I kept waiting to see that damn Dino-bird attack the you-tube Star, the zoo keeper, and finally the camera person with the camera falling to the ground on its side capturing their last gasps as it raked their chests and pecked their throats open at the jugular.

Yeah, but that’s only because it didn’t realize it had a taste for human blood.... that thing has scales on its lizard legs, a sharpened wedge/horn on its head, and a giant beak. I bet Chris Pratt could teach a few of them to hunt in a pack.

    Yes.

And also I will generally, all things being equal, opt to use the small upstart competitor over the giant mega corporation. It's better for economy, society, etc.

    Here's their about page: https://duckduckgo.com/about

I've been using them for 5 or 6 years. I find the search results as good as any on Google or otherwise.

    And less evil.

I totally second everything said here. I've used DuckDuckGo for years and do all my searches from them. And I use their app on my iDevices as well.

Evil is a strong word. If you are interested, skim the first two responses for a tip of the iceberg view.

    https://www.quora.com/Is-Google-an-evil-company

For me, wherever it is remotely easy to do so, I choose other companies. Search is just as good (better) at DuckDuckGo. Online docs, I still haven't found a great alternative so I use Google.

Wild that Chris isn’t a Duck user already.

Totally with FootyLovinFootyLovin All of the closed ad ecosystems are about as evil as evil can get. Google is less obviously intrusive Facebook. And that is probably more dangerous.

Also, as someone who works in advertising, get the duck off of Facebook, kids. Like forever. My account done been deleted.

I will also say that having had first hand experience, Google is a lying piece of shit of a company even when it comes to their paying customers. Happy to explain more if you have questions. But if you know anything about advertising, I shouldn’t have to. But I should. Because they’ve been lying for years and we built an algo that proved it. Then they just ditched 2nd price. We were right. Like we knew we were. Fuck a google.

Here here. And I'm right back with you on the joys of deleting my Facebook account.

And yeah. I kind of would have expected that Christopher JeeChristopher Jee would have been out in front on DuckDuckGo. Just goes to show that even the best have blind spots.

TBH I haven't really been very animated by all the privacy controversy. Would love to hear y'all explain your positions on it if you can be bothered.

Would love to hear more about why closed ad ecosystems are "as evil as evil gets".

Also FootyLovinFootyLovin I'm all blind spots.

What’s your opinion on the DuckDuckGo privacy essentials extension? Use it?

Google and Facebook appear to be in a competition to see who can be most obnoxious as they collect and monetize as much of your private information as possible. Google wins in the areas of sheer amounts of data collected and collated. Facebook wins on the issue of violating every promise it has ever made on the topic, though arguably Google lags here mostly because it makes so few promises.

I use Duck Duck Go. To make it the default in Chrome I had to install an extension, but there might now be way to do that natively within Chrome. I'm not sure. I also expect Chrome logs everything anyway so I try to use Brave as much as possible.

As an aside, incognito mode does very little to hide your browsing, and especially does not hide it from Google itself. If you use incognito mode in Chrome and think Google does not know it is you and what you are doing and does not keep a record of it you are a damn fool.

Instead of AdBlocker I use the Privacy Badger extension from the EFF. It allows ads as long as they don't spy on you or try to track you all over the internet, and it attempts to block all such things as best as it can even if they are not part of an ad. I figure that's a fair compromise. It's annoying how many sites still flag me for using an adblocker.

Apple has its own issues, but on privacy and security it is far superior to Google and FB. This is the main reason I will never switch from iPhone to Android, unless Apple caves on this. I also don't trust Apple completely, and to a degree Apple far exceeds the other two just because the bar is so ridiculously low.

    Wait. Why Chrome?

I'm Firefox personally. Again, avoid evil Google whenever easy to do so.

    As I said,
I use google for internet maps (not on phone) and online docs. I don't know of easy and comparable solutions for those. I use my company email. But when there are really good and perfectly simple alternatives to Google products - e.g., DuckDuckGo, Firefox - I opt for not Google.

ETA: I also use YouTube (a Google company). Haven't found an easy better alternative for the content creators I like to watch.

On ad ecosystems: As a simple example, imagine you want to buy a new soccer ball. You go to Google and search. You think you are getting search results that reflect the best matches for buying a new soccer ball. Instead you might be getting more expensive or lousy quality options because those companies have deals with Google. It's not an honest search. I'm sure Midas MulliganMidas Mulligan can go into much more detail.

On privacy: They scrape every bit of data they can about you and they sell that data to anyone who wants to buy it. They aren't unique in this. Though in many ways they have been the strongest innovators in the field.

But my biggest issues with them surround their manipulation of search. Shopping searches (as outlined above) are dishonest. They've also been shown to hide search results about issues with their company. I don't know what you will find if today you Google "is google evil". But at various times in the past it's been different from what you would find when you DuckDuckGo "is google evil".

They basically bastardize the exact service they are supposed to be providing. For me, that's a deal breaker. Then throw in the privacy, tax evasion, anti-trust, etc. I just don't like them and prefer to give my eyeball economy value to a company like DuckDuckGo or a crowdsourced product like Firefox.
