on goal kicks and attacked down the wings. The second half was the complete opposite. Sean played long ball on almost every goal kick despite having options with both Chanot and Callens and at worst, a short chip to wide open TInnerholm or Maxi a bit further up. It was very frustrating to watch. Then our defenders kept playing long ball as well. Is this a question of trying to clear? being afraid to lose the ball having only 1 goal up? Not having options cause we're too tired to move off the ball? Whatever it is, it needs to be addressed.

We cannot win a trophy playing long ball. That's all we did in ATL and we were completely dominated and were EXTREMELY lucky not to leave with an embarrassing 4-1 or 5-1 loss. I think everyone can agree though, that despite the close score, it was still an embarrassing loss. But I digress...

Dome said in his post game presser, exactly what we're all saying here. I think it's pretty clear that the players know they played much better in the first half vs the second half. The question is WHY? They need to figure that out and figure it out quickly. The playoffs are coming and we need to climb the table. We can't afford to grind out games the rest of the season. We need to control them, possess the ball, wear down opponents, and keep our guys from getting exhausted and/or injured. Long ball takes a LOT of energy to play even if we're able to catch them on a counter, and that's a big IF since we're generally pretty damn poor at winning 50/50 balls in the midfield cause we're generally not that tall or big. So, what happens is we give up possession in the middle third very quickly while or defense is still DEEP in our defensive third, which allows the opponent to rush at us full speed and we see callens and chanot backing up more and more til they realize they're inside the 18.. then they try to press/tackle, but pick the wrong time and get dribbled/passed around like they're a cone on the training ground, or a shot comes in at Sean from just outside the 18 with plenty of room to pick out a spot. How many times did we see this exact scenario pan out tonight? Way too many.

Championship teams play with heart, killer instinct, and personality. For some reason, the last month, we suddenly lose these qualities for halves or whole games. We played much more confidently earlier in the summer. I really hope our guys figure out what's causing them to play long ball and correct it, cause if they can play every game from now til the end of the season like they did in tonight's first half, I really think we could lift the cup this year.

apologies for the long post. my passion for the game and this club runs deep.
