COVID-19 - Leagues Suspended

There has since been information that says this does not officially pertain to professional sports. That said, it's hard to see any sport playing in Toronto before their ban ends. Can't imagine any pro sport wants to countermand what the city is doing.

Scroll one post up. I posted a clarification.

Am I the only one that cringes when they compare COVID to 9/11? I don’t get it.

How much have we spent on the global war on terror?
How many lives have we lost due to 9/11 and 9/11 related illnesses?

How much will the total stimulus packages be from Congress?
How many lives will we lose in the local area due to COVID-19?

I saw the towers hit from Tribeca - was never worried in the months/years afterwards going about my daily life in the city and on mass transit - nothing really changed besides taking my belt/shoes off at the airport.

Right now, I’m nervous every time I go outside to walk the dog, terrified going to the grocery store, and my family’s lifestyle/methods of doing things have dramatically changed overnight, worried about my aging parents, and especially wondering if my daughter will start kindergarten next year in an organized format or having to be Fcking homeschooled by two parents trying to work full time jobs and concerned she’s not getting the educational support she’ll needs. Hell of a childhood experience for a 5yo.

This is so much worse than 9/11......

You sound (rightfully) very stressed. You’re living in the epicenter of it all right now. I have young children as well. It’s crazy stressful.

I think, though, that 9/11 being 19 years ago and COVID-19 essentially peaking/about to peak in the US is making this seem WAY worse.

I know I might get shelled for saying this but I see a silver lining in COVID-19; the United States getting our shit together as far as virus preparedness for the next novel virus. We got caught flat footed on this.

Things need to change and, Ulrich, I think we will all be getting some major stress relief by July 1, 2020.

19 years ago vs now..... really, don’t even go there with that line of logic. I was less than 1/2 mile from the WTC and I can see it clear as day, and it was not anywhere near as terrifying as this in the days after. Sorry, I’m not losing sight of things. This way worse than 9/11.

More NYC citizens have died from COVID-19 than on 9/11 already. The estimates are that almost 20,000 people in NYC will die from this. That’s like filling up Barclays Center (or a badly attended NYCFC game) with the dead.

this is monumentally worse than 9/11 - everyone is paranoid just leaving the house, and going to buy groceries is literally a traumatic experience because you aren’t 6 feet away from everyone, and we are all now wearing masks.

it’s going to have long term societal effects.

As someone who lived in Westchester, and still does -- that day was absolutely terrifying. But the days after were not scary, they were sad. This is scary from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. Every day. And it's been like this for nearly a month. I agree with you, this is worse than 9/11, and it really isn't close.

As another perspective. Living in Manhattan at the time, every day after 9/11 was scary. Every airplane overhead brought a fresh wave of panic. I don't remember how long it took for that to ebb away. I know I still don't like walking through Times Square. (Though as a NYer I didn't like that before 9/11 either.)

I remember traveling for work about 2 months later in southern CA and visiting my brother there. He took me to some outdoor mall / walking street that was packed with people. I went into total panic mode - all those people gathered together, perfect target. He looked at me like I was mad.

The degree to which this experience and 9/11 induce stress, panic, etc is going to be driven in significant part by how close you were/are. What was/is your experience? Closer to downtown NYC meant more panic and stress and PTSD. Now, more experience - having to go out in crowded places, visiting the hospital, personal connectedness to the sick and/or those who die - will increase the negative effects.

And, of course, there are individual differences. Some people are blissfully incapable of stressing over this.

Something else I'd like to pose: What will be the noticeable changes in everyday life moving forward?

9/11 changed security and privacy. TSA in airports and greater intelligence gathering.

We've had SARS and H1N1 in this country, but people in America weren't wearing masks outside when going about their daily life. When I go outside now most of the people that I see are wearing some form of mask or face covering. Whenever MLS resumes, sports will likely be one of the only times of mass gathering that I will participate in (others that come to mind are movies, public transportation, religious services).

List as a prohibited item at Yankee Stadium are:
  • masks or costumes
If someone doesn't feel comfortable going to an NYCFC match unless they wear a face covering/surgical/N95 mask to a game, will they be prohibited from going?
