Expansion Rumors Megathread

St Louis Arches?

St. Louis already has a USL team, St Louis FC. I assumed this is the same club to play in MLS, no?

Saint Louis FC (USL) is a separate club but its owner is part of the MLS bid. It is unclear whether they will continue to run Saint Louis FC as an affiliate or directly owned reserve team, or just shutter it. They have already announced they will not use it's name and branding.

I think this was mentioned above, but the lead owner mentioned the "St. Louis Archers" as an early favorite among fans she talked to, but I speculate it's very early in the process and it's much less than a coin flip it wins out.

Some message boards were suggesting "Olympique St. Louis." I think there's IP issues with the IOC, but I think it's a neat name. We haven't seen names inspired by Ligue 1 yet.

2019: 24 teams
2020: Miami and Nashville - 26 teams
2021: Austin - 27 teams
2022: St. Louis and Sacramento - 29 teams

Current stated goal is to get to 30 teams.

2024: Queens Boro FC - 30 teams CONFIRMED.

EDIT: more than likely team #30 will be out of Vegas. That's my prediction!

Prediction. The league splits into 3 conferences starting next season when we have 26 teams.

At 27 teams, a round robin schedule of 2 games against teams in your conference and 1 against other teams yields 34 games.

That will cover us for next two years, although playoffs could get tricky.

top two from each conference (six teams) and then the best 2 of the 3 third place teams make it through. Eight teams overall? Can do 3 games single elimination or revert back to home/away, home/away, championship.

When they expanded the playoff field to 14 teams I remember they announced it would stay at 14 at least through expansion to 28.I certainly don't see them reducing the playoffs to roughly 30% of the league's teams.

If we do 3 divisions CCL gets screwed up too. 6 divisions makes more sense at 30. That’s 34 33 games playing your divisional/regional opponents twice.

Charlotte has to be number 30. Too much money. NFL owner and stadium. Success in the south (see Atlanta). They will build a very large complex for the team.

Also Tepper hired Tom Glick, former Man City COO and NYCFC’s first president, as the Panthers’ president last year. Surprisingly few expansion rumor sirens went off at the time (or they were pretty muted). Dude’s serious about this.

Yup. And they are going to build it right.

Pretty sure they've already signed some young promising South Americans?

they got three teenagers, meaning it will take them a while to get adjusted here like even the likes of barco took time.

EDIT: they need a mix, but i guess too early to tell, though you get the feeling it will be LAFC ish FO wanting to get the best they can

At 30 teams, three conferences is 10 teams per conference. That leads to a 38-game season if you play your own conference twice and the others once.
