English Championship 19/20

Rumors going about PSG's Qatari owners looking to buy Leeds, thoughts?
It will be an interesting test of character for Leeds fans. There are already close associations with QSI but not at an ownership level. Radrizzani says he won't sell, so maybe these partnerships are enough right now.

I'd like to think my fellow Leeds fans might kick up a fuss about it, protest in numbers, find a way to make light of the situation while bringing awareness to it. But I saw a poll that was around 65% approval IIRC.

Obviously there are the human rights concerns but I'm also just worried/curious what will happen when there are too many teams owned by oil barons for them all to make champions league ? Newcastle also rumored for Arab take over.

Is the concern that it's ownership from a certain part of the world, or ownership based on money that comes from oil, or just that the barrier to entry to top level football is becoming impossibly high because of the injection of sovereign wealth?

Which category do you qualify as ownership that has money partially due to not paying their workers (re: slaves) anything with numerous human rights abuses causes me to dislike them? Doesn't matter where they're from.

Oil money also worries me somewhat, due to it being based off a finite resource. What if all these huge companies go under or lose all that money? I'll be honest I don't know much of the oil money based sustainability, but I don't see it lasting much longer due to some governments (Europe mostly) leaning towards other fuels. I'd enjoy if someone could lead me to be more informed on it though.

Oh Davo15 Davo15 was saying "besides human Rights violations" but yeah.

Re: sustainability of oil money - could argue that that's one of the major reasons they're investing in football / media. Diversifying their sources of revenue and making their countries more attractive for investment and tourism will help prepare for life after the oil money tapers off.

It's the obscene wealth and is it sustainable ? Plus if we have a half dozen or more teams with this kind of cash do they lose interest when they can't all make the champions league? Doesn't matter to me if their Arab , Russian whatever didn't mean to imply a racial component of not wanting Arab money invested just that it's factually mega rich Arabs being linked with both leeds and newcastle presently.

IMO it's much, much more about sportswashing in the context of the Arabian Cold War. The annual revenues of Manchester City and the rest of CFG (and soon NUFC) don't probably stack up to much next to the UAE's oil exports.

They probably do better financially from tourism than from football.

Word. I wasn't suggesting that football revenue would make up for oil revenue (LOL if only!).

More that sportswashing -> appearing to be a better place to invest and / or visit -> a more diversified economy overall, outside of direct football revenue.

I find myself wondering all the time why it's easier to launder a reputation by trying to conquer world football vs. just actually fixing the issues for which you have a bad reputation.

Their probably not interested in fixing these problems as their part of how they maintain power internally but their still concerned about their international reputation.

Yeah, a religiously conservative absolute monarchy is unlikely to want to fix the main problem, namely that they're a religiously conservative absolute monarchy.

I think that is probably the root cause but not what most people raise issues about - things like migrant worker abuse, persecution based on sexual orientation or gender, persecution of dissent etc.

I could see at least some of these issues being resolved while still maintaining their religion and absolute monarchy. For instance I'm not sure that there is any religious decree that says you need to treat migrant workers poorly, perhaps even the opposite.

Looking forward to this even though the ending will hurt & it’ll show what Leeds are around the world

Another Leeds video if you watch the trailer above the guy that says he has kids, family & Leeds are above them both is this guy doing the fanzone commentary for this game in 2003 when we beat arsenal to avoid relegation

Welcome. I'm not a Leeds supporter but I of course support our boy Jack. I also think Promised Land a Northern Love Story by Anthony Clavane is one of the best sports related books I've ever read. If you've not read it I highly recommend especially to a Leeds supporter.

I’ll take a look at that mate.

If you’ve not seen the damned united or read the book I recommend that to you.

I’ll be posting plenty of Leeds stuff this coming season, I’m a season ticket holder. There’s plenty of Vloggers on YouTube that film the atmosphere & I like to spread the Leeds love haha
