Even Dome craps on Araos. Guess some things are universal.
What I don't understand is why didn't the club arrange a training match to keep the wheels rolling. I don't know what and how the team is training, and whether Torrent is doing a good job on the training pitch, but simply because of the results, I've lost any belief in his ability to lift the team. He should be sacked right after the season, otherwise the next season will start with a belly landing, and the season's over before it starts.
We may have "lacked confidence", but what I saw happen is that DC heavy-pressed and counterpressed us to death in those first twenty minutes and then we got roasted by Acosta and Rooney, singly and in combination.
Warshaw on ETR said something actually pretty insightful about those 10ish players on the roster who aren’t playing at this time of year, that they just want the season to be over so they can go on break. That actually makes sense, especially for those guys who have worked the whole year but can’t get a sniff while Taty and Amagat just walk in to the starting lineup. I can totally see that in Kwame’s tweet.
We should start a drinking game for every time that the MLS talking heads crap on NYCFC or call them an “easy out” in the playoffs. It’s all you are going to hear - not that it is wrong, but they beat the narrative to death.
In a vacuum, (and yes, I know, we aren’t in a vacuum, and this game came during a terrible run of form) did the team really play that badly yesterday? Away to a hot team, without our main midfield cog?
Doyle said DC “toyed with” NYCFC, now we are being called “an easy out”
And that’s not to say we played great yesterday and have nothing to worry about going forward. I just saw some encouraging signs that the offense looked better
Or am I just being crazy and grasping at straws to not be depressed about the playoffs?
It's been 12 games.
Twelve games since we pivoted from a team that won more than 2 points per game through 21 games to a team that won less than a point per game in 12.
The injuries are real but not that extreme.
Villa played 9 of the 12, and one DNP was a coach's decision.
Maxi played 10 of the 12.
Herrera was out for 8 games before this bad run started, during which the team earned 2.375 PPG. You can't blame this on missing Yangel.
It ain't the injuries.
The schedule was rough but not out of line from what NYCFC has had almost every season.

If I remember correctly, Herrera had quite a poor start to this season. Before he was injured, quite a few here were complaining about his form. But I guess it's normal that players become better in our minds while they aren't available for team selection. I just hope he gets back to his form of the last season as quickly as possible.
There are some players whose body language says they are not quite really pleased with the way the team is led at the moment.
I am ok with losing this one. I wanted DC to move up the ranking because I want to be able to avoid them in the 1 game knock out round. They are playing really hot right now, and they have the league's media team going ape shit with the last to playoff bound story line. That's a bad recipe for who ever gets them first.
Ideally I think finishing 4th is the best thing that could happen to us (assuming NJ doesn't finish 1st). If we can get a tie and DC win next week we will play philly again, which I think we can beat, then on to ATL which again i think (maybe?) we can beat but even if we don't it will be less demoralizing then losing to NJ. I just can't handle 4 months of thinking this shit season was ended by them.
Lets be honest. The league hates us. We are like the 10th fairytale story line the league wants to express to the world. We are not going to get any favors from them. In order of prefrence I would say the league wants:
1) Atlanta for its attendance hype
2)LAG for Zlatanmania
3)DCU for Roonymania & last to first turnaround hype
4)LAFC for first season trophy hype
5)SEA for just get in and anything can happen hype
6-8) Anyone I guess, they can spin it somehow
9) NJ or VAN for Adams or Davies hype train before they go off to europe
10) finally us cause IDK villa sunset tour?
11/12) CLB/FCD tiny market / indifferent fan nightmare scenario

I actually agree with you. And like you said, you really can't take this in a vacuum, as everything before this has been terrible as well, but I was somewhat encouraged by the second half. I was terribly discouraged by the first 20' however.
From yesterday, I thought the first 20' was some of the worst we had ever played. The rest of the first half wasn't all that great either. The second half I thought we played pretty well.
Here's some more positive spin to try to put on yesterday's game. DC was awarded a questionable PK call, and even if you think it should have been called, I'd argue that DC didn't really "earn" it (i.e., beat a player resulting in a needed foul, also think that the ball's original path was going to be dangerous). DCU got away with some questionable PK shouts (stepping on Mata's foot on the end, Brilliant got away with pulling Villa, and I think Taty in the box twice, hindering their abilities to get shots off). We've seen fouls like Arriola had on Callens given red cards before (I don't think it was a red, but those have been given. I am perplexed as to why that wasn't a yellow).
All in all, as you said, I don't think yesterday's game, as a standalone, is a reason to worry. But all the games leading up to it, and the reasons

I posted this in another thread, but if DCU wins their last match, they are locked in at 4. So we don't have that scenario available. We're looking at 3 or 5 depending on our result this Sunday. 3 hosts CLB/MTL (the best possible scenario). And 5 travels to DC (the worst possible scenario). Following this team from the start, I already know what we're getting.

Their first two goals were well deserved, but the third was not. There was that one chance that fell right in front of the net and ibeagha magically claimed it. We should have scored two, but we didn't. I would say 3-2 should have been the score

Pretty much this exactly.
Again, I don’t mean to say that the team played great yesterday, and should have won. I just thought there was some improvement. And I say that knowing full well that “some improvement” is pretty easy considering how poorly we have been playing.
That “goal” in the first few minutes that was called offsides wasn’t. The ball being cleared pinged off an NYCFC player to the DC player - that should have nullified any call for offsides. So if DCU is up big and NYCFC is tied or winning late, NYCFC will endlessly pass the ball around between the CBs for 10 minutes straight
