Columbus (Home) - Postmatch

I know that neither bagged a goal, but I thought Mitri was much more dangerous in his limited minutes than GAS had been up to that point. Mitri had the breakaway that was saved,* a dangerous shot from distance, and two runs up the right side where he put the ball into dangerous areas. He was a handful for the Crew from the moment he stepped on the field.

* - Worth noting that this was entirely a solo effort. Mitri wasn't played in with a well-timed pass from a teammate. He won the ball in midfield and outraced the defense to the box.

Yeah I thought, aside from the finishing, this was the best he had looked in a while. Have to assume he starts in a front line with Heber and Castellanos on Saturday.

I think this lineup could be really dangerous against the Red Bulls:
Mitrita-Heber-Tati
-----Maxi----
--Parks-Ring---
Mata-Callens-Chanot-Tinnerholm

I was so happy when I saw Keaton come in. He is so good on the ball under pressure and he really did get us out of a few jams.
I like when he dribbles through people. He's so lanky it looks funny but more often then not he pulls it off. If he starts converting his shots inside the box after one of these dribbles it won't be long before is loan in cancelled (or just not renewed) and he is sold to a higher league. I can't say I'm a benfica expert but I don't see him playing for them, but I can see him getting into a promotion ready championship club, or low EPL traditionally seller club like Southampton/ crystal palace.

I think Parks should take more shots. He's looking to distribute, which is great. His creativity is appreciated and he's doing well at it... but he's clearly got a decent shot and should take more chances. Not only would it give him opportunities to score, but a defense that knows a midfielder likes to shoot will look to immediately pressure him to prevent the shot. This creates space in behind for our forwards to slip in. At the very least, it's a distraction for the defenders knowing they need to pressure and/or attempt a block, that will allow our attackers that bit of space to make a run and be fed in with a chip or weighted through ball.

I hope he stays with us another season at the very least. He was getting essentially zero minutes at Benfica on the first team and didn't start many games for the 2nd team either. Hopefully, they'll be keen to let us have him another season to further develop his playing and tactical brain (which is what Dome said was the reason he didn't play earlier in the season).

Every time he spins to get away from pressure I think his head and feet will end up out of sync and he'll get stripped of possession. But he pulls off these almost Pirlo-esque spins and then uses his size to body off the defender and shield the ball.

I agree with all your Mitri points but also think it's worth pointing out that GMS showed a super high work rate tracking back and made considerably more off ball runs that opened space than Mitri. I think the biggest take away from last night is that they are vastly different players. GMS is a high work rate 2-way wing that makes well timed runs early in the attack to open space. Mitri's effort in the high press and occasional tracking back have improved considerably but he's an attacker and we will never see the level of effort or defensive aggression from him as we've already seen from GMS. On offense Mitris rarely makes the diagonal space opening runs early in the attack instead he either picks up the ball early and leads the break or floats in behind the attacking line. To me the contrasting styles are a good thing as we now have multiple attackers that fill different roles as compared to last year:

2019
- Early runs to drag/unlock the defense: Taty, Heber, GMS
- Take people on 1v1: GMS, ITS, Mitri
- Drop in behind and create: Mitiri, ITS, Heber and Maxi
- Target man/hold up: Taty, Heber

2018
- Early runs to drag/unlock the defense: Berget, Villa
- Take people on 1v1: ITS, Villa
- Drop in behind and create: Villa and Maxi
- Target man/hold up: Berget

Add in the fact that everyone of our attackers can dribble and finish as compared to Berget and we appear to be in much better shape even with room for both Mitir and GMS to improve their chemistry with the other attackers.

There was one play from last night I remember pretty well where he had a fair amount of space and a much faster defender bearing in on him from behind. Instead of just trying to outrace the defender, he dribbled into the defender's path so he was able to get his body on him, and keep the defender away from getting to the ball. Its a small thing, but also quite brilliant in my mind.

Adding to the discussion on Keaton is that he's a big dude, and there aren't many forwards or mids that are strong enough to get him off the ball.

yeah that's the one i was talking about where he should have just shot but instead he passes. He reversed pass and shoot in the two mentioned plays in your message :p
if this is the one where he passes to heber which i think it is. the pass was the correct decision. the problem was heber didnt do a good enough job getting in front of his man and burying it. (i say this loving heber and not being a huge mitri fan)

idk, from our view (which was right near it from the 202 view, where Lion sits but farther up) it was very clear that he took an extra touch or two and got right up to the GK where he could have taken it a bit earlier and probably scored

Anyone else not shocked to see our offense sputter with Kevin Gilbride in attendance?

He was in the seat directly in front of me. I had no idea who he was other than the fact there were 4 media people with him taking photos and videos wearing XFL shirts. I so desperately wanted to ask and the woman next to him (who is apparently the team president), will it last more than a year? But I didn't.

I think he ultimately made the right decision, but as Kangaroo Jack Kangaroo Jack noted, Heber just didn't quite make the play he needed to.

Now, considering how close he got to goal, I wouldn't have been upset with a shot attempt there either, even though I think the pass attempt was the better choice.

It looked to me like the ball was behind Heber and not leading him - gave the defender that was trailing Heber the opportunity to make the play first.

Mitri needed to place the ball where the defender couldn’t make a play, much like in football when the QB throws to the outside shoulder of the WR so the CB would have to go through the WR to get the ball which either couldn’t happen or would be a flag.

there is a view in the replay that shows the ball was exactly where it should have been. Heber was just on the wrong side of the defender and a bit too slow to get there (he was really reaching for it). But he main reason it wasn't a goal was Heber was unable to beat the defender to the spot. He looked pretty tired to me at that point of the game, so guess he just didn't have the juice left.

Strange that it's not in the highlight reel as a missed chance.. i remember very clearly watching the replay on the big screen though. defender beat him to the spot.

Wouldn’t that result confirm the ball wasn’t where it needed to be?

No. The ball was where it needed to be. Heber was just on the outside while defender had the inside position, allowing him to defend and clear the ball away. See my crude diagram below. lol. Heber wasn't able to get there first and get better positioning on the defender. At least, that is what I distinctly remember from watching the replay on the big screen. Who knows if my memory is correct :) I was at the opposite end of the field so my memory is solely based on the replay as I couldn't tell what exactly happened during live play.
