Expansion Rumors Megathread

I don't understand the hate. It's a perfectly reasonable natural thing. Your're starting up a football club in [City Name]. You call it [City Name] Football Club. It represents the city and its fans in national competition. What will be the nickname? Better to let it develop from the supporters groups, etc., then some focus group ramming it down our throats, like in MLS 1.0.
But they don't do that.

They just put whatever thing they want their team to be nicknamed in the logo. See Minnesota United and loons, Orlando City and lions etc.

Its dumb. Just call yourself Minnesota Loons and Orlando Lions.

Because why tease it in the first place, then? Don't tease something that fans might try to get behind before the name is revealed.
St Louis is doing a "name suggestion" thing, so we'll see how that goes.

St Louis name/crest/colors on wednesday. Looking forward as I'm almost 100% sure they aren't pulling an FC/United.
I'd like the St Louis Archers

Do you have a source or is it a gut feeling?

If its latter I am pretty fucking sure they are going to pull United or City FC or SC. Or they are gonna be tiny (but not by much)more original and go with some other European style names.

Longevity? What?
Ersatz nostalgia is more like it.

You can’t honestly say that a team with United, FC, or SC will ever feel dated.

Real Salt Late = silly use of euro name
Inter Miami = silly use of euro team name
Sporting KC = silly but forgivable.

There were some definite swings and misses in MLS 1.0. Wizards, Metrostars, Burn just didn’t cut it and were jettisoned. Mutiny were kicked out of the league.

But there are even more that were terrific and have stood the test of time. Revolution, Fire, Galaxy, Earthquakes, Timbers, Sounders, Whitecaps, etc. Those names work. They are original and have relevance to their local cities. They are better than the generic European nicknames that have proliferated recently.

Better to take a chance on something great and have to try again than go with something bland and boring.

Yeah. That's why I think "Archers" works for St Louis. It sure sounds like the kind of name that can stick for a long time.
I'm now imagining an archer shooting an arrow, and the bow shaped like the famous arch..... would be cool and super memorable

what baffles me is who actually refers to St Louis and "St Louis CITY"? Is that common among locals? Adding the "City" seems like they're trying too hard. Are they really trying to distinguish themselves from St. Louis Suburbs? lol.

Archers would have been my vote.

Why not the Saints? I imagine that will be sung quite a lot in their supporters section.
