One game does not make Ofori a revelation. Maybe Ofori was so effective (I did not find him to be effective but I’m playing along) because Mata was pushing so far up it gave Ofori extra time, but the same pushing up by Mata left the LB zone completely open hence Vela walked in on a through ball with Mitrita defending.....
I love how in this scenario you just laid out, Ofori only had a good game because Mata sucks. Impressive.

Is that what I said, or did I say that Mata pushing up out of his position gave Ofori more time since the defender was occupied?

You are correct, you didn't say exactly that in just the post I quoted (below).

But I don't think I'm putting any words in your mouth.
You must’ve been in the bathroom the entire time Mata was playing LB and leaving his zone open for Vela to exploit. He was utter crap, hence why he was moved out of LB. and he was crap in the Midfield, hence why Medina subbed in for him. Mata is a liability wherever he plays because he’s shitty at defending.

You made a leap with what I said by taking it out of context. Mata can suck and still draw a defender away long enough to create hesitation on marking which possibly gave Ofori more time - he failed at his positional role and as a byproduct helped Ofori by overloading the area. I’m still not of the opinion Ofori was good, hence why he was replaced by a guy already having a nightmare of a match.

With all the Dome hate, I do think there are a couple things worth noting.
  1. Playing Ring "out of position" seems to be having some benefits. Any CAM who scores a goal every 135 minutes is a superstar in this league. I know, small n. But still. He's been heavily criticized for moving Ring and Ring has produced in his new role.
  2. Sands looks great out there and Ofori just put in his best shift since his arrival. Does Dome play no role in that?
  3. [I've got no #3.]
I'm not saying this makes up for the record or any of that. Just offering up in the interests of a balanced analysis.
Counterpoint: his lack of creativity, vision and ability to draw defenders to him or occupy spaces to free up the nominal forwards has severely hampered the attack.

And his underlying numbers can’t come close to what he’s done. He might as well be a CB heading in a corner 2/3 games early on. It’s complete and utter folly to assign any value to that when every valid metric points to it being entirely unsustainable.

ETA: probably most problematic is he’s just not that good technically; whether it’s on the ball or passing in the tight spaces encountered in the final third, his technical skill is pretty low for someone charged with major playmaking responsibilities.

. I do think it's beneficial to know Ring can play a 10-ish in a pinch, but I think we'll be better with Maxi there as the General with Ring as our outlet man. We really need to offload some wingers, though. Preferably any that are Young DPs
I don’t really think he can. Maybe he could. But do we want to give him 6-18 months to figure it out?

Oh wait. You did say in a pinch. I guess we’re in a pinch. And I guess that is true. Woe NYCFC. Poor little club struck down with rare injuries across all of their strikers. what’s that you say? It wasn’t an injury crisis and everyone knew we were spinning our wheels without a single CF on the roster? Bullshit. No one could run a team that incompetently and retain their job.

Not sure if anyone is aware, but one of Dome's assistant coaches has been writing about coaching...

His writing wanders badly. I had to keep going back/rereading two different articles to make sure I was still reading the same one and it hadn’t scrolled in to a new article like some websites’ blog formats (like ESPN).

Read three paragraphs of one article. Not one reference to Pep. I’m out. Are we all farmers?

For what it's worth, my verbiage of "small n" was meant to convey my agreement with you that this is not likely to continue. Also, my preferred lineup has mitri, jlew and isi up top with ring playing the 8 and ofori on the bench. Just trying to offer a tiny glimmer of silver lining in an otherwise very bleak analysis of dome on these boards.

Appreciate it. A poll that kvschnitzer put out recently indicates that it might be a silent majority thing. Or could it be that the forums are highly selective? ;):

What's very interesting to note is specifically how he worded each answer, which has a big part to play in what everyone chose:
Happy
Kinda Happy
Miserable
Miserable and Sad

Note that there's no "Kinda Sad". If people are disappointed, but not "Miserable", then they'll choose Kinda Happy. I can almost guarantee that if there was a "Kinda Sad" option, we'd see a lot more of an even split

I also love how it’s Mata’s fault that Chanot needlessly gave the ball away while NYCFC was in a dominant spell of play.

So dominant, in fact, Callens wasn’t anywhere to be found. And Chanot could have literally just stepped up and played Vela off.
