Expansion Rumors Megathread

are they big enough group? or they just like 20 people online, i know they started a amateur team but not sure if its fans or just people from area that want to play.

I could be wrong but if I had to guess, there are less than 100 people who are very active in Flight 19. For example, Flight 19 tweets routinely get less than 10 likes. I know that’s not the end all be all but.......

Remember when the Borough Boys boycotted NYCFC when they finally got their wish for a team in the boroughs? If they even exist anymore, they are totally forgotten and irrelevant now. They actually had big numbers, most of the members just said F them and supported us anyway.

Leo Glickman is still fighting "the good fight" on Twitter

Not quite expansion news, but Chicago have apparently bought out their commitments to Bridgeview* and will move back to Soldier Field. While it was far-fetched, some speculated that the USL proposal could become an MLS club in Chicago. Perhaps the Fire are either angling to take over that Stadium, or looking to gain some relevance before they launch.

Saw on BigSoccer. Not sure how credible the original source is.

The USL stadium have been scraped, and Ricketts who was the Major Shareholder pulled out, but there still a goal for a team by 20121. http://www.sportspromedia.com/news/chicago-usl-stadium-cubs-owner-tom-ricketts

It’s a new soldier field now. Well, refurbished with more luxury boxes to sell. Maybe they are hoping they can pull an Atlanta with a rebrand.

Nah, Second City FC is an amateur club that is trying to compete in the US Open Cup. Unfortunately, they improvise all of their tactics from match to match.
Sounds familiar

The stadium itself is decent, nice views all around, simple, good for what it was. However, the big problem was the location of it. Very far outside the city with essentially no public transit access to it. Makes it difficult for a lot of people to attend matches, hence why most Chicago games look like there are only 1-2K attending them. Due to the difficulty of attending matches, not many people go. It's also in the middle of nowhere, so there aren't any bars or restaurants worth going to for a pregame or to hangout.

Getting out of Bridgeview... good.

Rebranding away from one of the really good, original MLS nicknames... horrible.
Exactly, going from a Classic Franchise name and brand to a template City name would be terrible.

Though I did hear from one Fire fan who had a twist on using City in the name that he would be ok with, City of Chicago FC.
