Does The Club Owe You Anything?

Bringing this back because it’s relevant again. I don’t get why a particular subset of fans continues to believe they are owed recognition for their voluntary efforts despite continually shitting on everything the club does off the field.

You can just follow the thread.
Despite the fact they were invited to tomorrow’s event they’re upset because the media event was held separately and their picture won’t be plastered over news/Twitter? That’s the gist of it right?

There are people that pay more than $50K a year for a suite that weren't invited to this. It was a media event. Invite media and soccer influencers (personally hate that term) to spread the news of the facility.

The person that runs the Twitter account will never learn.

Understand the club is a business. Fan support is part of the business, but so is media relations, sponsors, etc. Understand on a road trip, the players are on a business trip. Not a hang out with fans trip. The front office really needs to have a meeting with the leadership of this group to make things clear the relationship between a supporters' group and the team.

I can understand complaining if it was the stadium but as fans why should I care about the unveiling of a facility I am not allowed to use nor will ever be allowed to use? Sure it is cool to know we have a state of the art facility but pics is enough.

i know some of the smaller media guys though that are there every game and travel to almost all the away games and they werent invited to the event. Which to me is kinda messed up. I know they want the big fish, but the small fish are the ones most of us supporters are listening to anyway. Wouldnt have hurt to have them all there as well.

Were any small-timers there? Point being, there has to be some size limit given the training program, and if they got some of them in but not all that's fair. Plus, the pigeon guy was there, which seemed odd. He's not a reporter AFAIK. Letting him in but not any small media types doesn't seem right, unless he has a media role I don't know about. Is he anything more than a fan with a gimmick?

He's works with the club and City in the Community through the school he works for in Brooklyn. He gives a lot back to the kids in New York City and does it with NYCFC. Otherwise, it was just a good way to involve one of our first and most popular fans.

Thanks. To be clear, I have no complaint with him being there. He just seems to fit in more with tomorrow's event that yesterday. But I don't really care.

Agreed. My guess is they got exactly what they wanted out of the whole thing. Good looking people wearing the colors with good looking photos and video completely tailored to what they want.

Tomorrow will be 80 schlubs that look like me or worse taking vertical cell phone videos.

They wanted the public to see it the right way first. I didn't have an issue with anything they did except for making it sound like tomorrow was the first real look at the facility. Seeing the customized kits and boots and sandals etc for people that will never wear them again? They have a bit to live up to tomorrow. I don't expect my name on a jersey and all that jazz, but I do think there's SOMETHING to that line of thinking.

Yeah this is key.

I dunno the SC well but it's possible they may not have been bothered at all if the exclusivity and primacy of the fan tour wasn't played up so much.

Apart from the word “unveiling,” which isn’t particularly conclusive, I don’t see how the email invitation suggests any such thing. And the press routinely gets access to things before official grand openings or public releases.

I suggest front office has Fantasy Camp with NYCFC like USMNT does where people from 16-40 can travel to California and train with USMNT coaches and retired players like a USMNT player. They get hotel, attire, gear, etc. It is donation of about $2000-4000 but I think NYCFC would do a one day thing like this when NYCFC is on the road.

For $1,000, you get to do an NYCFC style training session with former coach Jason Kreis and retired NYC legends Ned Grabavoy, Kwame Watson-Siriboe, and Chris Wingert.

That's fair. And it says "fan unveiling" which does not preclude a broader unveiling such as the media event.

I'm usually on the "don't complain" / "don't do anything if you'll be unhappy if it's not reciprocated" side of these kinds or issues, but for some reason this doesn't feel quite right to me. A few reasons this may be so, stated not because I think I'm right but moreso to clarify my position:
  • Do we really think the media people would have cared if the fans had gotten first shot at this, vs. the other way around? I feel like if we are going to get covered by them, it's gonna be because we are in a massive media market, or we are doing well. It's hard for me to believe that they would care as much about our training facility as the fans would.
  • Pandering to the media may be incrementally better for exposure. Maybe. But this is exactly the kind of calculation which makes our club come off as plastic or inauthentic at times.
  • I don't want us to underestimate the value that the SCs and SS add to the experience of being a fan. I'm not in there myself because the people I sit with won't budge, but I appreciate what they do for the match day experience. Just as much if not more than I appreciate whatever incremental value the media adds to our club.
I suppose in the end, if we are going to be calculative about this, I'm not convinced that the "likelihood of incremental value" * "incremental value" for media is that much greater than it would be for some of our hardcore fans.

The value of bringing the media to something like this is pretty much zero. I can understand bringing in MLSsoccer.com media to throw content up on their website, but local media? Honestly, fuck them. They don't even show our scores. They send a crew out twice a year for the Derby which is just phony coverage.

I think people sometimes read things into ads and reviews that aren't there and end up disappointed because they deluded themselves. I know I have been guilty of this, as I have on occasion gone back after a disappointing experience or purchase to the text that created my expectations, and I realize I completely misread it.

I truly don't understand even being concerned about media pre-access. It seems incredibly naive.

As for the supporter clubs and people who travel. I further stand by what I wrote when I first responded to this thread when Dan first raised it. If you want to travel to a lot of away games -- good for you. If it's fun, and you can afford the time and money, then I'm glad you found an activity you enjoy so much. But when they start insisting they they be recognized -- officially by the club -- as the best type of fans, and specially rewarded [which they already are in some ways but I guess it's not enough] -- I can't get behind that at all. The club juggles these things to reward different fans and no matter what people complain.

EDIT: I just drafted and deleted before posting a litany of complaints by different factions of fans that their special brand of fandom isn't rewarded properly. This did not include any general complaints, like the stadium food should be better and cheaper or STH renewal gifts better. I just went through the type that say "fans like me deserve _____, especially when those other fans get ______" It went on quite a bit. I decided it would make too many people annoyed for no real benefit so I cut it. But I really, really can't stand it.

A couple years ago my signature here was [quoting from memory] "No matter what type of fan you are, there is someone here to explain why you are doing it wrong." I think we grew out of that phase, but some of this complaining -- and mostly not on this forum but in other venues -- is a variant of the same thing. There is no reason to be upset that the club does something nice for someone who isn't you, and no benefit to be had by judging fan groups against one another. And to be clear, "you" in the previous sentence means everyone including me, and not in any way particularly Christopher to whom I'm responding.
