So after today's game, how much is Dome redeemed? Did he just stumble into a 3-man backline blindly? Did the lack of a 9 like Heber really hold back the offense that much? Are the visiting CFG staff whispering in his ear?

“You are what your record says you are” - William Parcells

There’s no way for any of us to know if Dome schemed this all up, or Rocha forced his hand, or CFG higher ups did, or he just needed Heber to make it work. For better or worse coaches and players are judged by results. If they keep winning with the 352 and looking as dangerous as they did today, then he’s a hero. If we don’t score anymore goals for the next 5 matches then he becomes the goat (and not the good kind). But 2 home wins vs CHI & ORL takes him off the hotseat.

It’s at least a glimmer of hope. I will be looking more at awareness and synchronicity than simply results over the next few.

Sometimes things finally click into place. Sometimes other teams have a bad day and we get lucky.

I guess we gotta see if this is adam adam strodamas proving his skills, or if we turn back to garbage.

One win is nothing to get excited about, especially when it’s only 5 in the last 24/25 matches. And we were damn lucky today.

Any other day and Rooney buries that free header at the very beginning. DC was supremely unlucky to not score on 2 dangerous set pieces - they were there and Johnson redeemed himself from last match.

Mitrita’s goal was a pure deflection but Heber scored a beauty - refreshing that somebody isn’t afraid of a 1-touch shot.

Personally don’t think that was a PK with it being shoulder to shoulder contact. And Maxi is just horrible at them - is he even better than 50/50 when taking them?

We still have no discernible style.

Thought the ref was extremely generous to NYCFC today - could have easily had 3-4 persistent infringement yellows and Maxi was lucky not to get a red, and before anybody waves at the Durken foul, they were different - Durken had the ball and was a bit out of control after evading the first tackle; whereas Maxi was purely playing defense and lunged at a guy on the sideline who was flat footed and not going anywhere. One was a result of the ongoing play, the other created the “play.”

Sands is a beast. Should never play anything other than CB again. Has the composure, tenacity, and grit of Miazga but with far better technical ability.

Heber isn’t that fast as was evident getting caught on that break, but at least he makes great runs and has a nice shot.

Mitrita goes to the deck too easily. Not convinced of him.

Medina is a pure joke. Offers nothing.

Tinny always seems to be about to get in to a fight - at least once a match and sometimes more. Is getting a bit old as his schtick.

Mata had a pretty good match, although he lost his mark a number of times allowing crosses. Still can’t shoot worth a damn.

DC didn’t look like they had a plan other than send a long ball to Rooney, who didn’t win a single hold-up header, or play down the wings where they had a bit more success. They really just looked out of sync from earlier in the year. But damn did they have dangerous set pieces.

Twellman is a little man with his commentary. His scathing review of Lewis was ridiculous as his kick, leading to the yellow, away was no different than what any other player did after a foul other than that iffy PK award where the ball was kicked to midfield, and after dressing him down over that lack of maturity, Twellman later gushes over Lewis’ skills in the box. He’s becoming more and more like Lalas in that he ridicules for things he did as a player.

Medina is trash lol the sooner we get out from him the better - also we should cash in on Jonathan Lewis within MLS because we really don’t use him properly

Otherwise, no fluke we look 10000x better with Maxi back in midfield position controlling the game and an actual forward in the lineup

Ps
Maxi could never take PKs and hopefully does never again, and Sands soooooo nice

Sometimes I wonder if we follow the same team. Shall we make another wager? 2 beers that we get 6 points in our next 2 home matches.

Six points in the next two games wouldn’t change that I want Dome gone. He’s a fraud and has done nothing to show he has a clue to what he’s doing. Thank goodness we have a dozen wingers that we don’t now seem to need or have a place for.

I don’t see how we get 6pts in the next two matches. We caught DC today in a funk. I doubt we get Chicago and Orlando both playing like crap. Not that beating mid table teams is anything to beat a chest over. A tie and you lose. Sure. Two beers.

Don't know if the formation will work though in the tight confines of Yankee Stadium.
I don't think we've played 3 ATB at home since Paddy rolled it out against the Red Bulls. Fortunately I think the way we are trying to work those vertical half spaces between our marauding CBs, double pivots and inverted wingers should carry over quite nicely to the 4-2-4.

We seem to play a little slower that way, though and we haven't yet successfully gotten behind teams before they can form a low block. Having said that, we actually managed to maintain possession and shift DC's low block around a handful of times today, so maybe that movement we've been working on in the final third has finally stuck and will carry over to convincing home performances. I'm just happy to see us playing with style again.

Some strange quotes from Dome:
“I said to them at the time, ‘You are much better,’” Torrent reflected postgame at Audi Field. “‘Maybe you don’t have the right head coach. But you are much better than what you think.’
“If you have a doubt, ask them,” Torrent said. “But I said to them (after today), ‘Thank you so much.’ I’m not long here. I knew that before this game. I will try to improve this team. It’s my job.

Seems like a combination of an appropriate self-awareness of his current circumstances and the need to do better, which I appreciate, along with some language difficulties.
Could be, but he's used the word "maybe" a million times before, and this sounds like a deliberate use of "I'm not long here." vs "Maybe I'm not long here" or something of the sort. I could see it as either a language barrier thing as you said, or just he knows he's out within the next few games regardless of results?

Considering his limited English, I would give at least a 50% chance that he's trying to say "I haven't been here for a long time", although it has felt like an eternity to us.

Question and answer start at 7:21 here: https://www.nycfc.com/post/2019/04/21/dome-reaction-dc-united-0-2-nycfc-0

Not at all clear what he's trying to say but I heard it your way. He goes on to say he's sure he has the confidence of his players because of how hard they train. Then he basically repeats the same answer in Spanish with no hint of "I'm not long for this job," although he does get pretty defensive about what coaches can and can't accomplish.

Oh wait hang on there's another relevant bit here. Around 11:20 while talking about Sands he says "If I have time at this club, in one or two years we'll see three or four academy players. If not, when somebody else comes I guess I'll tell him, 'Look at the academy, because the players are good.' Because I believe this."

IIRC Dome played 3ATB last season at the start of the Amagat red card game against RBNY and again between Atlanta's first goal and halftime of the second playoff leg. So a grand total of like half an hour.

Vieira played a 3-5-2 for a few weeks last May between the Red Bulls game and Herrera's injury. It looked good at home against Colorado—but, you know, Colorado.
