Columbus - Postmatch

"Ball don't lie!"

I felt like I knew they were going to score off that corner when I saw the handball not awarded, but as mgarbowski (I believe) once epically explained, I'm probably just more likely to remember all the times my hunch was confirmed.

They looked dangerous to score on every corner. Higuain was knocking in some amazing crosses.

The Brillant hate at this point is incredibly unjustified, the guy has been rock solid since coming in for Chanot. The back line has been continuously solid. I agree with SoupInNYC that there was not much he could have done on the cross and there is a case to be made that it would be hard for him to jump with Williams using his shoulders as a launching pad on the other. But even if you don't agree and think he botched the plays those are two slips in a long streak of solid play no player will be perfect every play. People hating on him at this point are either being too lazy to reevaluate their position based on the bulk of his work this season or too stubborn to admit they were wrong.
Other then this week, hasn't he been getting a lot of praise for how well he has stepped in for Chanot?

Yes but after this game many of the old comments seemed to come back and all the good was ignored by some to allow for a fall back on their Brillant sucks position example:

Maaaaan, say it again! He (Brillant) got jockeyed there and I'm just SICK of watching him do stupid things on the pitch. I wish the guy well in his career but I hope he gets cut along with Khiry. We can use the space for better fits.

If you're going to quote me, tell the whole story.

So you being completely done with him and wanting him cut hinges on one play? I think this only solidifies my point that people in general seem overly eager to unfairly pile on Brillant while discounting how solid he's been for the majority of this season since becoming the starter.

No, I still want him gone but I was willing to acknowledge that something I was blaming him for wasn't his fault.

There's always a debate about how expensive we should allow our bench to be. And Brillant maybe too expensive for what he brings. But considering he's started more games than Chanot this season, I think he's given us good value. Ideally, if we could afford it, we should have a bench stacked with guys of Brillant's level, who can field in for a starter and not ruin everything. Brillant may not be the perfect solution, but he's not our problem. Our problems are: a lack of any consistent difference-maker besides Villa; both of our current starters at fullback; a bench from which Khiry, TMac, and earlier in the season Lopez, were the most often used subs.

I agree the money makes things tough in a capped league but I can't imagine where we would be without Brillant this year. In general the amount of finger pointing at defenders and calling for replacements to the back line seems considerably misaligned with our current stats. Across the season we've given up an avg of 1.26 goals per game while scoring a meager 1.65 goals per game. Take out Villa's 22 goals and 6 defender goals (Chanot 2, Callens 2, Billant 1, Sweat 1) and the other front 5 positions average 0.82 goals per game. That seems like a serious problem. I'm not sure if it's on the players or PV for the system or a little of both but those other 5 guys need to step up and deserve at least as much criticism as Brillant is getting for their lack of production.

how many players are you realistically gonna find for less that will actually do more than brillant? its easier said than done in fifa. but let's not forget this is real life.

For the record, I was critical of Brillant for both goals but still generally think he's under-appreciated. When I said he had his worst game for us in a while, I meant that as a compliment towards his general play.

Could be true. It's hard to gauge anything about him. Now that I'm thinking on it more, we have no relationship with this guy as fans. I then couple that with seeing the number 13 seemingly every time there is a glaring mistake and it just leaves me entirely disinterested in the player.

It can't be about intensity because Ring is INTENSE and we know that and we love that about him. It can't be about language because Callens doesn't speak English and I've still seen him interact with fans and be jovial. I don't think he's done any of the team player highlight videos outside of the pie challenge...

There's absolutely nothing to attach to, in my opinion.

Putting his face in front of an incoming cleat to score the game tying goal while we were a man down against Chicago didn't do anything for you?

Interestingly, you hear PV tell Ring not to be afraid to push up. I think someone mentioned how we hadn't seen as much offensive transition from Herrera and Ring recently. To be fair, Ring gives him one of those looks like "OK sure and maybe I will score a hattrick while I'm at it".

The crowd also sounds louder.

I love the way Villa went over to the ballboy and got the ball even before we VAR'd our way into that penalty.

These videos are always one-sided, but there were _way_ more highlights to pack into this BTS than most. That, plus the impression that the team was all the way up for this actually has me feeling more confident going into the post-season

He's a Stoic ;)

On the flip-side, dudes like Mikey and Khiry are really loud when it comes to social media and sometimes I just wish they would get on with it quietly.

Ok, what exactly is it that you want to hear so "we" can end this? You're right! I'm a moron and I should watch more of the game and appreciate everything you appreciate just as you do. Brillant has been incredibly solid and I let my emotion about a goal cloud my judgement about this fantastic player. He's been a staple for our team in Chanot's absence and I don't know where we'd be without him. Hell, if Chanot gets healthy for playoff play, he should probably take a backseat to Brillant so we don't disrupt the rhythm on the back line. #MyBad #Brillant

Haha, I _think_ you're being sarcastic, but the part I quoted above is a pretty decent summary of how I feel about Freddy.
