Columbus (Home) - Postmatch

I'm not ready to have any takeaways from that game. FWIW, I thought GMS and Tinner had some great play together and seemed to be on the same page throughout, which is hugely important considering what Dome asks Anton to do through the course of the match. I felt a lot like the team was saving themselves for NJ in terms of energy, but they stayed compact tactically, which allowed them to get away with it. Excited to see what Taty develops into. ?Might be hard to hold onto him if he has another season like this.

At 538, this win slightly increased the projections for points, GD, and the likelihood of finishing first went up 3% to 46% (highest in the East). But I guess beating the Crew 1-0 at home is not impressive because NYCFC's SPI went down by 0.6.
Also the chance of finishing 4th or higher and at a minimum having a first round home game is 98%. The chance of finishing top 2 and a guaranteed second round home game is 76%.

Parks was remarkably good, like man of the match good if you prorate to 90 minutes. Amazing that he played only 13 min and seemed to completely change the course of the game. He won a lot of balls. Mitri was good on the counter with his pace, but didn't finish well. Mata is difficult to judge because he didn't make any obvious mistakes and in fact had a few highlight-reel moments, but on the 2nd half it was obvious CLB was exploiting the space he vacated and sending Afful down their right side behind Mata's back. Chanot was a monster. Rocha was OK. I like the fact that he passes the ball much quicker than Ofori. Doesn't run into trouble. The one still pretty bad thing were our crosses, from both sides. Aimless, and not aggressive enough (i.e. a lot of cutbacks for runners who weren't in a great shooting position) In general, our first 45 min, having 75% of the ball against a very passive rival, looked good but didn't produce a lot of clear chances. And from 45 to 75 min we played some of our worst soccer at home yet.

CLB is better than its record. Miles better than Cincy IMHO and probably better than COL and VAN too.
I thought this too re: Parks. I may even go as far as arguing as he was the man of the match even though he was on the field for so little time, he was that good.

Mata showed more about how he's been such a frustrating player. Thought he had a remarkable game, but several times he flubbed attacking chances with a bad pass, bad choice, or that one shot with his right foot.

I liked what I saw from Mitri. Obviously wish he would have finished the chance down the left side, but not going to kill him for that. The move into the box and feed to Heber was a nice play that I wish would have finished better, and the pass to Parks leading to the shot was really nice.

If I can find some time, I may go back and try to clip up the "shirt-tugging" that Chapman called on Callens that took away Chanot's goal. Not sure who here was watching on tv (I couldn't make the game last night), but it looked to be a terrible call.

My takeaways:
GAS needs to build up his stamina before he can start.
Mitrita off the bench was actually very good! Except for two plays where on one he should have shot (when he was like right on top of the goalkeeper, before that he had an opening) and the other he should have passed to Heber (when he had the breakaway but had nowhere to shoot to)
Mataritta is trash
...But I understand why the team slowed down and let columbus in. Dome gave one of our best starting XI minus one or two guys . We have a derby on saturday. He played a good squad and probably told them to score one and then slow the F down

As others have mentioned - first half, very good; second half, poor.

And here is what worries me about that.

In the first half, Columbus were bunkering, conceding possession and hoping to hit on the counter. We controlled the tempo and the ball and finally put one in.

In the second half, Columbus came forward and started pressing, and we didn't have answers. And this is becoming a trend. Atlanta pressed us, and while we avoided bad turnovers, were weren't able to advance the ball into their half of the field. Columbus presses us, and we go from dominating possession to having less than 50%.

Not a good problem to have with the Red Bulls in 2 days.

I consider the Queens pin from last night as a fail. All the other borough pins are far superior. My borough has the shortest name and they cut it in half and made it look like"GAS."
"QNS" has no long time history or familiarity like "BKLYN." The most famous iconic Queens street art spells place names in full, and is legible. I'm not going to wear or display a pin that looks like it says "GAS."6E4CB64E-1EDE-416A-9D74-2F6B2E1957E0.jpeg

Also, associating a subway car to a borough with the least amount of subway lines was a head-scratcher.

I checked out 538's analysis of our recent games. They provide two metrics that they use to help forecast future games.
  • Shot Based Expected Goals (SBXG) - which is mostly what we think of as expected goals; they look at where a shot was taken, along with other factors, and total up the number of goals those shots would generally produce.
  • Non-Shot Based Expected Goals (NSBXG) - which looks at lots of other game actions (passes, interceptions, take-ons, tackles), but not the actual shots, and comes up with a number of goals those actions would generally produce.
Based on these metrics, our recent performance is not encouraging.

In last night's game against Columbus, we were 2.1-1.1 on SBXG, but we were only 1.4-1.3 on NSBXG. I think the first is soft against a struggling team at home, and the second is just very bad.

Against Cincinnati, our 4-1 scoreline hid the fact that we were only ahead 2.0-1.7 in SBXG and actually trailed 0.7-1.1 in NSBXG.

Against Atlanta, we were 3.2-1.0 in SBXG and 2.0-1.4 in NSBXG. You have to go all the way back to Houston to find an encouraging game; we were 4.8-0.3 in SBXG and 3.6-0.4 in NSBXG.

It's funny (and I appreciate) how we all see things so differently. I'm a long time Mata critic, but thought he was one of our best players last night. He made some flubs (including that sliced shot with his weak foot), but he was very effective going forward, and solid defensively. In fact, he made a sliding interception of a through pass towards the end which saved a clear breakaway and in my mind the points. And unlike some of the others, he went all out for 90, including a full sprint towards the end to save the ball from the sideline and preserving a dangerous counter. Obvi, he wasn't tested defensively like he was against more potent teams and had free reign to bomb, but he clearly performed above expectation.

And for the record, I thought that our other best last night were Chanot who was terrific, and Keaton in his short stint who basically preserved the points.

Agree with most of this except we weren't very compact in the 2nd half. We were pretty stretched due to the long ball play. Every time CLB inevitably won the 50/50 ball, they came right back down our throats. The stats in the 2nd half are pretty clear evidence of that with all the chances they had.

Very excited to see Taty improve. As I've said in other posts, if he played stronger and flopped less, he'd be even better. If he could refine his touch and 1v1 dribbling, he'd be well on his way to world class and getting called up to the national team.. i would be so proud. He's still very young with lots of potential to improve. We have yet to see Taty's prime and it'll be exciting to watch him develop into it (HOPEFULLY with us here in NYC).

GAS needs stamina, but he needs to play to get that. Doesn't matter how much you run on a treadmill, there's nothing like game situation to get you match fit. He'll get there. He just needs time... and maybe a 20 degree drop in temperature. Like others mentioned, he's coming from Europe where the weather is just very different. It will take time for him to get acclimated physically.

Agree it was probably our best XI aside from Parks... unsure whether Mitri or GMS would get the start, but if ISI were healthy and in form, he'd be in that XI for sure. Dome preaches professionalism and finishing off a game, but he's never said to stop attacking. His mantra is "take the ball, pass the ball", which he got from Pep. Keep possession and move forward with purpose. There's no way I think Dome would ever tell the guys to score one and slow down cause a 1 goal lead is nothing... hell, 2 goals is nothing (Dome has said as much before).

In the second half, Columbus came forward and started pressing, and we didn't have answers. And this is becoming a trend. Atlanta pressed us, and while we avoided bad turnovers, were weren't able to advance the ball into their half of the field. Exactly. This is where the "bravery" Dome talks about comes in. The weird thing is, I feel like this fear to play out under pressure only started in the last month or so. Before that, it was almost a given that Sean would play goal kicks short to Chanot/Callens. Not sure what's up with him lately.

The weather bit is a fair point, but I'm struggling to understand why he's not match fit. All the European players who didn't come to MLS this year took the summer off, had training, have started their new seasons and -- I presume -- are match fit. I have not read reports of widespread cramping or sluggish play in the European leagues. Why is he unable to get game fit?

Wayne Rooney is 5 years older than GMS, came here midsummer last year and started every game beginning on July 28 with minimal subs off. It's August 22. Why is GAZ still unable to go 90 with regularity?

I don't think the teams in europe are all match fit yet. It just doesn't look as bad cause they're all starting at a similar level of fitness. GMS is coming from being off a month or two from his last season in scotland, so that's one factor. Rooney is just rooney and different people get in shape faster than others. Plus, as you said, he started every game, which allowed him to get match fit sooner. GMS has only had 2 cameos, 2 starts, and some bench time.

As for the weather, GMS came from Scotland, which is a big difference from here and the other big european leagues. Current temp in Scotland right now is in the mid-60s and cloudy/rainy. Forecast for the rest of the week has highs only reaching the mid-high 60s. It's a big difference living in that kind of weather your whole life to summer in NYC. I'd give him another game or two before he's fully match fit. He seemed a lot better last night and made a lot of trackback runs to cover Tinnerholm.

Also Rooney coming from Man Utd/Everton I am sure has a lot more sophisticated/expensive medical/fitness training teams and facilities than Aberdeen

I agree that the GMS/Tinner combo showed some promising developments. At the same time there is a noticeable lack of chemistry between GMS and Taty/Heber/Maxi. I don't think I saw any of the attacking trio feed or even look for GMS on one of his many runs. It doesn't appear intentional I just don't think the mutual understanding is there yet. Once the chemistry comes GMS is going to be awesome, he makes excellent well timed diagonal runs, can take people on 1v1 and appears to have a nice touch on the few shots he's taken. All of this has come in games where he's clearly not fully fit so I'm still expecting a lot from him.
