D.C. (Away) - Postmatch

I need to point out the general anti-NYCFC bias the US soccer community has...

Ever since the CONCACAF bid screw happened, I need to point out everything!

And I was giving you credit it was due to the feeder team and midget comments the previous match.

Apart from a target man (Héber, Taty), the other two should be semi-interchangeable.

Castellanos is not a target man, he’s a headless chicken. Tbh, I was relieved to see yesterday that he wasn’t in the squad list. He’s not good enough to play on this level. Just as Rocha, Torres, Sweat and Medina aren’t either. There’s a terrible unbalance of quality in the squad.

IMO the jump in his level of play against Minnesota was significant. I'm willing to give him time in a system that the entire squad is familiar with before writing him off completely.

I’m sorry but this ”system that the entire squad is familiar with” is just a dream. I just don’t think there is a magic system that the gaffer is trying to instill to his players - they already know what he’s talking about - but rather that the players play well this week and have a stinker the next. Against Minnesota Castellanos scored a goal. That’s all. He doesn’t strengthen this team in the long run.

Wrote something about this over here -- citing for efficiency and not self-aggrandizement:

Neither of us have enough evidence to completely prove our differing perspectives, but I offer up a bit of directional evidence within. Oh and I wouldn't call it "magic" either..

Regarding James Sands performance yesterday, I didn't find myself being impressed by his performance. But that's all because he's raised my level of expectations from him now. The kid has been crazy good this year.

True. He had one mistake that I noted, and that was when he lost Rooney on the one really good chance that Wayne had (his missed header). Given the quality of the man he was marking, I will give him that one.

Remember that whole sequence started from maxi’s turnover in our half while playing out of the back. If maxi doesn’t screw up, sands doesn’t have to cover Rooney on a quick counter. Moreover, sands could have been positioning himself for an outlet pass for maxi when he lost the ball. And that’s the reason he wasn’t marking Rooney at that moment.

Btw. New nickname for Sands. “The Dornish Bastard”. Yes? No?

NYCFC is second in the league in chances created from open play? Really?
I'm not that surprised. Our system generates a lot of shots, which at least loosely correlates with chances created. But both have a weaker correlation with good shots, good chances, and finishing. We had the second most shots last year, and are #4 this year (and #3 when you correct for shots per game played).

Which is also an opening to point out that LAFC's lead in total chances created is very deceptive. They create 11.3 per game, NYCFC has 10.1. That's a decent gap, but LAFC's lead in the season to date is inflated because they are the only team that has played 9 games.

Don’t think the use of “bastard” is appropriate no matter what book reference.

Maxi messed up, definitely. But Sands was initially next to Rooney, and then as the ball fell to Acosta on the right side, Sands turned his back on Rooney and Rooney floated away from him to the far post.
