David Villa Departs New York City Football Club

I mean, in an ideal world, that would be the case. It's a salary cap league so it's hard to build a roster with large talent pools. Teams that are largely successful in this league have great academies and homegrown to supplement the bigger spending. We have two home grown players ever and only 1 has seen any sort of real time. They brought in some great caliber players in (ITS, Tinnerholm, Ring, Chanot, Callens) over the past few seasons but also have misses (Berget, Ofori, etc.) and in a salary cap league, you can't afford to have misses and with home grown players, the misses are fewer typically. Find me a DP worthy player who would of willingly came her last season that would of made our team better. My guess is that you'll struggle to find any realistic options that would genuinely improve the team. It sucks that they couldn't get him a Cup, but at the end of the day, the team went out and tried to win.

I'm not sure why you responded to a post focused on DP spending with the excuse that it's a salary capped league. That's exactly the point it's a capped league and there are only 3 slots where you can spend anything you like so they shouldn't be wasted. Anyway you cut it the team went cheap. DP spend has gone down each of the last three seasons with total DP salaries being approximately: Year 1+2: $18M, Year 3: $14M, $9M. They go super luckey with the Maxi signing considering they went cheap and he's played well beyond where any of his previous seasons would have projected him to be. So say we just look at year 4, you're telling me they couldn't have done better than medina if they kept the budget the same as year 1+2 and spent $6M on Villa, $2M on Maxi and the remaining $10M on a top flight talent? I'd bet it's pretty easy to find some realistic options for $10M.

As far as realistic talent we can find guys in the MLS that signed with other clubs that could have helped. How about Vela, Diego Rossi, Zlatan, Romain Alessandrini, even half a season of Rooney would have been better than what we got out of Villa. Sure, a number of those are old guys that are bad longer term signings up the window for Villa as now so who cares. I'm not saying they should be buying $50M players for NYCFC the way teams do in the EPL but if CFG want us to buy into all their global branding, deep pocket, superior scouting network, grand ambitions to win BS they better at least be spending and recruiting on par with the other elite teams in the league.

There's a big difference between someone respected and with a prior foundation in this community, who has a track record of good insider knowledge, and you.
Just because you don’t like me doesn’t mean I’m wrong

Reason I brought up DP slot was due to you bringing up Medina, so that's where the focus was on. In regards to the other players, Vela and Rossi are pretty much untouchables over there. Zlatan was always destined to go to LA and he would of been more of a headache than anything. Alessandrini who is always hurt? No thanks. Rooney is the only one that would intrigue me because he can play in a forward midfield role and help take stress off Maxi, but even then, NO ONE expected this level of production out of him. So out of all the players you listed, one was realistic possibly in Rooney.

The point is there were no standouts as way of DP that would of made a huge difference that are actually attainable at the time of the Medina signing. I'm not saying I agree with the signing as I would of much rather have them leave that spot empty, but it's not like options were there.

Also, didn't focus on the DP spot as much as you think. I spoke about other players who count towards the roster being misses and how that can effect a team more.

But in the end, it doesn't even matter at this point since Villa is gone. Need to focus on replacing him at this point. Attendance will fall even more if they don't get another big name in to replace him.

Did I miss some fighting? I really gotta catch up on my unread threads
Not really, the TL;DR is Kjbert said his sources thing, dkalev2 asked for sources and basically it went from there as "how do we know Kjbert's sources are reliable" which we've already had this discussion time and time again about what is "reliable" etc. so you can imagine how this went. :)
How old is Maxi in your picture? He looks so... fresh!

Team approached him in the second half of the year and he asked that it be discussed at the end of the season. He went and found himself a new club in the interim.

Maybe he knew what the offer would look like and found himself a better one. Maybe he wanted to challenge himself again in a new country. But the team did approach him and he never engaged back.

Appreciate your response. In that case, I'm wrong and I read the body language wrong.

even half a season of Rooney would have been better than what we got out of Villa.

Rooney in 2018:
1641 minutes
12 goals
7 assists

Villa in 2018:
1754 minutes
14 goals
5 assists

Crazy to me how the conventional wisdom seems to be that Villa is cooked and was an albatross to this team, while Rooney is this magical talisman enjoying a rebirth of his career. Maybe if the front office wants to bring in someone who can put up Rooney-esque numbers they should try...David Villa?

I think it has to do with how Rooney turned the entire franchise around. Goals and assists don’t tell the whole story.

And Villa didn't?!

Don't get me wrong, I'd have gladly taken half a season of Rooney's video game numbers instead of say, Medina last year. But people saying they'd have taken that over a year of Villa? Why insist that our own guy didn't perform at the same level? That's a triumph of narrative over facts for me. Replacing Villa is going to be a lot harder for us than DC replacing Rooney.
